Halo 5 Forge for Windows 10

The promised Windows 10 edition of Halo 5 Forge is now available. You can pick this up for free on the Microsoft Store in a bundle with a Halo app (not the first Halo as we originally thought). This offers the chance to forge new missions for the shooter sequel. Xbox LIVE's Major Nelson has the news, including to what degree this is a playable game:
In addition to the core suite of builder tools being made available through Halo 5: Forge, we’ll also be allowing players to play custom Arena multiplayer games on Windows 10 and making available all of the existing Halo 5 Arena maps. Players will be able to set up custom matches with friends over Xbox Live to play and test their creations on the PC before sharing them with the world.

Best of all, Halo 5: Forge is a free offering. Anyone with a Windows 10 PC that meets the minimum requirements meets the minimum requirements (which includes having Windows 10 Anniversary Update, get it here) for the game can download the client and join the community, building and playing within the Halo 5 ecosystem.

As 343’s first Halo FPS release on PC, we are approaching this as a learning opportunity. In developing Halo 5: Forge for Windows 10, we have been fortunate to work with a great partner in Skybox Labs, based out of Vancouver, Canada. Skybox has worked closely with Tom French, Nahil Sharkasi, and the entire team here at 343 Industries to ensure we provide the sort of experience that PC players have come to expect. They have done a terrific job and we look forward to continuing to work with them in future.

Whether or not the store is a bad thing isn't really a concern when it comes to this particular piece of software; it's free. If you lose access to it in the future...uh, too bad? Paid purchases are the only thing you have any actual right to be cranky about, and CJ is technically correct, although filled with ulcer-inducing rage.

I plan on picking up Forza Horizon 3, but it also runs on the Xbone on the same purchase, so I'm not terribly worried about loss of access. I don't TEND to go back to older games, so loss of older titles isn't enough to bother me. There are plenty of newer games that work fine, and I have more interest in anyway. Not trying to invalidate CJ's anger over his sorta-loss of AOE3 access, just that *personally* it's not a concern.

I do think that games past a certain age should be made available for free, but that usually requires someone to code OUT their DRM, and no one's gonna do that for free. Or worse, they need some help to run on recent OS', which can be a monumental task, depending on how many now-dead tricks they used to get it working. For example, I'd love for Rocket Jockey to actually work, even if it's still butt ugly. It's hilarious fun in multiplayer and has mechanics no one has done since. But that'd require work, unpaid and probably largely unnoticed. It's more likely someone would make a spiritual successor than to resurrect the original.

I did not weigh in on my opinion of Microsoft or the App Store for Windows. Whether or not his points are valid, his approach is toxic and the overwhelming majority of his post history follows that same trend.

You can have a debate without being an abrasive, toxic, nerd raging asshole. They're not mutually exclusive.

I am calling this out not because I care about Microsoft, but because Bluesnews is a fantastic site with a few rotten apples that drag the comment threads down. Hold yourselves to higher standard.

Unfortunately you picked the thread, topic, and comment where his style is appropriate. Calling him out on threads where it isn't will engender greater success.

You missed the entire point -- being a toxic abrasive asshole is never "appropriate" in a forum like this. The validity of his points are a separate issue from how he conducts himself. He could've made all those points with the same impact without being a toxic asshole.

edit - how about this:

I don't give a fuck what he thinks about Microsoft, the dude is a motherfucking retard who has choked down the free market red pill and filled himself with so much self righteous anger that he can't hold a civil fucking conversation. Everything he argues is irrelevant because he doesn't understand how to take a respectful tone with anyone who may have a different point of view. You know who else acts like this? Fucking terrorists.

CJ Parker is literally a terrorist.

Do you see the difference now? One is appropriate, one is not. I can't agree with you that there is ever a time being a toxic asshole on the internet over a trivial matter is constructive. It's just not man, and the point doesn't justify the delivery.

Do you not see what you do to the comments sections? Your posts turn it from talking about the article, to annoying people enough that we have to comment about your shit.

Make your points that you need to make (they're fine and valid) without being racist or slandering people, because clearly you don't like it either.

While GFWL store closed down, that is you can't purchase new games from them, the service is still out there, supporting GFWL games. I have it installed on Windows 10, and it works perfectly fine, still serving out downloads for the game I added to the GFWL account, and keeping track of achievements and other things.

That is complete bullshit. I own(ed) Age of Empires III Complete on GFWL. Can I still install the GFWL client? Yes. Can I download AoE III Complete? Yes. Can I play AoE III Complete? Fuck no.
The game asks for a fucking key when I try to start it. I never got a fucking key because the game is/was tied to my GFWL account.
So what I had to do to be able to play my legally purchased game was google a AoE III key and that luckily worked but without Google I'd be fucked out of a game by Microshit's utter incompetence.

You know, I can even still see the original transaction in my MS account so MS has a record of my purchase. So why did I never get a key when they shut down their retard service?
The very least they should have done would've been to either... A. give everyone a free Steam key for AoE III Complete or... B. add the game to people's MS accounts and provide a key or account-bound version from there or... C. select any other method of their choosing to allow GFWL game owners access to their legally acquired games.

Microshit did none of that. They effectively stole my game from me. They are the only digital platform so far who have lost a game and they (unfortunately) do not even have the excuse of going out of business or anything. They just didn't give a fuck when they shut down GFWL.

That is why I am NEVER going to purchase a game from a Microshit storefront again. NEVER. They have broken rule no. 1 which is trust. Who is to say that their CEO or Phil Spencer doesn't consider the Win 10 store a "failure" next month and they shut it down in similar fashion to GFWL, not giving a fuck and screwing people out of their legal purchases? I had to update windows for this, I guess I must have turned updates off after the auto-download messed up my connection during a game of ARMA. Probably the only thing about the new OS that has annoyed me so far (Oh, and some admin functions got bumped up to the pro version, that sucks as well).

Yeah it's a Trojan horse of malware and state sponsored surveillance, but I traded my privacy to silicon valley a long time ago. I'm pretty sure google/apple have known exactly how long and often I spend taking a shit for a few years now.

I love me some Halo, skipped 5 because I skipped that console (For the time being) so this will be nice. Seems to have all the non co-op/warzone MP content but no matchmaking which makes it kind of useless.

Cool that people have a way to make and test their levels on another platform though. Forge maps and customs nights were always a highlight in H3 and Reach. Hopefully they learn their lessons from this on how to make a proper PC game, knowledge they somehow lost in the last few decades.
