Pretty sure they are. Windows 7 is supposed to be supported until 2020, and manufacturers made Windows XP chipset drivers right up to EOL for that OS... even beyond.

Well, thanks for sealing my decision to build now, as opposed to waiting 6 months for AMD Zens to come out, CPU Manufacturers!

I'm not really interested in supporting Win10's spyware, I'll have to shuffle along with Windows 8.1 on a Core i7 6700K, and non-updated Spybot Anti-Beacon.

Why not go the extra mile for a 6 core 6800k instead? $?

BTW, 6800k is broadwell, which means that the next 7800k won't be KabyLake, but probably Skylake, they are always 1 generation behind, you could wait for the 7800k and still be covered for Win7-8.

A lot of corporate workstations are still running Windows 7 and won't likely be looking to upgrade to 10 any time soon. I wonder if this will force the market to update or will we simply see motherboard manufacturers who buck this trend and create drivers for these chipsets anyways.

Can you say its earlier than usual? Windows 7 is 7+ years old. I think that's a pretty good run in terms of drivers. Besides you can bet they will release drivers if they have enterprise customers who rely on it.

Gentlemen:

It's not about CPU compatibility. It's about Chipset drivers. If Intel and AMD no longer make drivers that work with Windows 7-8.1 then you are forced to use Windows 10.

If you read the article, It's already a PITA to isntall Windows 7 on Skylake via USB (External USB DVD or thumb drive). You have to inject the drivers in a custom image via DISM, first, to get it to work (And yes, I have encountered this with our latest workstations at work)

All it takes is the CPU manufactures to quit making chipset drivers that will work with older OS's, and that's all she wrote.

I'm pretty sure there are no 3rd party chipsets anymore like VIA or OPTI for Intel or AMD, anymore.

The bottom line is that we are at the mercy of the CPU manufacturers for chipset drivers. Whether Kabylake works on current chipsets or not... remains to be seen... but once there are no drivers for future chipsets... that's it.

I don't know why everyone thinks the CPUs won't work with Win 7. They will work fine in Win 7 you just won't get to use any of the newer features built into them like the 4K stuff, new instructions/GPU, or even some of the power management stuff. It will though still run though and it will probably read (generic x86 or AMD64 Compatible CPU) in device manager or something like that.

Though what will break most likely is if there is a bug in the chip that needs a microcode change. That will be 100% broken and you won't get it in Win 7 so you'd have to live with the bug or move to a new OS.

They are forcing the obsolescence of Win 7 cause they can't lock it down like they can with Win 10. With all the 4K crap they put in there they built in hardware DRM so movie studios like Sony are willing to bring content to the PC. If someone works around the DRM they can't lock it down in Win 7 cause it can't force patches to the OS, but Win 10 can be forced to patch itself.

It will fly like an eagle because Microsoft can’t be expected to support previous-gen processors in perpetuity, or so they will argue.

How would that work exactly?

We don't know what they are changing. It might just be GPU driver support only for Win10. Will they make the instructions incompatible? That would be a huge shift and betrayal of the market.

Looks like Skylake will be my last processor for a Windows Gaming rig.

Gonna eventually switch my 27" iMac to Linux Mint, anyway, since I can't stand Yosemite nor El Capitan. (When Mavericks goes EOL)
