Mess Affect: Mass Effect Remasters Hopes Dashed

An IGN Unfiltered interview with Peter Moore talks with EA's Chief Competition Officer about his history in the business and what's up at EA. GameSpot notes that at one point he throws cold water on recent indications that they may be working on remastered versions of the Mass Effect series. Here's a bit:
"Is there demand? Yes, there's thousands of people who want it. Do we need millions? I don't know," he said, adding that there would be costs beyond the financial ones to releasing Mass Effect remasters. "Our blinders are on and [we are] looking toward future."

Moore went on to say that a lot of people want EA to make Skate 4 and a new Fight Night game.

"We're a 34-year-old company that has thousands of pieces of IP around the world. Road Rash!" he said. "If you allow yourself to take the easy road--not to diss remastering great franchises, but there are so many opportunities for us to have people go to something else."

Coming from a moronic company that gave the world rehashed sports titles every year.

Well they aren't moronic because of that.

Welp, in the plus column, at least I won't have to buy all the Mass Effect games again for like the fourth or fifth time because of my hopeless addiction to the series

I can understand remastering a 20-year-old game that is no longer available or that is difficult to get running on current hardware, but why do we need remasters of last-gen games that can be bought for $5?

Have to agree with him. ME does not need a remake, game plays fine as it is.

Let's get some NEW games with NEW content instead of polishing the antiques.

Yeah, if it's a matter of resources, one of EA's redeeming qualities is that it actually introduces new IPs regularly (although it can be accused of the yearly sports franchise rehashes). Compared to it's peers Valve and Blizzard, EA has taken the "sandblaster" approach towards getting new content, vs the slow, methodical, calculated entries to series like the other 2 companies do. Ubisoft is a bit of each, they fund indy games like Grow Up etc, but seem to like their staple franchises like ass cred etc.

I played the Mass Effect series and I don't know why anyone would want them remastered anyway. I didn't think they were all that great in the first place as far as gameplay was concerned, and there are plenty of much earlier classic games that deserve a remaster (or remake) far more than Mass Effect.

What's wrong with polishing the antiques? I do it a couple times a week at least.

I want a way to play the antiques though without saving my original XBox and my 360.

Slightly off topic, the Road Rash remake, Road Redemption, is awesome.

I got in at the Early Access level on Steam, and even months ago, the last time I checked their build, it's fun to play and relatively bug free. The combat is great, the sense of speed is good, although they did stray from classic Road Rash with some rooftop maps, but those are honestly pretty interesting.

Definitely worth the $10 (or $15) bucks I spent on the last sale, probably worth the 20 they are asking, although to be fair I have been waiting for the retail release and have stopped playing the Early Access version.

Remastered Mass Effect: not interested, personally. Mass Effect is pretty overrated in my opinion. Combat was passable, story was reasonably good, companions were reasonably good to mediocre, planet scanning was atrocious. I would never play that game again without hacking planet resources to avoid scanning. Or was that ME2? At least one of them had terrible resource generation mechanics!

I was looking at that the other day. Is anyone in the early access? Is it fun? It looks too fast for combat to be fun.

But I don't think he's pointing out Road Rash to say "we should be working on a Road Rash" so much to say "we have a ton of IP at least a few people wish we were still working on, like Road Rash! Sadly, we can't spend all our resources remaking old games, and a lot of people don't really want us to as much as they say otherwise."

I would totally get with a new Road Rash game. Still one of my fondest 3DO memories.

If they won't remaster the Mass Effect series, hopefully Microsoft will at least release the remaining 2 games via XBox One backwards compat.
