Out of the Blue

Finished my rewatch of Firefly last night. I have to say the show was even better than I recalled. This makes no sense, considering how I already loved it, but there you go. Now I get to conclude the experience by watching Serenity again. I'm looking forward to the rest of Whedon's fantastic story, though that movie can be a little rough on the emotions.

Well my self-imposed deadline for Hello Games to fix No Man's Sky passed today at Noon so I got Steam to refund me all the way to my PayPal account. Hello Games managed to get me to do two things I had never done before 1. Pre-order a game at full price. 2. Request a refund on a game. Quite an accomplishment Sean...

I mean, is it too much to ask that a game actually starts within 72 hours of release? I don't think so, and yes my hardware exceeds the minimum specs, and I had updated all drivers.
Hey, I give you credit for waiting that long. I was so annoyed I couldn't get the game launched, I asked for the refund on the 13th. As I said before, I'll probably try it again after some fix releases and price reductions.

Is it fair to say both Deadwood and Firefly were expensive to make and had a cult following, as in they were loved by relatively few rather than liked by many?

A disinterested viewer is worth as much as an engrossed one - in the short term - so it's easy to imagine these being on the chopping block in favour of cheaper, disposable stuff.

I tried watching Firefly a while back. The first episode started with some guy screwing around with a toy dinosaur. The scene annoyed the hell out of me and I stopped watching.

Another series I never understood why it abruptly ended was Deadwood. I suspect it was due to the show's popularity hitting full stride too late.

They've been talking for years (too many) about another season and/or a movie to neatly wrap up the series, but that is all it has been (talk).

Here is a recent interview with Ian McShane, which is only a glimmer of hope.

It'd be awesome if Netflix picked it up!

I loved deadwood but I did read an article long ago about how the show costed way to much to film versus its popularity and that ultimately contributed to its demise.

Amusement park safety under scrutiny after accidents.

Those poor kids.

In 2011, theme parks, amusement parks and water parks generated a total direct economic impact of approximately $55.4 billion.

Safety? There's money to be made!

The state agencies responsible for inspections vary. In Pennsylvania, it is the Department of Agriculture; in Kansas, Tennessee and Nebraska, it is the Department of Labor.
In other states, the agencies include departments of industrial relations, insurance, consumer protection, public health and human services, safety and consumer affairs. The office of the state fire marshal is responsible in Delaware; the building safety division is responsible in Idaho, according to the CPSC.

Obviously the solution is to require each state to have a Department of Amusement Parks.

With 43 bites, 9-year-old wins ‘tastiest girl’ competition at annual Russian Mosquito Festival.

With zika, dengue, malaria, and a host of other mosquito borne illnesses out there, this just seems like a bad idea.

So I never watched Firefly but everyone talks about how its probably one of the best sci-fi shows ever but was cancelled after 1 season?

SO whats the story behind this? another "Star Trek (1967)"? Not that popular at showing but gained popularity and cult following after cancellation?

Fox aired the episodes out of order and I think they even wound up moving its timeslot around which resulted in poor ratings. Obviously Fox could never be at fault for poor scheduling, so it must be the show that needs to be cancelled. This is the sort of show that needs to be watched in order (DVD order) to really appreciate it.

If you enjoy sci-fi, hell even if you don't, watch it. I had recommended this show to some of my friends who abhor sci-fi and it wound up being one of their favorite shows as well.

Even without the tampering, this is definitely a show that needed to be given a couple of years to find its audience. It was never given that chance. Think about how BSG did it: They had the miniseries which kicked everything off, then let word of mouth build for a year before they started with the weekly episodes. If Firefly had had two seasons, it could have built up awareness during the break and had a much strong second season ratings-wise.

I was not aware how poorly amusement parks are inspected in the USA. It's up to local states to impose regulations but I'm amazed it's not structured and closely regulated nationwide. I guess they figured lawsuits would be the major deterrent?

There was just something about the old west theme or the cheesy special effects that lost my interest.

I watched all episodes, but felt the same. They too obviously tried to force western element into science fiction and had forgotten that Han Solo in SW had already shown how this is done properly, and not with a stupid bullet revolver and cows shitting in the cargo holt ;)!

I liked Serenity, though, and I might give Firefly another chance someday.

Serenity was another big let down for me. Not only because they killed off someone without reason and quite illogically, but because if you really think about it, the main arc would have been the typical government-makes-zombie-virus-plot, only in space...

I tried to watch Firefly and i could not take it and stopped at episode 3. I thought it was very bad.

I also thought it was very cheesy and stopped watching it after a couple episodes (and I generally like sci-fi). This was both during the original airing and also on Netflix a few years ago. There was just something about the old west theme or the cheesy special effects that lost my interest. I'm sorry to say that it could have been done better and might have succeeded if it had been. I liked Serenity, though, and I might give Firefly another chance someday.

Blasphemy!

By chance were you watching in the order in which they were aired by Fox? I recall following it on Fox and was put off by it. Like boneheads, they put the Train Heist first and I think they reordered one of the later episodes as well. If you watch it in the DVD order as it was intended, it makes for a much better experience.

It's easily one of my favorite shows.
