No Man's Sky Launch & Workarounds

Sean Murray tweets a reminder that the PC edition of No Man's Sky will launch today. This tweet says this will be a 2.6 GB download, but that preloads are not available. Finally, he offers a schedule of when the game will unlock in various regions. Correcting his use of Standard Time, the game's global launch should come at 1:00 pm EDT. To pave the way, a post on the No Man's Sky website discusses issues players are encountering in the space exploration game. These apply to the already released PS4 edition, but many of the workarounds they offer will apply to today's PC release as well. Here's word on how they are ramping up support along with some temporary fixes:
Here are some things to be aware of:

  • We’ve brought a new QA team on board today (larger than the entire Hello Games team!). This will complement the existing Sony QA team.
  • We are working on fixes for the most critical issues, which will be in a patch in the near future.
  • We will be moving to a ticketed support system next week, and have hired someone to manage this starting Monday.
  • Some information will be posted in the Sony forums here http://community.us.playstation.com/t5/Games-Services/bd-p/22190
  • Or contact Hello Games here http://www.no-mans-sky.com/support/

Workarounds

Here are some workarounds for some known issues:

  • If you believe you are stuck, or can’t reach your ship, be aware you can jetpack forever whilst pushing against any surface
  • If you have made a mistake – you can revert to any of your two previous saves in the Options Menu
  • If you have left your ship somewhere inaccessible, you will be able to summon it from landing pads or beacons found at most buildings or points of interest (marked by question marks)

Oooohohohoho. I don't know when that was.
That would have been before the internet removed the costs involved in releasing patches. Prior to that, a company had to ship disks to their customers, so they made a -serious- effort to ensure the game was playable out of the box.
Those days were horrible for both the consumer and the developer. This is the golden age of computer gaming.
I don't necessarily disagree that things gaming are generally better now. But in that one area (QA), it was definitely better then.

For shorter, often less ambitious games with fewer online functions and target platforms and costing twice as much to the consumer. Although maybe that dosnt explain all of it. It might be that there is so much competition and dev/QA costs are so high that when games go over budget/release date they just have to release or go under.

A lot of older games have pretty shitty bugs that never got fixed even with patches. Dungeon keeper and OG XCOM to name a few. And bloody Origin made a habit of releasing games that never seemed to run well on mortal human computers until a few years after release (Except WC3, that was great).

I've done a bit of the old QA. Even with a decent budget and time it's a rough show with devs missing milestones and impossible to repro nightmare bugs that they seem incable of addressing. Could be some decent money in it for anyone who thinks they could run a QA shop right.

For AAA I don't think anyone releases a game that is solid on day 1 without a patch for everyone on release. Prison Architect and Factorio seem to have nailed the process in EA (read crowdsourcing free QA for sandbox genres that seem to thrive on it) but my other favourite example of Kerbal seems to have screwed the pooch with recent releases, maybe due to trying to put their fingers in the console pie but who knows.

Man, you'd think developers would learn already the releasing a non-optimized console port and/or lying to your customers are bad business practices guaranteed to generate a ton of ill will and trigger requests for refunds. I'm glad I wasn't a sucker and didn't pre-order this game.

I have to admit I enjoy more games that I use my 360 controller for on my PC. So I get the big super reclining office chair, recline and put my feet up. Sadly this is how I'd destroyed 2 controllers playing (I finally got to Skelligrade Isles after loosing 3 saves) Witcher 3.

I don't understand how playing in the office chair using the controller for PC games has destroyed 2 controllers...

I have a few games that are my 'sit back and relax games'. Witcher 3, Rocket League and any of the Lego games which I play with a controller. 1st controller was a Gamestop brand 360 controller and the 2nd was a Afterglow 360 controller. I've worn them down even after replacement pads for the buttons.

I'd assume Sony's QA support was mostly the PS4 and maybe a few people for the PC. Still, small team or not and money not obviously an issue, they should have had their own QA team for months now. That's just shocking.

Feels exactly like I predicted. Completely sterile and after a few planets you feel extremely stupid, since what you do is the same all the time. I dont even see the point in playing.
Reminds me very much of the driving around on planets in Mass Effect 1. They were pretty much all the same too and extremely boring after a while.
I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

It's a MUCH better game than I thought it would be. Like, I actually feel like I'm playing a game and not just a tech demo screensaver. It's a bit shallow, but it's pretty, and quite engrossing.

I'm trying to see how long I can play and how far in the tech tree I can get without leaving the first system. I spent about an hour on the first planet.

I've had a lot more fun than I did in the first few hours of Elite Dangerous. If I have one complaint, I wish it were more of a survival game. It feels like it really wanted to be, but at the end nerfed a few things to not piss off the casual ps4 userbase.

I guess I'm fortunate in that other than alt-tab not working correctly, the game runs great on max settings. I have a 980ti. I wonder if there are driver issues on the newer nvidia cards?

No, it's not worth 60, if money is tight. Worth 30-40 easily though.

One source of the stuttering and odd performance:
The default FPS limiter is set to 30. :/

I set it to 60 and things are much smoother, as expected. The hitching seems to have gradually gone away. But yes, when first launched its a bit of a lurchy beast. I suspect some of the NV shader caching doing first compiles might be related.

Arguably, the game would never have been released without all that money. Perhaps in time this will shape up for PC, and become a fun game.

In interviews they've said No Mans Sky was funded 100% by themselves (original dev team) and that Sony picked up all the marketing/distribution for it.
