Out of the Blue

I think I've finally solved my coffee storage problem. I keep the joe flowing in the BlueTower by buying 40oz bags of Starbucks beans at BJs. Some knock Fivebucks' quality, but I've settled on them for the cheapest good coffee going. These French Roast beans look as good as they taste, with a shiny gleam I can't help describing as "sexy." The trouble is it takes a couple of weeks to go through a bag, and they start to border on stale by the end. This was in an Oxo container, as it's not quite airtight. I bought a container advertised for the purpose, but this "extra large" canister is would only hold about a quarter of the bag. What I've found is that by putting the beans in a gallon Ziplock bag, I can use a straw to suck out most of the air. This creates about as good a vacuum seal as possible, and then I store the bag in the Oxo. This has improved the lifespan of my beans, and I'm pleased with the outcome. This means my next coffee disaster story will involve the Heimlich Maneuver to stop choking on a coffee bean, but hey... fresh coffee!

Peets pretty good. Used to drink when I flew to LA for business. Can't get them out here tho.

Ever tried ordering off the net?

Yeah, I get 2 pounds of beans at a time from Costco, usually what ever strikes my fancy. Right now I have Colombian Supremo 100% Arabica Whole Bean by Seattle Mountain Coffee. I leave it in the fridge in the original bag. I just pour out the beans to grind and roll the bag up again, squeezing out as much air as I can before closing it with a big binder clip. They keep their sheen and taste fine for at least a month, by which time I've used them up.

I don't know about BJs and the SB beans, but Costco roasts and bags their coffee right in the store.

This new Rogue trailer is much better than the angsty first one. That being said, I've heard they had to do a lot of reshoots which doesn't bode well for the project.

Oh lord. Never freeze roasted coffee.

Starbucks is terrible. They have trained a generation to like crap. You dark roast the garbage, and knowing this they have trained their customers to accept awful coffee. I go off on the management every time I have to go there for some reason.

A nice medium or light roasted coffee is packed with flavor. A dark roasted coffee is burnt, and tastes like it.

My exp with 5bux is that their coffee always tastes burnt and is highly acidic. Caribou and Dunn brothers is far superior.

Huge fan of Seattles Best. Burger king here in mn uses it. I dont eat their food, but damn they can brew coffee!

My home brew is Hills Brothers. Best commercial grind I can find.

Hey Blue,
For vacuum style sealing of your beans, I just saw this video the other day. How to Seal Foods Air-Free Without a Vacuum Sealer

Hope it helps.

That's a huge pain in the ass not to mention a massive waste of fresh water - something much of the world is in short supply of. Hell if you don't want to use a vacuum sealer you could technically use an iron.

While I agree that it may be a pain in the ass, it's relatively free and you can always use the water for plants afterwards. With an iron all you get is a seal and no air removal.
If you really want to save water you can also just the back of your toilet. Just sayin. Allthumbsup

Like all the previous posters have stated you can freeze your beans with little or no degradation in quality.

I read in a professional coffee book where the author left some beans in his mothers freezer for 6 years. When thawed they still made an acceptable cup.

Double bag your beans with both foil and freezer plastic/bags, suck/squeeze out as much air as possible. The reason you use foil is because freezer plastic is still permeable to some degree, combining both gives you the best of both worlds.

I don't believe a fridge cuts it. The article referenced was on here sometime back and it was freezing that made for a better, more uniform grind but I don't recall it alluded to keeping beans any fresher. And as the science goes it shouldn't make a difference if it's refrigerated or not if it's in an airtight container. In fact if you could replace the oxygen with neutral gas like nitrogen - as they do for bottled goods - that would really keep it fresh, Hrm, there's a crowdfunding idea if I ever heard one. A nitrogen based coffee container. Remember, I came up with it so it's mine!

Huh, that's what my ma drinks, the French roast. She likes those dark, heavy coffees as well - Sumatran, et al. I'm definitely on the milder side. I like Starbucks Pike Place and am pissed Costco here stopped selling it as it was a great price. And why piss around with a straw and a bag? Either get a vacuum sealer - good for all kinds of stuff - or get a proper storage container....
