No Man's Sky is Very Very Chill

A post on the No Man’s Sky website paves the way for this week's launch of the new space game. It's due tomorrow on PS4 and on Friday for Windows, so Sean Murray tackles the topic of what you do in the game. He also provides links to old and new screenshots and gameplay videos from various sources. He also mentions a livestream of the game that's already concluded, but can still be viewed here. Here are some warnings about what the game is and isn't:

That means this maybe isn’t the game you *imagined* from those trailers. If you hoped for things like pvp multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilisations… that isn’t what NMS is. Over time it might become some of those things through updates.

For instance, freighters and building bases *are* coming! Read about updates coming here.

At launch though, it’s an infinite procedural sci-fi-space-survival-sandbox unlike anything you have ever played before. If you decide to play it, you’ll see just how closely it plays to those trailers, and to our original vision. It’s a weird game, it’s a niche game and it’s a very very chill game.

It'll have as much game to it as Minecraft does. If that appeals to you, then this may be the game for you.

Pretty much what I'm seeing. As someone who loves open worlds and exploring, I'm in!

This has no building/construction of any kind though, does it? That's like 99% of Minecraft's appeal. I don't see many videos of random Minecraft seeds, but thousands of "We built the Death Star in Minecraft!"

Actually there was a time when people were out exploring random seeds and posting videos and screenshots etc from it. If there is an appeal to NMS, I expect it will be mostly from that kind of crowd.

While the hype is redonkulous, this does have some appeal to me. Along with the storyline and researching alien languages, almost like a more fleshed out version of the mass effect 3 planet searching. Not something I would put a lot of time in, but I could see myself roaming around for an hour or two every once in a while.

Just like I did with Minecraft, as the tech tree and collecting resources was what was fun for me there. I never knew what to build was the problem.
