That means this maybe isn’t the game you *imagined* from those trailers. If you hoped for things like pvp multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilisations… that isn’t what NMS is. Over time it might become some of those things through updates.
For instance, freighters and building bases *are* coming! Read about updates coming here.
At launch though, it’s an infinite procedural sci-fi-space-survival-sandbox unlike anything you have ever played before. If you decide to play it, you’ll see just how closely it plays to those trailers, and to our original vision. It’s a weird game, it’s a niche game and it’s a very very chill game.

If there is any game that screams 'wait till its patched and finished' before buying, it is this one.
What it screams even more is "wait till it has a or more major expansions". No base building, no home planet, no co-op or any real multiplayer to speak of in its current state... makes this game a 20 dollar product at most.

is a similarly bad problem as games like The Witcher 3 repeating a few different faces amongst many NPCs?

It'll have as much game to it as Minecraft does. If that appeals to you, then this may be the game for you.
Pretty much what I'm seeing. As someone who loves open worlds and exploring, I'm in!
This has no building/construction of any kind though, does it? That's like 99% of Minecraft's appeal. I don't see many videos of random Minecraft seeds, but thousands of "We built the Death Star in Minecraft!"![]()

It's a one in a million shot, but you might find someones planet Dickbutt some day.![]()
I'm going to say that that's probably a 1:1 chance.![]()

this dialogue on the game should have happened months ago. It probably wouldve tempered peoples expectations a bit.

One would think such learned font of gaming knowledge as Ars should know better. I suppose, for example, that in The Witcher the reason every thug in Flotsam looks like a clone of another is "artistic vision"...or something. Never mind every other game that "recycles content", which indeed is just about every single game out there.
Sandbox game- Wikipedia.
A game wherein the player has been freed from the traditional structure and direction typically found in video games, and is instead given the ability to choose what, when, and how they want to approach the available choices in content. The term is in reference to a child's sandbox in which no rules are present and play is derived from open-ended choice. While some sandbox games may have building and creation aspects to their gameplay, those activities are not required. Sandbox games usually take place in an open-world setting as to facilitate the freedom of choice a player is given.
Tachikoma wrote on Aug 9, 2016, 13:29:I'd disagree, I'd say GTA was simply open world, not sandbox. Also as I said before, it is a matter of semantics/definition. But I think unless there is more crafting/building in this game than I have seen in the videos I've watched -- it is not "like Minecraft" or what I would call a sandbox game.Mr. Tact wrote on Aug 9, 2016, 12:40:
Sandbox implies a building aspect.
Last I checked GTA was a flagship sandbox game. You ever built anything in there?

Also... ick. From said article: And, in very bad news, NMS has already proven itself a major content recycler. Every planet I go to has the same "settlement" and "mural" structures, right down to the north-south-east-west positioning of iron-built buildings in a mountain's pit. The dynamic content generators have their limits, and it didn't take me long to find them.
I watched a few hours of streams and saw the same handful of buildings over and over and over again. They are everywhere. It's like searching for a Starbucks in Seattle. You'll find one on every corner and they all look the same.

I don't really want to jump on the hater bandwagon as I think this looks like a really interesting game, however the lack of PVP just screams "you have to play the game on our servers because you are all dirty pirates who will play for free if we let you have the full game". This is not really the sort of game I think should be on GOG.
Except you don't have to connect to the servers at all to play. Hello games said the GOG version will be DRM free and playable offline. All you will miss out on by not connecting to their servers is sharing discoveries with other people.

Where is the "sandbox" portion of this game?
You mean, being free to do what you want to do in a universe-sized environment isn`t sandboxy enough?
Lol. It doesn`t matter anyway, the devs can break it down for the hundreth time, yet some folks will still see what they want to see.
