No Man's Sky is Very Very Chill

A post on the No Man’s Sky website paves the way for this week's launch of the new space game. It's due tomorrow on PS4 and on Friday for Windows, so Sean Murray tackles the topic of what you do in the game. He also provides links to old and new screenshots and gameplay videos from various sources. He also mentions a livestream of the game that's already concluded, but can still be viewed here. Here are some warnings about what the game is and isn't:

That means this maybe isn’t the game you *imagined* from those trailers. If you hoped for things like pvp multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilisations… that isn’t what NMS is. Over time it might become some of those things through updates.

For instance, freighters and building bases *are* coming! Read about updates coming here.

At launch though, it’s an infinite procedural sci-fi-space-survival-sandbox unlike anything you have ever played before. If you decide to play it, you’ll see just how closely it plays to those trailers, and to our original vision. It’s a weird game, it’s a niche game and it’s a very very chill game.

You say that like it's a bad thing...

It's basically a resource-mining grind em up, upgrade and repeat on the next of 5,000,000,000 planets. I've watched a few video streams and while it looks cool in places, it seems it would get pretty repetitive after a short while. I haven't seen anything surprising or awesome in the videos I've watched, just slight variations and colours of flora and fauna. A bit like Spore then..!

Kind of like Minecraft then! Which sold 100M copies.

I'm not saying this will sell 100M copies, just don't underestimate a game with repetitive gameplay.

Polygon has a first comment after 10 hours, post patch.
They call it more of a survival game than an exploration game and that this is kinda annoying early on.

It'll have as much game to it as Minecraft does. If that appeals to you, then this may be the game for you.

I totally agree with this. Minecraft never sold for more than $30 right? And it still made tons of profit. NMS doesn't seem to have the multiplayer or modding, I just don't understand the the pricetag. It is spaceage modern indie Minecraft without multiplayer & modding. $60?

You sir win the internet for today.

I don't really want to jump on the hater bandwagon as I think this looks like a really interesting game, however the lack of PVP just screams "you have to play the game on our servers because you are all dirty pirates who will play for free if we let you have the full game". This is not really the sort of game I think should be on GOG.

So I watched that 1 hour video and couple things:

That guys really jerking himself off on the procedural generation thing.

But it does look pretty, i like some of the design aspects.. It just seems like it needs 2 years of content updates for it to appeal to me. Which won't happen unless people buy it so it's kind of a catch 22.

Sandbox is a synonym for open world.

Witcher 3 is an open world game. It ain't a sandbox. Sandbox implies creativity as a major factor in play.

Yes, I agree this is an "open world" -- "sandbox" in my mind indicates the ability to build... semantics I guess. Whatever, I won't belabor it.

Most of us saw this coming a long way off so no real surprise. Saw a good comment on it the other day from someone who snagged an early copy saying it's exactly like Subnautica. It's a chillax simulator. Well worth it at $20 or less but certainly not full price. Ultimately I see a lot of buyers remorse and returns for this game in short order. I imagine it'll drop in price pretty fast too.

put Yes's Starship Trooper on repeat. In fact the art has a very 70's prog rock vibe.

yup confirmed NMS is actually a procedural 70's prog band album art generator.

Exactly. I'm willing to do just that but not for $60.00. Only a few games warrant that pricetag and the last time I checked they were games like GTA V & Witcher 3, all of which were well worth the money. I mean, "chill" in this case is kinda boring, it's a lot of inventory screens and resource gathering which I suppose is sort of like *toke, toke, look at the silly creatures, yawn*.

It was certainly a disappointment but I think Spore had a lot more mechanics than you guys are giving it credit for. At least more than NMS appears to have. Like there was that whole RTS aspect to it, terraforming, trade, different game types/genres at the different levels of evolution, etc.
