No Man's Sky is Very Very Chill

A post on the No Man’s Sky website paves the way for this week's launch of the new space game. It's due tomorrow on PS4 and on Friday for Windows, so Sean Murray tackles the topic of what you do in the game. He also provides links to old and new screenshots and gameplay videos from various sources. He also mentions a livestream of the game that's already concluded, but can still be viewed here. Here are some warnings about what the game is and isn't:

That means this maybe isn’t the game you *imagined* from those trailers. If you hoped for things like pvp multiplayer or city building, piloting freighters, or building civilisations… that isn’t what NMS is. Over time it might become some of those things through updates.

For instance, freighters and building bases *are* coming! Read about updates coming here.

At launch though, it’s an infinite procedural sci-fi-space-survival-sandbox unlike anything you have ever played before. If you decide to play it, you’ll see just how closely it plays to those trailers, and to our original vision. It’s a weird game, it’s a niche game and it’s a very very chill game.

Ars has a nice read on the game.

Yeah, that's a solid article.

Also... ick. From said article: And, in very bad news, NMS has already proven itself a major content recycler. Every planet I go to has the same "settlement" and "mural" structures, right down to the north-south-east-west positioning of iron-built buildings in a mountain's pit. The dynamic content generators have their limits, and it didn't take me long to find them.

This has no building/construction of any kind though, does it? That's like 99% of Minecraft's appeal. I don't see many videos of random Minecraft seeds, but thousands of "We built the Death Star in Minecraft!"

This will only be true if NMS has significant crafting/building components, which was kind of my earlier point. Where is the "sandbox" portion of this game? Upgrading your suit, gun, and ship are the only things I have seen. Is there more? If not, it isn't "like Minecraft".

The building is coming, but I don't expect it to be as robust as minecraft.

The "mark" (and I'm not saying it'll be satisfying for everyone) is naming all the planets and animals you find. It's a one in a million shot, but you might find someones planet Dickbutt some day.

(I'll be sticking with musicians names mostly - I'm going to David Bowie the shit out of this game. )

I'm liking what I see so far, classy destiny UI, awesome art direction, killer soundtrack.

PIRATES! Is still one of my favorite games, and very few aimless loot treadmills can compare to it, but this looks like a fun unique take. From the videos I've seen the exploration has a Morrowind feel about it as in cool geometry with rarely anything of value to find.

Waiting to see how the PC version turns out. the pop in on PS4 is a bit aggressive for my tastes on some planets.

I used to love sandbox and open world games but the sheer amount of these games that we've gotten in the past few years has put me off this genre somehow.
And I don't see how this is like Minecraft. In Minecraft you can actually build stuff, you can construct something and leave a lasting mark in the world. In No man's sky there is nothing like that. Even if they add base building I cannot imagine how it could compare to Minecraft because I don't think the base building will compare to the block building in Minecraft.

Sounds like a cool game to buy in about a year or so after it's had time to bake longer in the oven (i.e. added content and bug fixes).

I totally agree with this. Minecraft never sold for more than $30 right? And it still made tons of profit. NMS doesn't seem to have the multiplayer or modding, I just don't understand the the pricetag. It is spaceage modern indie Minecraft without multiplayer & modding. $60?

Since no one answered, I think they are keeping the price at $60 because they thought hype would not die down, ie: real gameplay footage not released, no early review copies sent. If you have spent a few hours watching leaked streams you will know this game is not worth $60.

It's very pretty, Bishop, but what are we looking for?

I don't think this blows up in anyone's faces. Given how small the team that made this was, they'll make their money back easily.

The wow factor feels pretty limited here, partially because everything is copy pasted but in the end I think the "beautiful solitude" can only keep you going for so long. They built an impressive scaffolding but the "game" part is missing still, and I don't think base building or turning the game into a freighter trading game is going to work.

Imagine a game like this except instead of flip florps and glip glorps you had Aliens laying eggs on planets where the indigenous life is mutated into bizarre and extremely dangerous species to contend with. It doesn't have to be "Aliens(tm)" but something, anything that gives you an on the edge of your seat experience.

It's lacking a narrative, it needs a strong adversary - the nano bots don't count as they're just a replacement of cops on a galactic scale from grand theft auto.

I get it, this is a chillax game where you're suppose to just take in the amazing accomplishment of going from planet surface to space to landing on a space station and looking down on the world you just came from out a window while walking around on said space station. And that is cool but the rest just leaves a feeling of "so close yet so far away" from being an all around amazing game.

this dialogue on the game should have happened months ago. It probably wouldve tempered peoples expectations a bit.

put Yes's Starship Trooper on repeat. In fact the art has a very 70's prog rock vibe.

yup confirmed NMS is actually a procedural 70's prog band album art generator.

That's still better than Spore, which could only produce Budgie album art

For those that are playing, is it Starbound FPS?

I'd like to know, too, but without the building aspect I cannot imagine this to be anything like Starbound.

What I love about Starbound is that I can, inbetween all the combat, the missions, the exploration and the mining, just go back to my base and try to build a nice looking 2D city. Much like what Minecraft was.

Most of us saw this coming a long way off so no real surprise. Saw a good comment on it the other day from someone who snagged an early copy saying it's exactly like Subnautica. It's a chillax simulator. Well worth it at $20 or less but certainly not full price. Ultimately I see a lot of buyers remorse and returns for this game in short order. I imagine it'll drop in price pretty fast too.

That faster it drops, the sooner I'll buy it!
