No Man Sky Patch & Plans

Saying, "I grew up reading Carmack’s .plan files for Quake, so it’s fun to be writing one of my own," Sean Murray announces a new patch for No Man's Sky. This is the expected update to pave the way for this week's release of Hello Games' space opera. He also explains the promised server wipes, saying beside today's there will be another tomorrow. The full post contains some spoilers, but this part seems unspoiled:
When we went gold five or six week ago, we posted on twitter, and literally every reply was like “hope you are going on a nice holiday!”. Some of us have, but I didn’t want to, not yet. I pictured myself somewhere staring out the window thinking about this game I’ve been working on for five years.
We’re under a pretty intense spotlight right now, and hopefully it’s easy to imagine how hard it would be to switch off from that, or how deeply we care about people’s first impression of the game.

In fact most of us were back here the day after we went gold, working on this update. We’re already proud of what we put on a disk, but if we had time, why not continue to update it?

Hello Games will continually update No Man’s Sky this way. This is the first of many.

It will be available on Monday for press for review once it exits submission, and on launch for public on PC and PS4. We expect future updates like these to continue to be free.

For 99.9% of people, all you have to do is install the update before you begin to play.
If you had an early copy somehow, your save game will technically work post update, but you will miss out on new content and experiences if you don’t delete your save before updating (should be obvious why from notes below). We highly recommend deleting your save if you have played before updating your game (we won’t do this in future, but it’s a day zero update).

Servers will be wiped on Sunday and again Monday in the lead up to launch.

It is not just a British thing. There are several (many?) poop related quests in WoW.

Unless you're talking about this part. "Creatures can poop rare resources." That doesn't inspire confidence in me for this game. Honestly, what is it about British devs incorporating poop as gameplay?

No. Unless by "real content" you mean storylines.

As for gameplay, it has more systems than GTA/Mass Effect.

Your call

When people say content what they mean is "a variety of interesting and fun things to do."

I can't see it having anywhere close to the variety of systems that GTA offered. I honestly don't think even it's exploration system will stand the test of time, at least as it stands today. Because when we think of exploring, were doing it in the star trek sense, what we want is to have adventures. Unless you're inventing them in your mind as you pop into another random system, harvest random elements and move on. It won't capture that living, breathing sense of wonder of the unknown we're craving here.

It's Blues, so the fact that there's any positivity at all means that it's most likely the greatest game ever made.

I saw that yesterday in a stream and thought it was cool. The guy started with not being able to understand the NPC at all, but as he traded, he picked up certain words.

Yeah. Same here. I usually need some kind of end goal. From what I've seen they know this. The motivation to reach the center of the universe is good enough. And this game is the one that comes closer to my Star Trek exploration dreams. I love how they turned contacting new species into a language learning mini game where you need to explore, trade and so on to learn new words from a particular species.

Watched some of the gameplay and it's not enough to take me away from Elite... it looks pretty tedious to be honest. Even though the two games are very different, they both scratch the same itch. I'll pick it up when it gets cheaper, I can't justify the cost right now.

So whats the sum of this game for bitching/liking?

Isn't it just a massive procedural galaxy with no real content yet which they know they need to fix but had to release the game to generate more revenue to do so?

So the game has potential but on release might be a littl edull

I'm definitely interested in the details and their road map.

I get the thought on where procedural coding could be a huge snore feast and I'm not excited about mega huge worlds, as I feel they can be too big for their own good. But at the same time, I have no skin in the game and have no real ill will for them, so I hope its good, there can still be fun things to be had.

"Hello Games will continually update No Man’s Sky this way. This is the first of many."

Good to hear. These guys sound genuine too, unlike some other indie devs. Think Rimworld, not Mighty No9.

There`s no way you can get project of this scale and scope "right" on the first release, not even 5th. So hope they stick with it for a bit. At the moment they should concentrate more on balancing issues rather than adding new stuff, though I suppose they`re waiting for player feedback to kick in.

One thing that worried me that I read somewhere was that it`s "hard to die". That would be a serious damper...sure as hell first thing I will try to do is actually die in as many ways as possible to gauge it

But, with updates, rebalancing difficulty or adding some harder tiers a la Survival or Ironman shouldn`t be a problem. In fact Ironman with randomized spawns after death is what I really wish for...

Hardly a fair comparison. At least NMS has a retail product on the market.

lol, other than both have spaceships, how exactly are they similar? a day-0 patch?? SCANDAL!

Also I'm pretty sure NMS didn't have a 100m crowdfunding campaign bilking people out of money for virtual products that don't even exist yet.
