It would be far more worth their while to simply make their new Source Engine run Vulkan (no support for DirectX) and make it free to use with decent documentation. That could have a lot of benefits both for Valve and the gaming industry to and extent.

It's a bit sad that 20 years ago John Carmack basically attempted the same thing with using his tremendous influence to push OpenGL onto Windows platform.

Technically, he succeeded, and by now we should be able to have OpenGL-based games which are competitive with DirectX, and easy to port to Linux.

But it appears that driver manufacturers have been slacking off, and Windows OpenGL support is not suitable for anything serious.

I think that it's strange that Valve doesn't spend its billions on a high-performing Wine alternative. If they truly feel threatened by Windows, this is the way to go. It allows people to install Linux, have access to all their legacy titles, and allows Valve full control over their client. Win-win-win.

That wouldn't be worth it, if something like that became widespread enough Microsoft could and would mess with it. It would turn into a game of cat and mouse where every fix takes a lot more time and effort than the breaks Microsoft adds, because "reasons".

My previous Windows 7 install lasted close to 6 years and was still working fine, until the motherboard gave in.

Current Win7 install has been going for close to a year and only had one system crash thanks to AV/Firewall having a fight.

To think it came out while that weirdo Steve Ballmer was CEO of Microsoft, noone seemed to like him, look how things are going since...

Yes I'm disappointed but not surprised that SteamOS is not making much of a dent. It was mostly huff and puff but when all the cards fell, Valve wasn't very (monetarily or otherwise) committed to moving PC gaming to Linux. It would take at least a billion dollars (not exaggerating) to get the industry to take them seriously on several fronts.

I'm sort of the prior, I can see why they are doing this. I think more of the power user computer people will find more issue to these stronger armed tactics. But there are millions that need a tighter controlled system for their systems to stay functioning.

Personally I haven't hit the point that their issues can't be overcome with a little more work on my end after an update. But again, I get your point certainly. Yes this could all go tragically wrong, but I don't want to cry wolf too early either.

It's actually very simple for me at this point: I want to play DirectX games and the future of DirectX games is on Windows 10 unfortunately so you got to take the good with the bad and the bad with the good.

If there were a serious alternative (no, I do not think that Wine is a serious enough alternative in terms of compatibility and performance) or if DirectX 12 would be available for Windows 7 including mainstream support on Windows 7 beyond 2020 then I would have stuck with Win 7 forever after or moved on to another OS that supports DirectX gaming.

I finally booted back into Win 10 last night to deffer the update. Then promptly booted back to Win 7 lol. Though thanks to Win 10 I now have a triple boot system and will be migrating to Linux as my main OS. I doubt game devs will move to Linux so I'll still have to boot to Win 10 in the future to play newly released games. If they'd fix that games issue I could probably dump Windows altogether now.

Ars claims Mint 18 is the bomb.

In absence of any of that, well... Windows 10 it is... but I'm less than impressed with Microsoft's NWO so far. I find it especially annoying (coming from the Win 7 Ultimate version) that they do not respect Windows 10 Pro as a more customizable environment and have actually taken away customization options with the AU.

Microsoft once again totally fails at respecting their users. Why not give people a choice between "dummy" mode and "expert" mode? Pro should be "expert" by default. Home shouldn't be "dummy" all the way either but at least configurable to some extent if MS would properly respect their users.

But no... instead they feel like they have to go chasing Apple's walled garden approach about a decade too late. That bunch of primates!

Because we have different needs, so far I'm good with it. I like the improvements overall. Things that could bother one are an non-factor to another. What more can I say?

I have stored Win7 images of each system I upgraded, if somehow Win10 goes completely sideways and 7 is still the last bastion of freedom we know, I'm about 30 minutes away on each to be a Win7 household again.

So he mentions two issues:

Puts skype back on your system. Yeah we all rather not be bothered with an app we don't want. I assume you can just take it back off?

[...]

I'm not saying any of this is great, I'm just not so sure it is all that different then it has ever been. The only real difference is their persistence on wanting to update you.

It did not just (re-)install Skype but the entire Microsoft shit app catalogue of a dozen+ apps from 3D Builder to the Store to the Shitbox app (even if or especially if you had previously uninstalled them). No option, no user prompt, nothing. Boom. Apps back again. Suck it up, maggots!

And you're saying this is no different than before? Really? So, when did Windows 7 dump a ton of crapware/spyware programs right on top of ya? When did Windows 7 update and reset your VGA driver (as the anniversary update did)? When did Windows 7 update and -without user consent- change a bunch of settings or remove the ability to change them back (removal of certain group policies etc.)?

Sorry but the disrespect Microshit is sporting with regard to their users is at a new all-time high. It is incredible what Win 10 customers have to put up with, free "upgrade" or not.

Well I won't say times aren't changing, they are. For some reason I didn't uninstall/remove their apps because I figure they are core enough to the overall O/S good or bad. I just don't use them.

I get your point though and it isn't wrong.

I guess it's going to be can you see their goal and are ok enough with it or have they crossed the line in the sand and no more of any of this!? If you're into self flagellation you can still get W10 for "free" with "free" no longer meaning what it used to mean.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/accessibility/windows10upgrade

They're suppose to be closing that loophole soon, you'll need to prove you're blowing through a tube to type on the screen or something.

Regardless, soon or Soon™, loophole is still looping if your into beta operating systems.

As for Windows 10, resistance is futile!!

I'm sure they're working overtime to stop people from using start menu replacements and uninstalling their apps, Skype is now integrated into Windows, or so someone said in the comments section of that article. Weeeeee!
