Well Microsoft's free Windows 10 upgrade offer ended yesterday. I wonder how
well their strong-arm tactics worked in improving penetration of the new OS?
They missed their chance with me, because I have no interest in updating my
Windows 7 PC, though they totally could have gotten my on my laptop if they had
extended the offer to older versions. This relic is still running Windows Vista,
of all things, and if it is capable of running Win10, that would probably be an
improvement. What it would definitely improve is that machine's ability to
update itself. I don't use it that often (obviously, or I wouldn't be putting up
with Vista), and when I fired it up recently it took about a full day to process
and install all the Windows updates it needed. This has apparently become a
widespread problem with Vista over the course of time, with some users
expressing suspicions that this is another of Microsoft's ways of forcing
upgrades. I hope that's not the case, as that might be a harbinger of what could
eventually happen to Windows 7.

If you haven't, the latest WU diagcab is really, really good and clears up almost all issues in one shot. /shrug

Yeah it's not the logical connection to think that WSUS Offline would help in this regard but at least for me this tool is one of the few essentials I have always on my backup drive. When WU refuses to update, WSUS offline does.. always. Though sometimes It actually requires that you cut the internet connection so WU doesn't get stuck in an automated search loop or crashes randomly during these update installs.
Anyway, glad it worked for you... I have had a TON of WU issues so yeah. Always fun, isn't it?

I didn't upgrade, I have no need for it at this time. As long as new games aren't using that new DirectX soley, then I'm fine.

Good luck. I'm 50-50 with fixing broken windows 7 update. Often only a reinstall fixes it.
Never had a problem with Win7 until the push to Win10 started. The April 2016 spyware update crashed one computers win-update, and I've been having problems with win-update on vista-10 installs ever since.
If you have broken WU, you need to get WSUS Offline (google that) and let it download all needed patches and apply them...
It takes a while, but once done you have an offline storage of all updates. Great thing to put on a backup USB drive and have it attached when you reinstall Windows so you can update literally offline.

Vista and 7 are the same OS with different branding. They share the driver structure, and they share the same planned-obsolescence "forever-update" problem that MS inflicted on "legacy users".
I managed to fix it on one of my 7 machines using a guide, but not on others.

9 times out of 10 a clean install is the way to go.
But with Windows 10, nine out of ten installs are DIRTY.

I guess it's funny, maybe not, but I have never owned a real version of windows. I did try once, and ended up with a technet version of win 7 for $20 or so. That was eventually busted, so I went with another corporate install, and then beat on that till MS accepted my version and ungraded me to win 10. It's a better games machine, there is no doubt. My ESO install, with about the same frame rate, was noticeably smoother.
I'm a happy camper, with my managed win 10, to run my games. I have not used windows seriously since NT 3.51, when I decided Linux would be more fun.

It was terrible. Even though it's lightly used, I had app issues and the OS itself was running very sluggish, waiting 2 -3 times longer for things to open and process.
After a full wipe and fresh install, it runs super smooth with no issues.

Updated my mom's Vista laptop to 10 no problem.
If I could have upgraded my Vista laptop for free I would have. I've been fighting the slow as shit updates for a few months now, actually think I posted about it here. It'll either get stuck on downloading or checking. Finally got it to update yesterday, I think manually installing KB3168965 and turning off updates finally allowed to to check for updates and download/install within a unit of time that didn't see large shifts in the position of the sun. There seem to be a lot of fixes out there, so who knows what actually works. I'm sure M$ has TOP MEN, working on the issue

Yeah, Windows updates slowdown issue, stuck at 0% or 99%.. well known problems.. had to use WSUSOFFLINE to fix this half a dozen times... I don't think it is intentional by MS, just extremely shitty coding of windows update.
I have experienced the Windows Update SLOWDOWN on 3 machines (2 personal, 1 client) Of course these were all 7 boxes.
