PC Disney Infinity to Cease Working

Disney has followed up on their announcement that they are cancelling Disney Infinity as part of their exit from the game publishing business (thanks Eurogamer). The Disney Infinity website has word that the console editions will retain some offline functionality, as will the Steam version, but the standalone PC editions will cease to work at all in the near future, with the Windows 8/10 edition to continue into March of next year and the other PC versions to give out on September 30th. Here's the complete rundown on when the game disks become coasters and the related toys become dust-catchers:
Below is an overview of the timelines and additional details are available on our FAQ pages.

As of today (July 29, 2016)

  • No in-game purchases can be made within the PC, Steam version of Disney Infinity 2.0, iOS, Google Android, Amazon Android and Apple TV versions of the game as this feature has now been removed
  • You can continue to make in-game purchases within the Steam version of Disney Infinity 3.0.

As of September 30, 2016

  • You will no longer be able to log in to play the PC, iOS, Google Android and Amazon Android versions of Disney Infinity, these will no longer be available on the respective app stores
  • The Steam versions of Disney Infinity 2.0 & 3.0 will remain operational with the exception of all online services and community features as these will be discontinued.
  • Apple TV versions of Disney Infinity will be removed from the AppStore
  • The Disney Infinity Community team will no longer be reviewing or approving any new Toy Boxes that are submitted to Disney for all console, mobile and PC versions of the game. However if you are playing on any console, Apple TV or Windows 8/10 versions of the game, you can continue to download your favorite Toy Boxes from the Community Content section until March 3, 2017

As of January 3, 2017

  • No in-game purchases can be made within the Windows 8/10 versions of the game as this feature will be removed

As of March 3, 2017

  • Apple TV and Windows 8/10 versions will no longer be available, supported or playable
  • All Disney Infinity online services and community features for all versions will be discontinued

Stunt Island all over again.

I bought Stunt Island and played it for years, at least until Disney stopped selling/supporting it, so when I saw INfinity come out, I remembered what Disney did with SI, so I steered clear of Infinity.
It looked like a lot of fun, but way too proud in price for the short life span of the game.

I don't think you mean Stunt Island, which was a one-off, boxed product in 1992 and didn't have any DLC or require (or even support) any outside support from the studio.

Yeah, I think WoW was a pretty good deal 10 years ago but the genre has stagnated and at the loss of good MP CRPG co-op romps (Which to be honest there were not many of back then either).

Total Annihilation, Warcraft 2 and Starcraft even let one or two guests per legit cd play MP if I remember correctly. Good times long gone. The command+conquer games came on 2 discs and both could be used for MP. Such generosity (And the shareware FPS's) got the LAN/Internet scene going, now a LAN can be very expensive for those who don't have all the games being played. I have some very annoyed Diablo 3 owning friends who mistakenly thought that was a good investment on a launch day LAN.

If the hobby of gaming drives you to a maddening rage on a daily basis it's time to find a new hobby.

Or maybe Disney could, like, release the server code so people who paid into this game could host their own servers and keep playing.

It mostly has to do with pointless overreaction. If you've opted out of playing MMOs (I know I have), then what do you really care about here?

This is a freaking luxury entertainment product we're talking about, not food, water and clothing.

MMO's were the original online DRM, aka those gamers who knew not to pay for a game you didn't control and could be taken away from you. The problem is "MMO" is marketing speak for a piece of software whos multiplayer code has been taken hostage on the other side of the internet. Notice that games like neverwinter nights, dungeon siege - rpg's with multiplayer disappears with the rise of drm'd rpg's like Guild wars, World of warcraft and EQ because the average rpg player is so fucking moronic, thereby paving the way for acceptance of software you dont control.

The fact that world of warcraft servers have been recreated is proof positive that game companies are giving players 98% of the game with a tiny bit of server code that allows them to keep control over the game.

Why get annoyed? Because this cancer has infected all of gaming. Starcraft 2 and diablo 3 have fucking online drm them and LAN removed, why the fuck would anyone with half a brain who gamed during the 90's not be annoyed at shit getting confiscated in agame they are paying good fucking money for?

This reminds me, need to go to target and see if I can pick up some cheap toys or a 3.0 kit before they disappear!

I can't stand it but the 7yo daughter things beating up Iron Man with Elsa from Frozen is the shit.

And this is why "software as a service" is anti-consumer at its very core. Yet no one gets very worked up about it anymore...

Because the theory behind keeping businesses honest doesn't work at scale, aka online drm would not be a thing if we were two blocks away from game companies. Physical proximity of customer to the busines is everything in keeping businesses honest. Without that they just do what they want no matter how fraudulent or corrupt.

MMO's were the original "Software as a service" let's remember, and there are a lot of EQ, ultima online and wow retards that enabled drm.

Let's remember MMO' is marketing speak and business propagnada, there's no logical reason players can't run "private" mmo servers. So let's remember, this started with the average mmo rpg player showing the game industry how dumb the average rpg gamer really is that spread like cancer to the rest of the industry.

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11444122

It's not that people are not annoyed by it, many are, the problem is business only has to wait for a new generation of children who grow up with it and are ignorant of what has happened.

The real problem is people who grew up and emotionally connected to wow, ultima, EQ or any other "online game" are gullible and emotionally driven they pretty much greenlighted steam, drm, microstranscations and online drm.

Hell world of warcraft players are so stupid they will pay money for in game items via blizzards on store for pets and stupid shit for a game the never own, world of warcraft is proof humanity generally are fucking morons.
