New NVIDIA TITAN X Announced

NVIDIA has unveiled the TITAN X, a new flagship video card based on their Pascal architecture, perhaps courting confusion by retaining the same name as their last top-of-the-line model. They call this "without question, the world’s ultimate graphics card," and say it will be available August 2nd, though there are ongoing shortages and price-gouging on the 1080 series launched at the end of May, so it may be a while before you can find one, and it may be longer finding one at list price (widely-reported to be $1200.00). A video introduces the new card by posing it naked for your voyeuristic needs, and here's word:
NVIDIA TITAN X has 11 TFLOPS of power, 3584 CUDA Cores, 12GB of 10Gbps GDDR5X VRAM, a 384-bit Memory Interface, 480 GB/sec of Memory Bandwidth, boosts to 1.5GHz out of the box, utilizes superior heat dissipation vapor chamber cooling technology, and features a stunning design. It is, without question, the world’s ultimate graphics card.

For $1200 I would expect custom closed liquid cooling loop built with radiator on this card.

This card is just a pure cash grab from nvidia and not a proper "titan" ie - bridging card with strong fp64 for computation like predecessors. Its clearly top dog gaming card for rich folks. Sadly this is what lack of competition does for top end. Until we get some amd card in that segment this will continue - inflated prices of 1080s and stock shortages to create more demand. Forget "non Founder" prices just like I predicted on launch (not a single 599$ card sold since the launch) Yet pr outfits - ie tech press almost creamed themselves over 1080s 599$ value. Getting shafted on cpus from intel now same thing on gfx side. Depressing.

This makes sense if this generation has standard gains of say 25% over the previous. But we are around a 75%+ gain, so there is no shame at all in any of these cards. I'm cool seeing what a Titan can do, but I'll never own one, no big. Smart biz getting rich mans money.

Amen to that. My GTX970s will foot the bill for now. Once a killer app arrives, I guess I'll send the orcs over to NVidia, and we will come to an arrangement to 'liberate' a few units for the benefit of the 'good' folks of Barad-Dur.

It would be a tad less embarrassing if the orcs would use these cards for real games. But their favorites seem to be The Sims 4, and BeJeweled. So sad.

I think it's more like taking a 455 hp, $60,000 Corvette, fiddling with the computer, giving it 546 hp, then charging $120,000.

Really puts to the foreground the ever widening divide between the top end and midrange during the last 10 years+. Back then midrange used to get you 66% to 75% of top end's performance.

Nowadays, midrange gets you 25-40% of top end's performance. No wonder they took 7 years this time to achieve a fourfold increase in midrange perf compared to the 4 years before it and 2 to 3 years before that.

I am still trying to imagine the work that goes into something that has 12 billion transistors. 12 billion.

the idea that there are people in the world who can follow the logic or create the cad files for something with 12 billion transistors..

What's the point of:

Intel i7 6950X?
Razer Blade?
Ferrari 488 GTB?

Why make nice things that push boundaries of size and performance to challenge the competition and sell shit to rich people, or high-tech businesses that can make use of cutting edge technology for an advantage?

The biggest problem is that it doesn't push any boundaries. This is not an original Titan that was a big as possible and had ridiculous capabilities. Nvidia took their very best and priced it at $1000.00. That card could do it all and it was BARGAIN for the right type of power user.

This Titan is probably 2/3 as big, die size, as it could be and uses a new, but not the best, memory system. It's just a bigger gaming card commanding a HUGE premium price for little reason other than, people with means will buy it because it's the fastest. There's nothing wrong with any of that. If the market will bear it, sell it at $1200.00. I'm only concerned because AMD is a complete no-show in this segment for the next 6 months and I'm priced out of meaningful upgrades. I don't want to be priced out of my hobby. That would suck.

Now that big old GP100 die they showed off a couple months ago. 16gb of HBM2, 4000+ shader cores, floating point compute for your mama? That's a GPU worthy of the name. Gamers will never see it though.

Bernie is Titan X compared to that overheating, power hungry orangutan with orange hair implants.

That said, I would never buy a Titan X.

Yeah, the Titan is a halfway point between GeForce and Quadro/Tesla.

I had thought it might be something like that. Thanks.

Also, to those who brought up I was looking at benchmark for the old TitanX... I know. That's why I compared to the 980ti, not the 1080.

I'd assume at that price it is dual core (although I don't see any mention of that), and has at least 2x the performance of a 1080. But it says 11 TFLOPs while the regular 1080 is 9 TFLOPs at 1/2 the cost, so looks like you'll get like ~20% better performance for 100% more money?
