Out of the Blue

My recent success in fixing the broken arm on my Aeron chair inspired an attempt at a further repair, as the chair's pneumatic gas cylinder has lost most of its pep over the years. The good news is that the size of these parts is the same, so you can use a generic replacement. What should also be good news is that these are held together by friction, so you are supposed to be able to wrench the old one out pretty easily, and there are videos on YouTube showing what an easy process this is. The bad news is that it is also easy to search the internet to find many people suffering from the same problem I am, which is the cylinder is completely jammed into both ends, and has so far defied every effort to remove it. Following the advice of some who are similarly stuck, I have applied a healthy dose of WD-40 and will take another crack at this when that's had a chance to work its way in (and temperatures permit).

On the aeron's cylinder the base wasn't too bad. But removing it from the chair seat was a pain. Had to get a socket that was the exact size of the ring, have someone else hold the chair while the other beat on the socket to unplug the cylinder. Took less than an hour to replace it using this method, but not easy by any means.
