Windows Gaming Survey

Finally admitting they don't know what PC gamers want, Microsoft has launched a Windows Insider Program PC Gamers Survey to help get them back on track (thanks GameSpot). Here's what they hope to accomplish:
Thank you for participating in this survey! In a previous Windows Insider survey you told us that you are a PC Gamer. We aim to build the best Windows yet for gaming, so we’re reaching out to understand what’s important to you in PC gaming. Your opinions are very important to us, and we appreciate your help.

Please know we take your privacy extremely seriously. Your responses are not associated with you individually unless you choose to provide your Microsoft account email.

My comment at end:

Get rid of crappy windows store, that restricts features and makes games bought there inferior compared to things like steam. Stop trying to screw PC games up. I still have games that were crippled by GFWL, both when it was alive, and when it was canceled by you. Stop promising to rededicate yourself to PC gaming, and then shutting down game studios. Stop trying to push latest windows so hard with stupid "exclusive" games. Remember the exclusive halo PC game, where all that was required was to bypass installer check to get it to install on older OS? PC gaming goes better when you stay completely out of it and just focus on next version of directx.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA right fucking on!

The questions in that survey blatantly show their ignorance, silly assumptions etc.

I was disappointed that they tried to keep the word association game positive. I really had to dig to find something positive to check about Razer, Xbox, and Microsoft.

I chose "never heard of them" I'm not going to say positive things about crap lol.

Think the smallest HDD size they still manufacture is either 150GB or 250GB both in single platter configurations. Which of course is funny, because I sadly remember when I got my first 250MB HDD(first new desktop our family got had a quantum 40MB HDD in it though) and thought I'd never fill it, then 1TB a few years later.

Hehe. My very first PC (that I bought together with my dad) had a 53MB HD in it. When it got full (Wing Commander plus speech pack was like 30MB!!!) we took it back to the store, and they let us upgrade to a 127MB HD. When we came home with it, we both agreed we "would never fill that."

127MB.

Given MS's behavior the last few years post Bill, I am pretty cynical as to what ends they will put this input.

A month from now they will release a statement that says "After going through hundreds of thousands of replies, one thing became overwhelmingly clear: Xbox One is the most favored gaming system in the world, and everything PC gamers want is already included in our magnificent console!"

And that will literally be it.

You can find remanufactured drives that are 100GB and less, but they're expensive. Generally running the price of what you'd pay for 1TB or more e.g. $40-125, and if you really need a drive that's locked due to particular reasons you're like at EOL on the hardware anyway.

Most likely it is to craft the spin of their marketing efforts rather than actually improving the value of the product to the customer, instead of cramming it with surveillance and lock-downs.

Few excerpts from my survey:
- Integrate Windws Store with Steam as there is very little reason to use it due to lack of current or back titles.
- Make the desktop more useful for gamers (and I don't mean the Xbox homepage as that doesn't work for 2k+ displays)
- Redo Windows Experience to provide a benchmark on a PC and inturn give all games a score based on on CPU, GFX, etc and thus can suggest improvements to make it run better on your PC

Ditto. Though with that said, other than the current state of UWP games, I don't have any real complaints about Windows 10. For desktop gaming it works well.

Where'd they get that list of hard drive sizes, 2009? Can you even buy a new HD that's 99GB or less, and why would you? Windows + Steam + a AAA 2016 game = full.

I hope they enjoy the 990-ish characters I crammed into those text boxes, and with only 60% of their RDA of sarcasm per paragraph!

They called it out in a recent Silicon Valley episode: you can't just let a bunch of engineers who think like you try the product, you have to let some real humans, even some of the mouth-breather distinction, have a crack at it. One of my favorite examples: in one of the Win10 betas, the actually-installing-Windows part of the process had "Setup" used four different ways (eg "Setting up" "Configuring setup") for stages of the same 0-100% progress screen. Maybe it meant something different to the engineers who coded it, but it was somewhere between meaningless and frustratingly obtuse to any end user.

Yes. True for UWP (Windows store exclusive) apps. You can not mod UWP games, no multi GPU, no G-Sync/FreeSync, no MSI Afterburner, no Fraps, no GeForce Experience (no ShadowPlay), i.e. no support for any overlay 3rd party app at all.

UWP apps = GFWL 2.0 ... only even shittier than ever!

Is all their announced Win 10 games coming out under UWP?

All MS's games, yes.

I hadn't heard about it either until saw it come up on the survey, so I did some Google-fu before answering. The top search results from a few months ago said the G-Sync/FreeSync had been patched. The articles I read said that the same games sold through Steam or elsewhere didn't have those problems, but I didn't know about not being able to mod Windows Store exclusive games. I don't plan on buying shit through the Windows Store anyway.

As someone who's old... the dream of intel and MS is to develop hardware where they lock it down and totally control it to extract rents via licensing fee's, etc. Trusted computing was all the rage in the late 90's/early 2000's in PC tech rags. These things are always with us... the corporate world will stop at nothing for profits.

Yes Microsofts new strategy is to turn the PC into a walled garden like the smart phone market. Once MS saw apple and Valve and increasingly game companies get away with invasive software/drm they want to infiltrate everything you do. Which is why windows 10 is a privacy nightmare.

The googles, facebooks, activisions, apples and valves of the world are all getting away with murder and being rewarded. So MS see's that and why should microsoft be left out of all those profits when all the sharks are feeding on the money of the masses?

Microsft doesn't care about PC gaming, it cares about controlling and developing a new software ecosystem that is 100% locked down the equivalent of apps for iphone. They want to turn PC's into an corporate mostly dumb malware client they control. The corps of the world want to turn us into a "permission" feudal society. Where we're told how to use, and what we can do with the things we buy.

Let's be honest people have been giving up their rights hand over fist for convenience and because the bulk of humanity is at chimp level intelligence when it comes to understanding the consequences of their short term behaviour on their long term interests.

The end goal of these big companies is to phase in hardware drm at some point, given that they've been successful in just waiting for an new batch of ignorant kids and marketing games to them on technology they have no clue works. I wouldn't be surprised if in another 50-100 years the entire population of earth is being drip fed and permanently monitored by Microsoft and company via operating system.

Basically mankind is undergoing re-enslavement via infinite expansion of bullshit IP laws and treacherous hardware implementations and software encyrtion.

Companies are funding encrypted computing, they would at some point like everything encrypted and the code of a game/app for customer is mostly inaccessible. AKA "it's magic", everything is purposely obscured in invisible software the user never see's.

We're seeing this with denuvo

I feel like the section asking you why you prefer PC gaming is a joke... It's like it's trying to convince the person taking the survey that PC is better. Also, how can PC gaming be improved by Microsoft? Leave it alone!

Edit: From what I understand(I may be completely wrong, but so far I've not been told otherwise), UWP is an app store. It has several disadvantages. The main one for me is that you don't have access to your files and executables, so the only modding possible is limited pre-baked toys like Snap Map. You can get mods like Bethesda does(and only Bethesda it seems), but they'll be limited compared to what's currently possible by modifying the files. Exemples are the script extender and ENB.
