Gone Gold - No Man's Sky

Sean Murray tweets the news that development of No Man's Sky is complete, illustrated by a photograph of the development team and the gold master disc. It was announced in May that the procedurally generated space game was delayed until August 9th-12th, and it sounds like this puts it on track this time. Here's word from the Hello Games founder: "It's happened. No Man's Sky just went gold. I'm so incredibly proud of this tiny team. 4 years of emotions." Thanks GameInformer.

"Other than the planets"... erm. You mean other than the primary reason the devs built this game? Yes, this game is going to be a pretty planet simulator. That's probably all it is. I'm cool with that, considering how early we are in the development of the pretty planet simulator genre.

No Man's Sky has to exist before my ultimate dream game will.

I think some people are incredibly short sighted - both those who think that NMS IS going to be that ultimate dream game, and those who think that if it ISN'T, it's a complete failure.

The thing though is, that your dream game, assuming that is an procedurally generated saga with the planet visuals of Mass Effect only that you can walk everywhere, and shoot everything, or.. you know, not, is never gonna happen as long as these developers target consoles with outdated hardware and inferior performance in all regards.

Oh I expect them to be just as dull. Elite tried to add some unexpected interest with the supercruise by adding interdictions. But they mostly succeeded in annoying people.

and long range travel in No Man's Sky will not be boring?
I am not a huge fan of the long range trade runs in Elite either but there aren't too many space games that makes that task don't feel like a chore.
In EVE Online you can literally watch TV while you do long distance trade runs in high sec areas.

It will be interesting to see what NMS has to offer in terms of "content" and fun factor.
From the videos they've showed so far, I am not convinced I'd be entertained beyond the first 2 hrs

If it takes you 10m to destroy a single enemy in elite you're definitely doing it wrong. The small ships I can have down in a couple seconds. The bigger ones maybe a minute or two.

Otherwise you're making nothing but assumptions based on a few short videos that don't reveal hardly any content at all. Right now there's no evidence to assume that they've made any of that gameplay interesting.

I do agree Elite makes long range travel boring. I'm not a big fan of their supercruise implementation.

I am also going to name a plant and everything on the planet, Steve. I think it would be awesome to land of a planet named Steve.

I just remembered I wanted to name a planet Bob (inspired by Titan A.E.)! "You can't name a whole planet, Bob."

While yes, procedural generated content has some people thinking every planet will be a unique experience, it doesn't mean every planet is going to have the same or similar creations with different color patterns either. And no, I don't expect it to even approach Elite Dangerous levels of boring; with 10-minutes to shoot down a single enemy and mind-numbing space travel. How they managed to make travel through space boring is beyond me but they succeeded beyond my wildest imaginings.

I'm going into this game expecting a decent amount of content and the ability to create my own. I want to be a space trader & explorer by day, pirate by night. I'll spend a lot of time exploring and trading rare resources but also some of my time blowing up ships for their cargo and making friends with the seedier alien life.

*Scanning* That ship is carrying purple Florp. They are worthless in this sector but I know a planet with aquatic aliens who keep them as exotic pets and cannot get enough of them!

I expect the experience to be somewhat like Freespace. Not a huge amount of directed content so some people put 20 hours in and called it played. Others - like myself - spent hundreds of hours in that game making it our own and hardly touching the generic 'missions'.

Yeah, I'm with you on this. It'll be interesting to see if this will be more interesting than Elite. Right now I'm expecting it to be exactly as boring.

Elite has missions, numerous ships of different classes and a robust trading system. I think No Man's Sky is even more barebones, other than the pretty planets? I liked Elite for what it was. I'm wary about this one though.

Elite has its flaws, but other than the animal life it's already doing everything they're promising NMS can do. I'm not entirely sure why people think NMS will be that much better.

The funny thing about naming things oddly, is if you believe the creators, it's likely no one else will ever see the things you have named. It is masturbation at cosmic scale.
