Evolve Going Free

Even though the countdown on the Evolve website mentioned this morning is still running, a post on the Turtle Rock Forums reveals the news that the asymmetrical shooter is going free-to-play, something people suspected might be the plan when the game ceased being available for sale earlier today (thanks jacobvandy). The lengthy post includes a frank discussion of how Evolve lost a lot of enthusiasm over controversial DLC implementation after launching to mixed reviews, and how the elimination of the purchase price and a "vigorous overhaul" of the game are at the core of how they plan to "get that magic back." They will re-launch the game for free as a beta tomorrow as they work towards evolving Evolve to better match audience expectations. Here's word on those plans and how they will compensate those who have already paid for the game:
Making Evolve free on PC is going to be a process that takes time and a lot of hard work, but we believe in Evolve and we believe in you, our players and want to do what’s best for both!

Here’s how it’s going to work: We’re going to make Evolve free on PC as a Beta starting on July 7. This is going to allow us to hit our new server infrastructure really hard and we need your help testing. Stuff could break, and that’s our hope, because that will give us time to improve things as we go. We’ll parse out major Beta revisions, updates and features over a period of weeks and months -- a plan we're going to continually communicate here. This allows us to test new features and major changes to make our game more accessible and ever closer to the joy we saw when we first showed our baby to the world. Just as importantly, this Beta plan gives us the flexibility and time we need to keep fixing bugs and making Evolve more stable.

“What about those who paid for Evolve? What about Season Passers?”

Anyone who owns classic Evolve will be given “Founder” status in the new free version, and all the content you already own comes with you to the new version. As long as we work on Evolve, we will show our appreciation for our committed fans and early adopters with gifts, rewards, and special access. Why? Because you believed like we did, and we will never forget that.

As part of our promise to recapture the magic and improve the Evolve experience across-the-board, we're going to ratchet up our communication with the community. We will be continually updating our social channels, our forums and our website to let you know how it’s going.

Well, I mean, you're somewhat at fault for buying a game based solely upon hype rather than word of mouth, right? You took a risk. Risks don't always pay off.

But, assuming you bought it, what would you rather have - a game with no community that you paid for and others need to pay for, because that feels "fair," or a game with a more lively community that people are now getting substantially cheaper, or even free?

I'd rather get something for my money, personally, but I get how people feel screwed. It feels like backwards thinking - either your $60 is totally lost, or it may not be totally lost but no one else is ever going to pay that again.

Evolve is a reason why I like open betas.
The beta was boring, so I didn't buy it. And even if they don't include some terrible Pay-2-Win scheme, the game is still boring, so being free doesn't change anything.

Meanwhile, I bought Overwatch on launch because of its open beta, and I'm happy with the purchase. It works both ways.

I felt dumb for buying this POS when it was on sale. There were almost no people playing when I tried to play. The player base tanked pretty quickly after launch, I guess, according to everyone.

At least now there might be some more people to play with, assuming it's even worth the bother, but seeing as they've mismanaged the game so badly already, I wonder what kind of hare-brained monetization scheme they're coming up with.

With the "founder" status it doesn't seem to far off from what they did with TF2, so I have no issue with it. Granted TF2 was a game I bought in the OB and liked from the start, and Evolve always seemed like a mess, but I will give it a go for free.

It seems like they are at least trying. I mean, the game wasn't really going anywhere with the previous model.

Also, TF2 was only a $20 game with no additional costs added to that. Once they added the hats years later, and saw how much money that was making, they made the game F2P and expanded upon the hats thing.

What in the blue fuck?

I'm curious to know if you sweethearts will be giving me the opportunity to have anal sex with your entire marketing team? Because right now mine feels like it's been ridden up and down the block a few times, then sent off with not so much as a thank you or even a cup of coffee..
TR/2K's endless fuckery concerning the complete and total failure of this game of theirs is truly impressive.

Are these bottom feeders even human?

This game is just straight up boring, on paper it might have sounded like a good idea but somewhere in the execution phase it didn't turn into an amazing experience.

F2P means you'll have to grind your ass off or pay up. Good luck to whoever wants to waste either their time or money on this one.

Ok the game is going F2P.... but why would it take more work when you could just give out the game for free.

So question is, what version of the game are people getting? It sounds like micro-transactions are coming.

We worked on it for years and then, suddenly, people got to experience our game, controller in-hand.

Funny I never played it with a "controller". Is that what makes it fun?
