This is complete bollocks, from somebody who played SS2 at release and only later played SS1. SS1 has plenty of boxy and unnatural level architecture in it owing in part to the engine limitations. SS2 is far better at passing off the spaceship vibe.

They changed the scope of the kickstarter game?

Can't say I'm that upset about this. System Shock was innovative for its time, but its level-design and gameplay hearken back to an era when FPS games were pointless mazes gated by find-the-keycard puzzles, and hasn't aged well because of it. Just adding some more polygons and shaders wouldn't have made the game any more palatable. With a reboot, they aren't quite as tied down. That's not to say I want them to go whole-hog and change everything, but I'm quite willing to let them make necessary changes to the levels and gameplay.
Now, if they ever get around to re-doing System Shock 2, then that's a different story. Graphics (and last few levels) aside, that game came as close to perfection as any and they'd better not screw around with it ;-)

the informations from polygon:
- The kickstarter for this goes live on June 28th.
- The kickstarter launch coincides with a FREE demo for Windows on Steam, GOG, and Humble Bundle (and you do not have to pledge anything to try it)

So basically they ran out of money and now want money to complete the game?

Couldn't they offer both? Seems like they are pretty far along with the remaster. Finish that then reboot. If you're worried about cannibalization just package them together.

- The kickstarter will have several reward tiers if you really want to invest in it: "collector's edition box with a physical copy of the game (launching on both Windows PC and Xbox One), a miniature and a manual, among other items; there's also a Razer-brand laptop with System Shock-centric detailing. There will be other rewards offered on a variety of tiers."
- Here is a picture of the Collector's Edition box
- If you need a new laptop, here is what the special Razer laptop looks like with custom 'system shock'-centric detailing
Other neat stuff:
- Concept art of the maps(from the looks of it, pretty much just like SS1 maps - a giant free-form maze, not linear)
- medical bay stuff
- weapons
I know it may be too early to say, but this might be a winner. Night Dive Studios are no slouches and they are proving themselves with the old IPs they are buying up that were sitting in purgatory. The SS1 Enhanced Edition is fantastic with the updated controls. They also released that other old shooter someone mentioned (Strife), and also Turok 1 (Turok 2 arriving soonish).
At least with the Demo we can find out exactly what kind of design they are going for. Its a very smart move. So I'll wait and see what they're made of as far as doing SS1 justice.

Looking forward to the Glory Kills and highlighted assets everywhere.
Odds are 100 to 1 the game will be consolized messed up.
Reboot? No. Just no. Who are you guys, and what gives you the right to think you can reboot one of the greatest games of all time?
