Out of the Blue

Okay, it was 20 years ago today that QUAKE was first released, a remarkable anniversary for a remarkable game that helped propel the shooter genre into the present. This has me awash in memories of those days... writing down IP addresses for servers before QuakeSpy, complaining about LPBs, discovering the first modifications, and more. Happy birthday QUAKE, thanks for the memories, and thanks to all of you for helping form so many of them over all these years.

Happy (belated) level up day Quake. Thank you for the good times. Special thanks to Trent Reznor for providing that awesome soundtrack, I couldn't get tired of it even though it had to go in MP matches.

Graduation gifts should be limited to Steam Gift Cards, Alcohol delivered to my door, and a full body massage by Chris Evans (Captain America suit is optional, but must bring the shield).

Special thanks to Batz for all his help, support, and someone I could aspire to be like, especially after this last year.

Congratz for finally going FULL ELF!

What, you never, ever go FULL ELF? Whatever. Congratulations are in order, Mr. Elf.

Thank you all. I'm 6'3 (got my cap and gown today), so just imagine if I'm a Half Elf, what a Full Elf would look like. The Incredible Hulk-Elf™ doesn't quite roll off the tongue.

I didn't get broadband until mid 2002. DSL was available for years, but not in my neighborhood. My neighborhood sat in a dead zone or something. The neighborhood sat in between two major roads that had other neighborhoods branching off of them. The main roads as well as the other neighborhoods that branched off of them had DSL, but not mine. I couldn't even get 56k dialup and was still stuck on 33.6k until the cable co. started offering ineternet service.

I think i upgraded my PC 3 times just to try and get better FPS in timerefresh and timedemo demo1... and that was before it went GL!

Eventually buying an orchid righteous voodoo 1 and inviting my mates around to show off my massively improved visuals and water_alpha.

What an amazing game. 20 years later, and it's still the best FPS by far.

And thanks Blue for sticking with us for so long I also found you by looking for quake news.

See you guys at Quakes 30th!

As someone who was still on dialup into the new millennium, I will always play the world's tiniest violin for LPBs who were affected by me and my fellow members of the 200 Plus club. Oh gee, sorry MY SUFFERING isn't pleasant for you to look at.

Threewave ctf, Action Quake and Jailbreak were my favorite mods.

Those were the days indeed, except for the 56k dialup connection that pretty much sucked.

We used to do weekly LAN parties back in those days. A couple of friends owned a computer store in town and it started out with just close friends playing at the office on weekends. Then people started inviting other people and those people started inviting others, and somehow word got around and people started just showing up.

I worked at an ISP and another friend worked at a competing ISP. This was a small town so we didn't have big name ISPs, just the two locally run places. When the LAN parties petered out, a few of us would take our computers up to one of the ISPs and get on the T1 on weekends.

Quake ran just about fine on our 486, with 8mb of memory. I believe one of the UK PC magazines remarked on it having 256 shades of brown

The minimum was a P75. What exactly where you running it on?

It's amazing how good we all got (wink) playing a game with a 300+ ping if you were lucky. Anything under 200 was put in the favorites list and mourned when it disappeared.

My brother was just starting college at a tech saavy university which had high speed internet in 1996. Let's just say it took him a few more years to finish because that first year was pretty much a waste. I used to visit him just to get that 50ish ping and crush mf'ers.

to Blue, Quake is reason I first started at this site and your dedication to it has kept me coming back here since. Thanks for 20 years keeping me unproductive at work! Cheers!
