I thought about clicking that, but then I realized I stopped giving a shit about anything Notch has to say about anything quite a while ago.

Actually it would be worth your time to click on it. Notch pretty much nailed someone talking shit, which was worth admission alone

Heh I like they dressed someone up as a Leshen. His puss peepers were pretty creepy.

The problem with Blow's comments is that videogames have been allowing you to be a mass murderer for 30 years or so. And we have more diversity in games today than pretty much ever before, so there's something for everyone. Complaining about violent games at a conference specifically for big budget spectacle is such a boring angle.

Notch is so insufferably full of himself that, to the extent that I agree with him, I feel bad about it.

That said, he's right. At multi-millions a pop, they're only making the games that they know we'll pay for. On the other hand, it's self-reinforcing - the only reason they know we like violent games, is because we bought their last violent game. And on the third hand, there's still room for something non-violent (Notch again!) to show up and disrupt the marketplace.

Except of course it's the mentally ill doing it, EVERY FUCKING TIME. It's not like, normal stable people do things like mass murder. Especially here in the US, (at least atm) untreated mentally ill have access to everything normal sane people do, but obviously they can't process information or actions, in a sane manner. The very fucking foundation of mentally illness is, abnormal emotional responses.

Selling automatic rifles to the general public (whether, white, black, muslim, atheist, mentally ill or not) is fucking insane.

We actually only sell semi-automatic rifles to the general public, not automatic rifles. Not that it makes that much difference. (Yes, you can acquire full automatic rifles in the US via a very strict, expensive, laborious, and time-consuming process, so very few people attempt it)

Can't say I agree with where Notch is coming from, though. Notch isn't defending video game violence, he's defending those making it, by saying it's what consumers want. That isn't saying "video game violence isn't bad," it's saying "capitalism is giving people what they want."

But, here's a person telling companies it isn't what he wants, and Notch is trying to correct him. That kind of doesn't work. People deciding they do not want that starts by people starting to say "hey, y'know what, companies? What you're selling isn't what I want."

    Basically, Notch is doing nothing.

Also, this is coming from someone that absolutely adores the over the top violence in Doom. I think there's a huge difference between it and, say, the wannabe Columbine simulator that was Hatred. A solid 40%-60% of my gaming is in superviolent FPS games.

Notch isn't saying nobody wants anything else, he's saying not enough people want anything else. Jonathan Blow refers to the games at E3 as if they were Hatred style "look at me, I'm so edgy" sort of crap which isn't fair as these appear to have at least a bit of substance to them.

Not enough people want it, but people need to start discussing it for people to want it.

I think Blow is wrong. I understand people saying that E3 should have acknowledged what happened over the weekend, the way virtually any other form of media would have, but I am not looking for a change in games. Or, rather, gameplay. I think there can be an enormous way tone and presentation can change, but at the end of the day, blowing shit up is still the best way to be competitive, and games are about competition.

Fair point, but this is no way to start a discussion. I would have assumed he was referring to distinguishing fantasy from reality if he hadn't clarified and regardless, it's an antagonistic way to bring up any subject.

Other tweets:
Look folks, I am not saying anything about video games causing violence or not. I'm saying, if you enjoy fantasizing about stabbing people in the neck, that is kind of gross.
Forgive me for the legal jargon but: oh sod off you bore. What a ridiculous characterisation of people who play violent videogames, which I'm pretty sure is his intention.

"Missing the bullseye" is a cheap shot. Jonathon Blow is a less successful developer than Notch - who isn't? - but he's hardly a failure.
