7 Million Play Overwatch, Minus a Bunch of Cheaters

Blizzard announces seven million players are currently enjoying Overwatch, their new first-person shooter, saying players have racked up 119 million hours of play in the game's first week. This is in spite of the fact that they have been wielding their ban hammer in Overwatch, as though they haven't made public comment about this in the west since the beta, the Chinese Overwatch forums name and shame 1,572 players before showing them the virtual door. PC Gamer also notes that reports from those who have been banned elsewhere are widespread, and they link to a forum where cheats are sold where there is much hand-wringing about "customer service" for all the cheaters there who have been booted from the game. Blizzard seem to be approaching this with a Terminator-like zeal, as PC Gamer relates an anecdote from one cheater who deleted cleaned his PC and even used a VPN to try and return to the game with fresh copies, but has been repeatedly re-banned.

It's very likely to be using one form or another of hardware banning. The HD serial number is one thing that is very hard to falsify.
Planetside 2 uses them and you'll either have to RAID your drives, use a program who has access to ring 0 (thus making it a very risky option) or buy another HD. It's quite effective, and cheating in PS2 is pretty much nonexistent as far as I'm aware.

Those lagswitching pieces of shit though...
If you mean the HD serial number assigned by software when formatting the drive, that can be changed fairly easily within windows with programs. The serial from the drive itself by reading SMART values or some such is a different matter.
They could also be going by hardware network MAC address, which is sometimes changeable but not always, and most people don't realize it. Comcast uses MACs to identify subscriber modems for instance.

The forums these cheaters post to indicate something more sinister. One guy replaced all hardware.....

As an FYI, the bought RNG boxes seem to have a lot better chance of getting decent stuff than the ones you get from leveling up playing the game.

Yeah I also heard that there was no moon landing and Obama is a reptile alien descended from the Queen of England.

Yeah be an ass when you don't know what the hell you're talking about. One of my friends who bought 50 loot crates then compared what he got from the 40+ ones he got for free while leveling would beg to differ. He got way better stuff in the bought ones. A bunch of the 1000 gold "legendary" skins, and a ton of purple stuff and lots of gold (which can be spent on directly buying stuff).

I've gotten ONE legendary skin in almost 40 levels (for a hero I'll never play), a small handful of purples but lots of duplicates of common items (they only give you 20% of the value of duplicates in gold, so 5 gold for each duplicate common). I don't even have enough gold to buy a purple item (250 gold).

Ive played the game since sunday. Ive already got 275 gold, one purple and one gold skin. And a bunch of other shit...Yeah guess what? I didn't buy shit other than the game at 40 bucks, and Im lvl 15 or 16. So there is that. 16 boxes opened so far...So yeah, let's just for arguments sake consider which is more likely. That your crackpot theory is true based on on the experience of you and ONE of your friends, or that you and he were simply unlucky with the RNG...

Super polished game, easily accessible and good fun for a while but what you see is really what you get. The game has very little depth and the matches become very samey quite quickly.
I still recommend if you like these style games and don't have the opportunity to play games that require a larger time investment just don't expect it to stay interesting for long.

I've been enjoying it, started playing the day after launch and didn't touch beta. There just seems to be a frantic feel to the gameplay that I haven't felt in years in other fps I've played, and I like it. I have some doubts about the longevity, unless they put out a few more game modes, but I'm having a ball for now. Oh, and last night was the first time I'd heard anyone in voice chat for the game.

The game is a lot of fun. I'll play several matches each night. I still kinda suck, but I have improved. The balance is fairly good, with only a few tweaks needed most likely. It'll be interesting to see what kind of longevity it has.

Glad to hear the banhammer in use is indeed a heavy one.

Been enjoying the heck out of this since release, even though I apparently use the worst person in the game (D.VA). I'm always one to root for the underdog, especially when said underdog is a mecha-waifu.

9 million people played the open beta, but only 7 million bought it. I had it pre-ordered and didn't cancel because open beta was fun. Once they reset the MMRs and started feeding everyone to the suddenly MMR-less "pro" streamer/gamer crowd the honeymoon from open beta died off fast after launch for anyone new to the game. It was stomp, stomp, stompity, stomp time for those poor sods.

Many people on my friends list stopped playing much, if at all and it's barely been a week and a half since launch citing the busted matchmaker, imbalances, lag and getting crap for cosmetics unless they shelled out for RNG boxes from the microtransaction shop.

As an FYI, the bought RNG boxes seem to have a lot better chance of getting decent stuff than the ones you get from leveling up playing the game. The game you paid either $40-60 USD for and is online only and promised launch features are still missing over a week after launch. Go figure.

I wonder what they are using to identify users? The same thing that lets Windows 10 create some kind of unique ID based off of your PC components? Either way, I'm glad the cheaters are shown the door. I wonder if there's anything in the EULA that says you are permanently banned, even if you buy more copies of the game.

More likely something in a ToS you have to agree to in order to play online. I believe those hold a lot more legal weight than an EULA.
