Overwatch Launch Details

The official simultaneous worldwide launch of Overwatch is tomorrow, but that is as early as this afternoon in some territories. This post on Battle.net has the details on when to expect the release, which will be at 7:00 pm EDT, saying: "Similar to the Open Beta, Overwatch will launch in all gameplay regions across all platforms at the same time globally. To find out when Overwatch will be available in your region, check out the reference guide below."

I can't help but try to be excited for Overwatch but fail to. The mechanics seem overly simple and catoony. I'd like to love it but... I've not tried the Beta so I don't have a good basis for my opinions, just what I watch on YouTube gameplay videos.

I hope you understand just how wrong and damaging this type of thinking is (about any subject)~ You want something to fail because you dislike the game (company?) without even playing it?

I went in not expecting much at all, no intention of ever buying it, but after playing the beta for a weekend I bought it. It's well balanced. It's got charm. It's just fun.

Totally agree. I can't justify $40-60 for a multiplayer only game that gives us the exact same game modes TF2 offered in 2008. It is shameful that Blizzard thinks rehashing TF2 gameplay some 8 years later justifies a "full" game.

Valve at least had the courtesy to bundle TF2 with two other amazing games with the Orange Box. And then they made TF2 free for the last 5 years.

Maybe my standards are just too high, but why are people eating up what is basically a less-featured TF2 clone? A sad state of affairs.

I'll jump in and say I do want Overwatch to fail (it will sell millions and be a huge success of course) because it is yet another example of companies delivering less content and hardly any innovation, yet they expect us to pay $40-60 for it.

Why would I want Blizzard to be rewarded for giving us game modes directly ripped from TF2? Do you want to encourage developers to stop making Single-Player campaigns and meaningful Co-op? Do you even understand they just stole their ideas from TF2, a game that has been Free-to-Play for 5 years? I played the Beta, which is the full game minus some maps. It is TF2 with less features...

Pretty sure he was saying he fails to be excited for Overwatch, not that he hopes it will fail.

TF2 did not launch with the payload mode. That was a later edition and they copied it from Wolf:ET.

...right. Payload was added in April of 2008 to TF2, about 7 months after TF2 released. But you are missing the point. The point is Overwatch is launching in 2016, in a post-TF2 world. The bar has been set WAY higher because TF2 has been out for ages.

Also...your claim about Wolf:ET also misses the point completely. The point: Overwatch's Payload mode has been done for YEARS and is STALE. Bringing up Wolf:ET doing the Jeep escort mode just makes Overwatch's lack of innovation even worse.

Why do you defend a barebones game release? I suggest we have higher standards rather than let Blizzard put out a lazy game with game modes from 2008 or earlier. So what if they have shiny and cool characters? The GAMEPLAY is what matters.

You should have said that then. Made it seem like your complaint was how similar it was to TF2 and not that you just don't like team/class based MP

The characters and their abilities are the essentially the new gameplay feature. You're focused on the mode (like zeroing in on deathmatch when games with deathmatch distinguish themselves by more than just that mode) instead of the rest of the game. It's like you're just realizing what a "genre" is and are suddenly mad about it.

NO. That isn't what I said at all. [Removed to be nicer.] I said the mode is stale because we've played it for years on end. Team/Class based MP is very fun...but I've played TF2 for years on end like millions of others.

That is why Overwatch is a big letdown IMO. If you're 13 years old and this is your first FPS, then you might find it amazing and unique. If you're experienced with team-based FPS games (Return to Wolf, Battlefields, CoD Domination, TF, TF2, CS...), Overwatch adds nothing new apart from cool art stuff.

Sepharo wrote on May 23, 2016, 23:19:

Well...ok...if you really think having different visual stuff is new. But the actual gameplay is very much the same: cap points, stand on points, push payload.

Just because I have a sword, a mech, spells, or six-shooters...to me that is mostly cosmetic...but if you feel that is enough innovation for you...fair enough.

Anyway, Overwatch will sell millions of course because Blizzard...I still maintain people should have higher standards, content-wise and gameplay-wise.

Well what do we have here, a dude with a lot to say about something he obviously hasn't tried. That much is obvious from that quote. You just cannot say the different Overwatch classes mainly just differ in cosmetics and not make a complete fool of yourself in the process. Even if you quote me on this and tell me you HAVE played Overwatch, it will be extremely hard for me to believe you.

The gameplay per class differs A LOT. It is in fact the unique selling point of Overwatch. There's, what.. 20 classes? And they all differ so much from eachother. Pressing [shift] as Soldier 76, you sprint. Pressing [shift] as Pharah, you jetback high into the air. As Junkrat, you drop a mine. As Symmetra, 1/6 turret. As Mercy, you fly towards the teammate you aim for to come to their healing resque. As Reinhardt, you charge into enemies slamming them into walls. As the Reaper, you become incorporeal for 4 seconds giving you the opportunity to either charge into fights or flee from them while being harmless and immune in the meantime.

And that's just [shift]! With the [right mouse-button] Soldier 76 shoots a bomb. Pharah hovers. Junkrat deploys a beartrap. Symmetra... Can't remember. As Mercy, you channel a DPS buff onto the teammate you aim at. Reinhardt holds before him a one-way barrier to shield himself and his allies. As the Reaper, you can teleport to a different spot within your visual, limited range.

Classes differ so much, it really makes all the difference. Please don't bullshit.

You've managed to post here for 6 years and not realize that this argument has no merit at all? I'm 30 and I'm considered young here. I've played the shit out of all of those games and they are some of my favorites within my favorite genre. I don't give a shit about the Overwatch art, it has some of the best gameplay in MP FPS ever. It's literally hero focused, if you can't see that and think they're just for being "cool" with cosmetic differences or something then you fundamentally misunderstand the game and it's no wonder you're boiling it down to "well payload has been done before". Get a clue man, and try a better argument than telling old school MP FPS players that they're impressed because they're naive, it's literally the opposite.

You're wrong. Been playing FPSes since Wolf 3D, and Overwatch is fantastic.

How about AOE shields? Time rewinds? Pudge hooks? Overwatch brings a lot of unique gameplay mechanics to the table. If you call this "cosmetic" then you're out of your fucking mind. No FPS in history has such a diverse and unique roster of characters, and that's what makes Overwatch different.

Boring lame e-sports kiddie shooter with no depth. Its basically Team Fortress 3 that has been Blizzardized.

A game for ass licking Twitch streamers and 12 year olds

Garbage

"No FPS in history has such a diverse and unique roster of characters"
WRONG. I play Battleborn and its heads and shoulders above this e-sports shit. Plus PVE play and depth.

Nice try. Thought you were a gamer?

Last Blizzard game played was original WoW for a little longer than a month in 2004... So no on the fanboy account. Lol I play/have played a lot of games. Uh, you can read my history of posts here.

Oh, I get it. Some people that went in for Battleborn are not content with the number of players at launch, or got burned by some WoW related experience. *shrug*

Regarding Battleborn, it's really a different style of FPS, though there are lots of areas for comparison. I found it to be the weaker in those areas, but hey, that's why I decided to buy one and not the other after playing them both.

I see so many unqualified comments, it's astonishing. It's a TF2 clone (like there's no game worth playing anymore that doesn't ever copy or borrow from those that have come before it)! It's Blizzard, the herald of Mammon (because there are just sooo many more gaming companies out there that are purely about the end-user~)! I played "x" and my opinion is more valid than yours about "y" (everything is relative, I guess)!

There aren't that many things to criticize Overwatch about as it is pretty well polished. Badmouthing something just based on personal opinion has always been de rigueur here, but keep it in perspective.

The only thing that matters: is it fun, do you like it? Good for you; enjoy. You don't like it? There's a shitload more games for you to play. Yay!
