Diablo III Turns Four

Battle.net notes that yesterday was the fourth anniversary of the release of Diablo III, the latest installment in their action/RPG series. There are no celebratory events planned, but they offer a little retrospective on the release:
Four years ago, we began a journey across Sanctuary that would forever alter the tide of the Eternal Conflict. In that time, millions of nephalem have stormed the gates of the High Heavens, taken down the Prime Evil, and collected more loot than a treasure goblin could hope to collect.

It’s been one hell of a journey, and we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to you for being with us every step of the way. Diablo III would not have become the game it is today without the support of our players, and we’re so thrilled to share the horrors, magic, and Legendary goodies Sanctuary has to offer with our community.

Curious, have you ever actually played something Disney made, like Kingdom Hearts?

Neither are at all Disney, you're just complaining nonsensically to complain.

Im complaining because I have a legitimate grievance with the game mechanics and its design. I presented my arguments clearly and succintly, and you replied with assertion about my motives. Heh...

Yup, Disney had dead, bleeding soldiers staked to walls and thousands of dead plague victims you need to step over.

This is why no one listens to most complaints from gamers. We even have people calling Doom 3 Disney.

I sometimes wonder if people stop and listen to how hyperbolic the things they say are. Then I realize that no, to many gamers, complaining about games is an even bigger game than playing any game.

Go and play the game, seriously. When I say Disney, I mean the whole package, I don't pick and choose like you just did. Sure there are some parts of the game where I guess at least some designers tried to fix the really horrible fairy world witches with butterfly wings shit but its too little, too late. You can't fix the really lame script, written so that 2 year olds can follow it. You can't fix the lame ass dialogue, or the really lame ass color palette. You can't fix Imperius! ETC. ETC. ETC. For every bleeding soldier in the game, I can name 10 things that will make you cringe. Go and nitpick Donald Trump's toupee or something because you are in the wrong on this one.

Yeah, don't you just wish you could censor all the people you don't agree with? Maybe even deport them, or put them on trains to somewhere where they can't make a nuisance of themselves.

Yeah I don't even want to touch on the cartoon graphics, childish story/writing/dialogue, cheesy villains and heroes, they went from a horror atmosphere to fucking Disneyworld....

How they also fucked up a huge part of the gameplay, in adition to all the basic stuff I already mentioned, namely character builds is beyond me....Seriously another of the main drives for hardcore players of this type of game is building the perfect build with the skills and items you want. But NOOOO, here are all the skills, and they are all mostly shit except the ones WE want you to play with....fucking Blizzard....

Nothing in their portfolio can ever top Diablo 1 nothing! Thank you Condor(Blizzard North) for bringing such a classic although i didn't like D2 as much.

Diablo 3 is a fecking Disney game painted with rainbow colored crayons. Nothing that was magic in D1 went over to Diablo 3. The dark atmosphere, the enemy death animations, the beautiful crisp SVGA graphics, the eerie sound scape. Nothing!

Would LOVE to see D1 just get a graphical update and re-released. Definitely the best Diablo of the 3.

Diablo 1 and 2 for me. I love both. Frak D3. Did you see this postmortem? http://www.gdcvault.com/play/1023469/Classic-Game-Postmortem OR http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VscdPA6sUkc

Sadly we'll probably never know if the original Blizzard North version of Diablo III might have topped the first Diablo.

but also must have spent upwards 300 hours.

Yeah... actually playing the game! Why is that so weird? Considerably less weird than people that played for 15-20 hours, beat it on easy, bought themselves 200 hours ahead of the loot curve just to skip ahead to T6 and then whined about "not getting drops" and quit. That's just mind numbingly stupid. You didn't even actually need sets or legendaries to play on the original T6 with a full party. You just had to keep playing until you earned the gear to get there. Why would you want to get to the last, hardest difficulty in any less time? What would be the point?

The real problem I see here is that everyone seemingly just wants to "play the endgame" (MMO syndrome) not realizing that all that time you spent getting there... was the game. When I got through T6 (once) I was completely done with the game until the expansion came out. I wasn't looking to keep playing it on T6 forever. That's literally insane.

People that traded for new gear in D2 ran into the exact same problems, except considerably sooner since there was such little content. I must have played 200+ levels (maxed out necro and wiz and a handful of alts) of some other game where collecting the loot yourself after killing something yourself was the entire point. Buying up SoJ's completely cheapened the experience in a hurry because there was no further reward.

I have diablo 3 on my PC, and i have it on my PS4...

I have maybe 100 hours into it total...

It's got no real draw for me anymore. Although I would say the console version is like it was meant to be played on a console from the beginning.

Now on the semi-same spectrum... Path of exile.. I have 700 hours and going still.

Before it was AH this, AH that, since there was zero loot based progression.

That's not really true. I played the original game into Torment 6 without ever buying anything FROM either AH. The idea that drops were tuned "around" the AH's was just another batshit fan theory. It was perfectly payable it just took time... more time than people were willing to put in. Time and impatience is what prompted people to consider AH purchases as "necessary to progression" which is just completely stupid. So... the real "problem with the AH" was if you used it you basically eliminated any actual reason to play the game and completely threw your loot distribution curve out of whack. It was perfectly playable but people who are impatient ruined their own experience bypassing literally the only reward the game has. Sure, the game needed to distribute set/unique items better, but the AH wasn't causing those problems.

If you got to Torment 6 without AH then you are not just a total outlier but also must have spent upwards 300 hours.

That's like saying torture is an acceptable holiday activity.

I care, shut your dick hole.

They killed D3 when they decided to kill all trade in the game in the PC version. Fuck that.

Maybe for you, for everyone else Diablo 3 is now at least playable and fun. Before it was AH this, AH that, since there was zero loot based progression.

Yea killing the AH was the right thing to do - they had no control over manipulation. Was anything but a "free" market.

I had about 350 hours of playtime on my vanilla wizard, and I am a firm believer that drops were tuned around using the auction house. After all of that time, most of my equipment was still yellow, and even a few blues. Wizard gear dropping with strength and no intelligence was just dumb.

The best item I ever found was http://i.imgur.com/NbfXG8Q.jpg
