Civilization VI Announced

2K Games announces Sid Meier's Civilization VI, saying a new installment in the beloved series of turn-based strategy games is coming on October 21st of this year, and that preorders are already available through the Civilization website (Sid is no longer involved in the series he pioneered, and it looks like his name may be getting smallified this time around). They offer this announcement trailer and the following details:
Sid Meier’s Civilization VI is the next entry in the award-winning Civilization franchise, which has sold in nearly 33 million units worldwide, including more than 8 million units of Civilization V.

Originally created by legendary game designer Sid Meier, Civilization is a turn-based strategy game in which you attempt to build an empire to stand the test of time. Become Ruler of the World by establishing and leading a civilization from the Stone Age to the Information Age. Wage war, conduct diplomacy, advance your culture, and go head-to-head with history’s greatest leaders as you attempt to build the greatest civilization the world has ever known.

Civilization VI offers new ways to engage with your world: cities now physically expand across the map, active research in technology and culture unlocks new potential, and competing leaders will pursue their own agendas based on their historical traits as you race for one of five ways to achieve victory in the game.

FEATURES

  • EXPANSIVE EMPIRES: See the marvels of your empire spread across the map like never before. Each city spans multiple tiles so you can custom build your cities to take full advantage of the local terrain.
  • ACTIVE RESEARCH: Unlock boosts that speed your civilization’s progress through history. To advance more quickly, use your units to actively explore, develop your environment, and discover new cultures.
  • DYNAMIC DIPLOMACY: Interactions with other civilizations change over the course of the game, from primitive first interactions where conflict is a fact of life, to late game alliances and negotiations.
  • COMBINED ARMS: Expanding on the “one unit per tile” design, support units can now be embedded with other units, like anti-tank support with infantry, or a warrior with settlers. Similar units can also be combined to form powerful “Corps” units.
  • ENHANCED MULTIPLAYER: In addition to traditional multiplayer modes, cooperate and compete with your friends in a wide variety of situations all designed to be easily completed in a single session.
  • A CIV FOR ALL PLAYERS: Civilization VI provides veteran players new ways to build and tune their civilization for the greatest chance of success. New tutorial systems introduce new players to the underlying concepts so they can easily get started.

New Civ game prep check list:

1. Strip out most of the things we added in the DLC for the last Civ game - CHECK

2. Graphic Revamp (not necessarily an improvement) - CHECK

3. Add a small handful of features players asked for as a patch/DLC in the last version of the game - CHECK

4. Strip out most of the gameplay elements that require a brain, to draw in a bigger non-4x group of gamers to help increase the number of copies sold - CHECK

5. Sell refurbished and neutered game as a new title for full price, followed by at least 2 high priced DLC giving players back the features they are already used to having in a Civ game - CHECK

As others have mentioned, it is annoying how each new version is a step back in features until the expansions.

That being said, I like some of the ideas. The combined arms is interesting. I am curious to see what they do with multiplayer. We start games but often never finish them, at least with my semi-casual gamer group of friends.

This graphic overhaul is going to be controversial, but I actually like the simplified cartoony look. I think it brings clarity to elements on the map. I am going purely by the two screenshots though.

Yeah, I'm not keen on how they gut the games now only to sell DLC. For the first time I'll be waiting for a year or two on this one.

Heh. Came here to say the same thing. V didn't get really good until Gods and Kings.

4 is the ultimate refinement of Sid's original design. 5 is awesome though. Have you played it? I love the city-state mechanic for example. Also, religion.

Don't you mean they missed that opportunity with 5? CiV

I guess with 6 it would be CiVIlization.

Yup.

Spoilers for the end of Civ 6: Sean Bean dies.

Also, in case you're wondering what that epic music is, it's John Murphy's transcendent theme to the movie Sunshine.

Unless they fix the neutered multiplayer implementation that they had in V, I won't be touching this game. As far as MP went, V was a monumental step back from IV. And their excuse for that implementation in V was simply that less than 5% (? or maybe 10?) of their player base plays multiplayer so it wasn't a focus - which doesn't bode well for VI.

Of course, it's a chicken and egg problem... of course no one will play MP if the MP is poor.

I don't even use the complexity. I do nothing in the city screens. Nothing. I can make an Elvis? Great, so what?

Only one unit per tile of V was a complete deal breaker for me. Capturing a city was about bringing a constant stream of single units rather than attacking it with large forces. It wasn't fun. It looks like they improved that a bit, but I don't feel like it'll be enough.
