On the heels of Hearthstone®: Heroes of Warcraft™ surpassing 50 million registered players,† Whispers of the Old Gods™, the third expansion for Blizzard Entertainment’s award-winning online strategy card game, is now live. Starting today, players around the world are invited to collect and do battle with 134 new twisted, tentacle-packed cards—including the legendary Old Gods themselves: C’Thun, N’Zoth, Yogg-Saron, and Y’Shaarj.
This spine-tingling expansion turns everything players know about Hearthstone inside out. Familiar allies have been corrupted, new monstrosities have appeared, and the Old Gods of Azeroth have resurfaced—spreading their sinister influence and game-changing powers throughout the tavern.
“Whispers of the Old Gods adds an exciting new set of creepy, corrupted cards to Hearthstone,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. “We can’t wait to see how creative players are with the ancient evil of the Old Gods in their hands.”
C’Thun is especially eager to lend its awesome power to denizens of the tavern—players will receive this legendary Old God and two Beckoner of Evil cards when they open their first Whispers of the Old Gods card pack. Also, in celebration of the launch, everyone who logs in to Hearthstone will receive three Whispers of the Old Gods card packs free (for a limited time).

Blizzard looting the tomb of H. P. Lovecraft for a dime - how the mighty have fallen.
You do remember C'Thun being in vanilla WoW right? Like the over 10 year old version of WoW?
I see it more as a homage. Like with Cthulhu Saves the World.
Well, it is an homage but also the profitable use of Lovecraft's work. This is coming from a company that just took down a beloved vanilla WoW server because of copyright infringement/unallowed use of ActiBlizz's work. I know there is no copyright anymore on Lovecraft's work, but I still find it part amusing, part annoying. Whatever. I never played WoW because of the monthly fees, so I did not know about C'thulhu/C'Thun being a part of it. Nevertheless, what are 10 years compared to the 80 to 90 years since Lovecraft invented his mythology.

I'm giving this a try, first time playing the game. How do I get the 3 free packs from expansion? I'm playing some of the practice stuff and tutorial

Or you know free if you just play the game. In between expansion releases I always manage to accumulate north of 6k gold (6880 this release) playing quite casually. I even took a 2 month break in there and didn't play at all. Add to that the amount of dust I accumulate and it's not really that bad. For people new to the game, yes the hill is steep but with Standard out it's at least a bit more manageable now (though still a long way).
