My Vive showed up today. Gave me fits getting it set up on my secondary machine. Long story short, just because the valve test says your system cuts it...don't get TOO close to that line. I was on a 3.6 ghz AMD chip, it does NOT do the job. Switched to my main rig, which has my other 970 (I killed my SLI for the second machine). The only difference is a newer mobo and a 4ghz i7. Butter smooth.

VR eats a LOT of CPU time. Be prepared.

Also, The Lab is currently the best thing to show your friends on it so far. It's graphically MILES above everything else, and looks utterly convincing in some areas. And it's free!

I only have a 2.2m X 2.7m area to play in, and the Chaperone pops up a LOT. It's unfortunate, and I wish there was a way to lower the distance it reacts at. Yes, it's somewhat low-Rez, but nowhere near as bad as I assumed it was going to be. Peripheral vision is unfortunately blurry, but you get used to looking straight ahead.

All in all, I'm thrilled with it, aside from not running right on my intended rig for it.

The Vive looks like the better headset but I'm a bit concerned about this room-space stuff. I'd rather stay seated if possible so I hope this is optional.

Technically it's a game design choice, not a hardware choice*. But the launch games for it are all of the get up and move variety.

* Purely IMHO, as I haven't seen data to back it up, but I don't think sitting down is great for the lighthouse units either. Both are meant to see the headset

The lighthouse units do fine sitting or standing (as long as one of them has a view of the headset). One of my Lighthouses failed, so I was stuck using a single unit for a week, which worked for non-360 degree stuff.

How do games detect the Vive/Controllers? Is it something you have to assign before start and hope the game actually works, or is it in-game?

Reason I am asking is that I would think this could become a huge issue if oculus games and vive games suddenly have mutual exclusive api... so you are always locked out of some games...

Someone already got the Oculus games (Luckys Tale and another one) working on the Vive, and apparently they work really well. Will most likely break with patching, but it seems Oculus isn't going out of their way to block it.

Both my headsets due to arrive today. Rather annoyed that the Rift took so long to ship, but the DK2 has been keeping me busy.
