It did support 3d-acceleration from the beginning and it was developed for being run on 3d-cards. I don't where you got that from but that assumption is something you just took of your arse.

They aren't claiming it's anything it's not, redux just means 'brought back' or 'revived', which is exactly what they've done.

Oh okay, so I`ve fallen for their semantic trap. Nevermind that the original announcement called it a remaster/remake.

The point is that the most of these rem..red...oh, f-it follow the line of least resistance and it`s quite sad.

Hey, if $20 is too much for you or you don't like it, just don't buy it. Is it an overinflated sense of entitlement, idiot-itis, narcissim, or what that makes someone so bitter?

Lots off huffing and puffing but zero sense, sprinkled with ye ole "don`t like it - don`t buy it" cheap-ass cop out. The reason I`m bitchin` is because I`d like to see a proper remakes of some titles but as long as the general public falls for these TV dinners it`s unlikely to happen.

They're not falling for anything, this is just the original, previously digitally unavailable game updated to work on modern OS's with some enhancements. Want a proper remake? Then buy this, enjoy it, support the developers and they'll see a demand for a full remake maybe.

There's more to a remaster than just visuals, they fixed a lot of bugs and added new features:

http://www.rebellion.co.uk/blog/2016/4/8/battlezone-98-redux-dev-blog-2

You can also see that they actually went back and made the models more complex as well, they didn't just slap new textures on them.

This isn't a complete remake, but it's a lot better than what you're saying.

Hrm, those screenshots and accompanying info paint a much better picture than the Steam store clip and pics alone. I may fall into their trap and buy yet another copy of a game I own the physical discs for.

Damn nostalgia and the convenience of the digital marketplace!

Although I admit the colors seem a litle over-bright, I like the updated features. Adding in Steam community stuff is a plus too. I thought BZ was completely under-rated at the time and I had loads of fun with it, even some of the multiplayer stuff for BZ & BZ II.

Doesn`t seem so. Fixing bugs and adding some basic gfx changes isn`t a Redux, for me at least (definitely not for 20 bucks)

But then, can you blame them? It`s what everybody else is doing and people are lapping it up, so not a big surprise.

They aren't claiming it's anything it's not, redux just means 'brought back' or 'revived', which is exactly what they've done.

Hrm...at the asking price of $20, the "graphical upgrade" looks VERY minimal. All the units are still super low-poly, and the textures are a minor improvement. It looks like maybe there's a little difference in the lighting engine.

I loved Battlezone. But this feels like they did a minor upgrade, added Steam Workshop support, and assume someone else will do the heavy visual makeover.

Unfortunately, you are completely correct. I'd say this was a half assed upgrade, but the models and textures look practically identical to the originals. Quarter assed? I'm still somewhat tempted to buy it, because BZ series was so great at the time, but I'll hold out for a well done BZ2 I think.

You sure about that or maybe it was OpenGL that was patched in later? I remember running it on my voodoo from the get go... I remember the dual plasma lance (maybe) that would black screen all other players in a game that didn't have SLI. I remember the patch for that and for higher resolutions.... But I think one of the big deals about its launch was that it ran Glide.

I remember having d3d/nvidia issue with it several years later (post glide), where the scope would render the wrong color. Think it was just an ini fix though...

That is comparing low res shots of the original to high res shots, there is where the better look comes from in this example.

Now if you compare with high res shots of original Battlezone (possible through community patches) you will see that mostly they just cranked brightness up and put some noisy textures in all round.

The models which are higher poly in redux actually mostly look worse due to having crappier even though high res textures with much less information (eg big patches of black with a few fullbright light spots instead of detail)

Basically Battlezone Redux looks more like a cheap fan made high contrast mod than a proper remaster. Hire some proper artists for f's sake if you are going to change 20€ for it...

Here is a community patch version being played to compare : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-UMyBHpAaDQ

So... it does look a lot better! But yeah, not quite modern. Honestly, I'm still tempted to pick this up. With they'd added VR support (I know that's a different project...) but maybe that'll come in a patch

Edit: Hyperlinks are the hottest trend of '98!

Actually got a copy with a 3dfx card at the time (maybe voodoo?).

I feel in some ways the makeover looks worse ?
Looking at steam store video going back and forth between the 2 comparisons it just looks like some of the new texture models have way less detail in the way of information and character to them.

Bleh, the makeover is poorly done. Higher resolution sure is nice but a choice for oldschool / newschool in the menus would be nice.

This. High resolution textures on a high res screen, combined with old low poly models makes em look fucking terrible. The Wingcommander4 high res player remake suffered from the same problem. They could have at least increased the view distance in the game, but from the videos you can see they weren't even bothered to do that.
