No Man's Sky Footage

IGN Video has a new clip with around 21 minutes of gameplay footage from No Man's Sky, the upcoming procedurally generated space game. The clip features Sean Murray of Hello Games taking us on a guided tour. Thanks Dark Horizons via Ant.

I am really on the fence about this. I'd like to see more about resource collection and how getting equipment and ship upgrades works. It certainly goes on the list of games "without a goal", but so was Minecraft and I definitely played a ton of Minecraft.

"Procedurally generated" is just SoCal BS for creating 5 biomes, 5 planet sizes, 5 planet terrains, and 5 different life form ecologies, and them randomly picking one from each pot, and spitting out a new planet.

After about 20 or so planets you will start to recognize the patterns and will soon be able to identify each permutation.

You most likely will have to spend weeks and weeks pushing out from your starting point before you encounter worlds that have been named with Beavis and Butthead flavored obscenities.

"Space Engineers" already lets you explore a nearly limitless and procedurally generated universe, and it is not exactly selling well.

No man's sky obviously puts more effort and money into hyping this game than they do trying to complete it and ship.

I wrote off Elite after picking it up, but on a whim I tried it again with a proper HOTAS / Pedal setup. It was incredible how awesome it was. With the Rift, Elite Dangerous is easily my favorite game. I can't get enough of it.

The core gameplay and systems in Elite are super solid. Flying around is just fun. In all the time I've spent, I haven't really put much effort into exploration (I'm more of a bounty hunter/space trucker/smuggler type), but the excitement of playing in Open and being active in the community offset a bit of the difficulty in finding the game underneath the sim.

And Open, with VR, has become such a fun experience because dogfighting feels so natural. Follow the target as they go above/behind you much easier, and also see blindsides coming without having to stare at the radar.

I agree with you on the lack of VR support for No Man's Sky. The devs have apparently stated that they may add it at some time in the future but it's not something they are actively working on nor do they really have plans around it. It's really non-committal. VR is a game changer for the sim genre in general, and a PERFECT fit for this game. It's mind boggling that this isn't going to support VR.

Anyway, sorry for the rant with no point. I love Elite, and I think anyone who enjoyed Starlancer and could dig the idea of a make your own adventure space sim (very firefly-like) should give it a solid shot.

The game is hard and pulls no punches, but after the initial difficulty it really blossoms

Can we have a little more purple & magenta please? I mean - fuck, mix it up some. And put some more ground clutter down, maybe some more smaller rocks or weeds. Who's their environment artist? I want to speak with him/her. "Step into my office... You're fucking fired!"

This looks like something from the late 90s.

Doesn't it depend on how sophisticated the algorithms are though? The natural world is not designed by a human's artistic mind but it's surely more beautiful than anything a human could produce.

I hate computer generated content. I truly hate it in the intense sense of the word. To me, playing a game with computer generated content/maps is like reading a computer generated book -- decades from now they will even get that right (enough), but this day and age is a long way from there.

See that monkey having fun pressing random shit on a screen? That's you, playing a game with computer generated content completely devoid of the artistic mind of a human being.

The big worry for most people is that because this is all procedurally generated, you will either very quickly run out of things to see (if they don't have enough biomes to seed from), or, and this is probably more likely, the random generation engine randomly gives you the same thing 2 or 3 times in a row, and you'll very quickly go "Oh, was that it?"

In an MMO, at least you'll know that every zone is likely unique, and was hand crafted. Here you have no such idea, and the fact that most of their videos show rather similar planets does not help.

We'll see, this could be awesome, but I'll need some massively positive word of mouth before I'll take a $60 gamble.

I'm guessing this isn't going to be a PC game but rather a console port, no support for HOTAS, most definitely no head tracking and VR support, extremely slim chance for FOV adjustment.

This does sound pretty cool, certainly more than a walking sim. I'm still not sure the survival and upgrade systems will be interesting enough to sustain the "hundreds of hours" it will take to reach the center of the universe, but we'll see.

A lot didn't watch this, I mean, it's 22 minutes and does it have new information?

But I get the "no gameplay" gripe. It's clearly an exaggeration, but the fear is you go down, find a new planet, catalog things, and then... repeat?

The devs haven't done a good job communicating what else you do. Go down, find a new planet, catalog things, go find another new planet, see some things that will be different but how different can procedurally generated actually be, and then...? How long until the novelty has worn off and you feel you've seen everything. How long until you see something that looks exactly like you've seen before? 1 planet? 10 planets?

Unanswered questions, and I've got an open mind. To me, this is a $20 game, and when it hits that I'll buy it. Maybe before, depending on reviews. I enjoy Minecraft, and got a few dozen hours out of it, but it was $9.99, and I play in spurts where I go in, mine and build, try something new, then feel like I'm repeating myself and quit. I don't really see what the "something new" to draw me back into this is.

So, I have an open mind, and am not dismissing this, but I get why others are concerned.

I preordered this about a month ago. The more I see the more I like! Watching Sean walking around and exploring stuff looks so much fun. I know it's not much gameplay for others but for me I think it looks wonderful!

Hrm, that sounds mildly interesting, still looking for some in depth reviews post-release though. Definitely going to get this on sale, just to see how it runs on my various comps, just like Elite:Dangerous.

That's the nice thing about opinions, I guess. If you've "always" thought this game has looked boring, why the fuck are you here? Why would another headline about this game interest you one bit?

As long as we're being opinionated, I think pretty much every multiplayer shooter ever made looks boring as fuck. Every RTS ever made looks boring as fuck. (Actually, I've played many of both kinds and they are, in fact, boring as fuck.) Every sidescrolling platformer... boring as fuck. Whatever. But that's MY opinion and nobody else has to give a shit.

THIS game, on the other hand, in MY opinion, looks incredibly interesting and exciting... to ME. It matches very closely the kind of game I have had in mind whenever I've thought about what kind of space exploration game I would want if I could make it myself. This, right here. And I'll be taking the week off work to play it.
