Dark Souls III Crash Workaround

A post on NeoGAF has workarounds for issues users have encountered playing Dark Souls III, including a crash to desktop that can occur when approaching bonfires. The post suggests this problem is impacting owners of NVIDIA cards below the 900 series. Thanks Steam via GameSpot.

Could never get into Dark Souls 1 and 2. I only found out about them and DS2's PC port a few months back. Simply put it felt cumbersome and terrible with the mouse and keyboard, it looked like ass, I had no idea what I was doing, and the skeletons/ghouls in the starting dungeon seemed lame. Since Im mostly a PC player, the controls felt totally wrong even when I switched to a gamepad.

I understand that people love these games because they are hard and unforgiving, but its really hard to get into one of them if you are a newbie to the genre, which is actually more "frustrating" than "fun". Does Dark Souls 3 give a more nuanced introduction to the game and its systems than its predecessors?

Patch out today fixes bonfire crash issues.

For those wondering what class to play. I'm running a Herald and it's quite fun. Starts with a 100% melee shield and a decent spear that I replaced with a longsword (Uchigatana is awesome but slow for my style, I get hit more from not out-swinging mobs than dodging to soon/late). Longsword has an awesome move set & weapon-arts.

Starts with good middling stats, a minor heal, though oddly the heal changed to an armor buff if I cast it with a cleric chime. Not sure if bug or what but hey. I had a hell of a time on the first boss as I hadn't played a DS game since the early days of DS2 so it was a rude re-introduction to the genre once again.

Man, I am loving this game...

I also started as thief, so Bandit's Knife... Which was a pain on the first boss with my puny non-upgraded hits.. Took a few tries, then one shot the next two, had trouble with a few others... Basically, it's a Souls game ; )

Also running amazing out of the gate... My recently purchases system (with 980 Ti) runs it at 60, with everything set to max, then a few things set lower (like shadows... Still on, because that looks good, but Low vs High doesn't change anything, especially with movement)... Oh, my bad... Meant that at 4k resolution... I'm sure it runs all max at 1080p for 980 or Ti.

And yes, it does 'feel' more like DS1, but that's mostly because of all the returning stuff... It's a good meshing of DS1/2 and BB... : )

Knight and Warrior look like the easiest starting classes. Warrior if you already know you'll go STR. I found un-equipping my shield and using the special LT moves pretty cool. Also gets your encumbrance down a bit so that rolls are more responsive. May have to go back to shield for some of the upcoming content. Nice having all sorts of options/approaches.

Spells are a bit weak at the start.
You can't really go wrong with the Knight as a starting character.
And you can find a longbow almost immediately after the main starting 'hub' area.

But the game definitely seems more melee biased than its predecessors.
At least at the start.

For the camera issues, have a look at your settings and try out different lock on settings. You might find something other than the default works for you. (Personally I turned off all the auto lock ons and just left it for me to do manually)

Anyone have issues with the way the camera works? I find it to be a bit wonky, it likes to jump around in combat and that drives me nuts. I just want it to stay in one place.

Whats the best class to play as? I tired the Thief, but I find them to squishy. Is there a ranges type char besides the Mage? Are mages worth a damn?

Glad I got the PS4 version this go around.

My youngest seems to get the new hottest games. For some reason we are blessed with excellent pc's. So i read the crash and burn reports online, I lean over and ask him "How's thing going?". Good. "Any crashes? How about around fires?" No crashes. "Performance?" Good, I had to drop two settings and it runs great. "How's the game?" It's more like DS1 and it's pretty tough, but it's good. "Carry on."

It pretty much goes like this with almost every game where there seems to be some outrage. I'm pretty confident our systems are pretty standard (Intel/NV), they are fairly clean due to practices and browser protection settings. Point is, sure there are some issues and some will have them, but a few voices can sound like the whole lot sometimes. OR we just have blessed PC's. I look forward to playing his copy (best part as dad) in the future.

The end.

Playing on a 770 GTX here, I crash every time I approach a bonfire unless my lighting is set to 'low'. With or without latest drivers.

I'm playing on a GTX 760 without issues or crashes. That said, I'm not using the latest drivers, so it might have something to do with that.
