He kinda reminds me of George Lucas. He made good films when he didn't have a huge reputation and ego and the people around him could tell him when he was making a mistake. Creative types need freedom but they also need to be criticise-able.

Or, conversely, there's less damage for the one crazy guy to do, and less friction involved with simply humoring the crazy guy.
