Tribes Ascend Status Report

The surprising return of Tribes: Ascend on PC Gamer is a look at Tribes: Ascend, and efforts by Hi-Rez Studios to revitalize their online shooter that started with the release late last year of an "out of the blue" update that added new content and removed all pay-to-win elements. The article features comments from Sean McBride who discusses the history of this Starsiege TRIBES remake, and why some things turned out as they did. He also outlines their motivations, expressing love for the franchise and a desire to leave the game in a better state, even if it's not something that's going to make them any money. Here's word on where things stand:
Although Tribes devotees may feel that their game was put aside in favour of Smite, the MOBA’s success is what has allowed Hi-Rez to re-establish a small Tribes development team. “We had enough manpower and enough resources,” McBride says. “We’re, like, 225 people now—we could spare a few.”

Given the small size of the new team, I ask McBride if they ever considered making a simpler, subtler update—a set of fixes rather than a major overhaul. “I felt that if we didn’t do something fundamental and big then we wouldn’t have players come back,” he says. “Let’s really embrace the fact that it’s going to be different now and draw players back with that. Ultimately I felt like players would be bored if it was totally the same game with some new maps and balance changes.”

There’s a performative aspect to this decision too—the scope of the changes is a way of building lines of communication with the community. “It set the stage, right?” McBride says. “This is how big of a change we’re willing to make to the game, so come back, talk about it, give us other ideas, you know?”

I have thousands of hours in this game but haven't spent much time with the revitalization. Too many other games to play. Kudos to Hi-Rez for their course correction. It's too bad they didn't do this 2 or 3 years ago when it still had tens of thousands of players though.

Ive been a player since the beta. I dont recall ever seeing that many players. Hundreds yes, tens of thousands? nah.

Not concurrently, although around 2011-2012 it did have 2-3000 concurrent: http://steamcharts.com/app/17080#All

And that was just on Steam. If you looked at total player counts, the community was pretty healthy. Unfortunately, HR's crappy monetization scheme hurt the game quite a bit and they were more concerned about developing Smite than fixing T:A.

Spin to win!

I love my spinfusor.

I really HATE HATE HATE how they changed the system so I cannot have a spinfusor AND a spare spinfusor at the same time. WTF are you doing Low-Rez?
Now we donce.

They both look slow and clumsy compared to T1.
T3 really was promising in its beta phase, but then at release they decided to slow it down massively. What a failure.

Midair so far has the speed and control feel of Tribes 2, and by T3 you mean Tribes Vengeance, that was a failure from conception and from the developers who made it. I was in from ALPHA to release and raised so many flag about the avenue that they took, but that's for another debate it was a reason they only sold (not pirated) around 47,000 copies of that game.

If you're looking for a true tribes spiritual successor then you should check out MidAir, a game that just got steam green lighted and is made by members of the Tribes community. it looks very promising if you are a vet. T1/T2 player.

I have given up on waiting for BIS to come back to their senses and do a real ArmA 2 successor.

The renewed interest probably DDOSed the one server they had running this in the basement.

The removal of F2P certainly has me interested. But as an original T1/T2 player, from what I recall of the TA maps they all seemed to be generally circular, with just one "something interesting" in the middle, vs. the old games maps that actually had two proper bases, distances between them interesting buildings inbetween, and so on. I guess more team deathmatch-y, than CTFy. And that wasn't very exciting for long.

(edit) Not great so far. The game is seemignly stuck at "Connecting to Authentication Servers" and attempting to login to my existing account on their website just presents a neverending login loop with no failure or errors.

Much props to them for going back and trying to fix a (by now) pretty old game.

Thanks Hi-Rez.

its ok... they had a problem for the longest time (up until this last "big new" update), where mid-air shots would not actually seem to connect visually, for some reason - it was always so disorienting because you could never tell until you hear that "ca-ching" noise

plus the skiing was quite a bit slower before as well

Say what you want, but taken on its own merits and not compared to past Tribes games, Ascend was/is a solid game. The game is still free with all content unlocked. Have at it if you've never tried it, you night be surprised at how good it is.
