MS on Win10 App Openness

Microsoft discussed plans for Windows 10 app access at a Build conference today reports SFGate, taking direct aim at recent criticism by Epic's Tim Sweeney of the closed nature of the Windows Universal Platform (thanks MajorD). They stress a commitment to openness with plans for an app converter, mod support, and the ability to sell games on other platforms. Here's word:

First off, Microsoft's Kevin Gallo announced a new desktop app converter that will make it super-simple for developers of old-school Windows apps to modernize their software with UWP so they can be listed in the Windows Store app market. Gallo says that there are over 16 million pieces of Windows software that are eligible to work with the tool.

To more directly counter concerns aired earlier this month by the CEO of Epic Games, Xbox boss Phil Spencer took the stage. Spencer stressed that Microsoft UWP is an open platform, where developers can build and sell their Windows UWP apps and games on any store they want, including the mega-popular Steam digital games store and social network.

Furthermore, Spencer said that this year, games and apps on the Windows Store will get the ability to run fan-made modifications and overlays, which is a huge piece of the PC gaming scene and one of the platform's biggest shortcomings. They'll also get advanced graphics options like G-Sync and Freesync, loved by hardcore PC gamers.

Sigh, I hate when people try to bring this up as a counter argument.

Yes, we know we don't actually OWN the software, of course we don't, no one actually thinks they do. All we want is access to it whenever we want, and the ability to do with it whatever we want-THAT'S what a paying for a license should allow us to do so, but company's treat their customers like criminals, even though it makes no bloody difference in the end.

I'm not sure what you're expecting here. You cherry picked a single sentence out of context.

Even if I decided to play ball, your demands about software licensing aren't exactly realistic. In fact most software licensing does not operate the way you describe. With that in mind I'm not sure why you think pointing out the standard is in any way a bad "counter argument".
