Star Citizen Passes $110M

The Stretch Goals page on the Roberts Space Industries website now shows that Cloud Imperium has collected over $110 million in crowdfunding to develop Star Citizen. The site long ago stopped listing further stretch goals for this space exploration and combat game, so it's not stated if any additional features or content are being added with the $45 million dollars raised since passing their last stated goal. Thanks DSOGaming.

I know. That was the comparison. Rockstar doesn't use off-the-shelf game engines to create their AAA titles. They create their own from scratch. They do that because they know the scope of game they wish to create. Chris has admitted in numerous interviews that he did not know the scope of Star Citizen and only increased its scope based on the money coming in. That's the difference between the Rockstars, CD Projekt Reds and Bethesdas of the world... and CIG.

With the scale of what they're trying to do vs any other cry engine game, I bet a fair chunk of the budget is going towards engine modification, however.

Definitely. Even if CIG by some miracle was able to modify CryEngine to achieve all their goals they will NEVER recoup their costs because they are not going to make additional games with it, and I don't believe they would ever be able to license it because most of foundation is owned by CryTek. This is precisely why Rockstar, CD Projekt Red, iD, Bethesda and other development studios thrive. They spend a large sum developing their own engines for specific needs, and then reuse those engines many times over for future games. They also license the engine out to other studios or other studios within their family of companies.

Ugh, I still have a hard time believing that Bethesda is still using the creation engine to make their games.. Here's hoping they actually put their profits from TESV/FO4 to good use and make a fucking decent in-house engine finally. Creation needs to be put out to pasture. Rockstar has been doing it right for a loooooong time, and CDP Red is on point as well.

Using Rockstar games any kind of comparison to Chris Roberts and Star Citizen is so wrong.

Before GTA IV, Rockstar used the Rage engine for their game - Rockstar Table Tennis - they done this to learn just like now they learned more about making open world sandbox games when they done Red Dead Redemption, and more about third person shooters when they made Max Payne 3. They also improved their character models with what they had learned form L.A. Noir.

Chris Roberts loves PC gaming so much he fucked off for over a decade to make films in Hollywood, which is what he would rather be doing but they know that he has no talent and is a sham.

Please don't use Rockstar Games, who have made some of the best, most inovative games of all time, and Chris Roberts who is so out of touch with current gaming it's not funny, togeather.

What Chris and his crew are good at is moneytising nostalga/dreams.

It's an unfinished, pre-pay to win mess.

Still Chris gets to play director again with Hollywood talent (and his wife) all on nerd money.

To put the amount of money they have for the development for this game in perspective, GTA IV cost a little over 100 million to make back in 2007 (a record at the time for the most expensive game development cost), with a significantly older engine and lower fidelity than what is being aimed for in SC. Not to mention the difference in scope between the two titles.

To put things even more in perspective, Rockstar didn't use the Unity engine to create GTA4. They built their own engine from the beginning to handle their specific needs. The RAGE engine went on to power nearly a dozen games including GTA5. So Rockstar got their money back multiple times over for engine development costs.

Fair point. Much of the development cost for GTA IV was the very impressive engine. Star Citizen is using a modified Cry Engine and not Unity though. With the scale of what they're trying to do vs any other cry engine game, I bet a fair chunk of the budget is going towards engine modification, however.

I have serious doubts that they will even pull off 1/10 of what they are shooting for, but I only invested $35 on this dream during the initial kickstarter. Those who invested much much more obviously have a lot more to lose here than what I was willing to risk. The alpha is coming together okay, but with the fidelity of the areas I've seen in this game so far I don't think they will go very far before funding starts to become a serious hinderance to further development. Hoping Squadron 42 comes out of it, at least. I'll consider it $35 well spent if that's even half-way decent.

$100 million would be a long time for many sensible studios. This one? Not so much the way they are throwing it away (such as the sub studios/offices they opened in other locations, and then closed again), or the expensive voice acting, etc.

They're doing it for the fidelatay and immershuns. You just don't know!

I don't give a flying fuck how long it takes for them to belt out a "finished" product. Just because they have 100 million really only means that they have a long time to work on creating something excellent. And from this early alpha - I'd say they're doing fine.

Have you guys even played the most recent alpha? I had more fun in that in 60 minutes than 20 hours of Elite. But, it was mostly due to my time sneaking onto people's vanity boats. I was cynical (not as cynical as the Internetz) but some of the super ships are definitely prime for nerd ejaculate; a bukkake symphony of PC geekdom.

I don't give a flying fuck how long it takes for them to belt out a "finished" product. Just because they have 100 million really only means that they have a long time to work on creating something excellent. And from this early alpha - I'd say they're doing fine.

It's getting better...but still not really playable. I did one of the EVA missions, but my ship freaked out on me when I tried to get back inside. It started spinning when I bumped into it...then I started spinning...then the universe exploded resulting in a crash to desktop.

I guess that means I won.

Elite is awesome. Quiet your filthy mouth.

SC is showing steady but slow progress. I feel pretty safe in saying they'll run out of money before 10 systems complete, despite a promised 100. But it'll be fun for what it is. And they'll probably have to heavily instance it to prevent lag. I feel they'll have to get SQ42 out, since they paid for all those hi-falutin' actors.

The real name of this game should be "Crowd Funder Deluxe."

They could totally make a game out of that, in the vein of "game development tycoon".

You've run out of funds this month! Do you:

A) Create another vanity ship and charge $500

B) Start an argument with Drek Smert, in hopes of you wanking each other off for attention

C) Offer a "sale" on existing items and insurance

D) Take the remaining money and disappear into the Caribbean with your actress wife
