Tom Clancy's The Division Released

Ubisoft announces the release of Tom Clancy's The Division, calling it an open-world action/RPG this time, and saying it should now be available for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. This post on the game's official website covers what to expect from a day one patch with a list of changes since the open beta. There's a post about the release on the UbiBlog that features the previously released launch trailer, and the following details:
Have you been itching to take to the streets and restore order to an epidemic-ravaged Manhattan? The Division is ready for you, and you can now explore its online open world on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Casting you as an elite sleeper Agent equipped with realistic weapons and futuristic tactical gear, The Division invites you to match wits with deadly roving gangs and other players while you fight to reclaim New York from chaos.

An action-RPG, The Division gives you not just the chance to freely roam Manhattan with up to three other players, but to customize your Agent to suit your play style and/or preferred role on the team. You’ll also encounter other teams in the quarantined Dark Zone, where – amid battling other threats – you’ll have the choice of working together or turning on other Agents for a chance at snagging rare weapons and equipment for yourself.

The Division arrives alongside its companion book, The Division: New York Collapse, which takes the form of a survival guide filled with scribbled notes and removable clues left by a survivor as she investigated the mystery behind the pandemic. To see excerpts from The Division: New York Collapse, take a look at our previous coverage.

Thank god someone here mentioned the term "bullet sponge". Somehow I didn't realize that this game is more like an MMORPG. Then someone on Steam Reviews mentioned it was basically Destiny. Saved me good money.

Yep, the bullet sponge completely ruins the combat and therefore the game. It just feels so wrong using a realistic gun and unloading into a seemingly regular person in regular clothes and their body doesn't even react let alone do any realistic damage. You'd expect someone to be knocked about and more likely get pretty f'd up like Peter Weller if you gave them a spray from an assault rifle. But they just play a running animation and hide somewhere else lol.

At least in a futuristic sci-fi setting bullet sponges make some sense. Shields, aliens, energy weapons etc. But when one bullet does the same damage as throwing a tennis ball at someone it's pretty silly, and just makes the gun play feel awful.

The way it is now I think I'd have more fun playing Tom Clancy's Long Division on pen and paper.

You have to stick with it until at least level 15 to start to see your character build come together, which is probably at least around 8 hours. Anything less than that and you've only demoed the game, not actually played it.

If you want, you can focus on pure offensive power and do enough damage to take out most enemies in one small burst or single headshot from a sniper rifle, and only bosses will slow you down. That's probably the best thing to do if you're playing solo. You have to make sure you're stacking the Firearms stat on your gear, every point of that is +1% bonus damage, when I hit level 15 I had about +350%. But you need to be skilled enough to make your shots count and make good use of cover because you're going to be squishy.

Not paying attention to what stats you are using is probably a big reason why people feel ineffective in combat. You'll switch to whatever gear items have the highest armor rating because that's the only number it shows on the quick view (flaw in the game, they could easily show small numbers instead of just green/red arrows), but then you find out you had all your points in health and skill power, which is why it takes so many bullets to kill someone. You only want skill power if you're trying to be a good healer or to make better use of gadgets like the sticky bomb and turret.

Nice graphics when it works. Crappy, boring gameplay.

How does the end game work? Does it have raiding? Do you have to do the Dark Zone to get the best gear? If no raiding and Dark Zone isn't what I want to do...how else would I get the best gear in the game?

Would I even want the best gear in the game if there is no raiding and I'm not into the Dark Zone? I just cant put together what the end game is for PvE.

I love gear treadmills but I'm not sure how that works in this one...for PvE.

Challenge mode on missions (3rd, hardest difficulty), which is rotated so often. Also, "Incursions" whatever those are, are coming (considered "end game" by the devs).

Challenge mode gives a guaranteed yellow reward so I'm guessing it must be pretty damn hard.

So one thing I wasn't clear on, is this ONLY happening in New York/Brooklyn? Rest of the world is a-ok? They didn't make that very clear, but that's the impression I got. Doesn't make sense, though, if that's the case. That'd mean the rest of the US gave up on Manhattan and just left it to this small Division group instead of an army. Actually, I recall seeing other dots on the intro map in other cities. Now I'm unsure.

Wish there were more explosions. Looks great though. Hoping to play a bit more tonight since the servers couldn't handle it last night.

It hints very briefly with a world map with many 'red dots' active like New York, and also mentions (again briefly) that it isn't just New York.

Don't think Borderlands. Borderlands is just Doom co-op, or even Serious Sam Co-op.

You HAVE to pay attention to the baddies, as the AI is impressive. They will charge, flank, retreat, use cover even on different altitudes, it really is impressive. I've had to throw a grenade at baddies and then suppress them with fire so they don't get out of the blast radius.

I'm trying not to come across like a fanboi, but after Ubisoft's formula that's used in Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, The Crew, Watch Dogs, they finally got it right and actually have a GOOD fresh game.
Granted it's online only, but I rather enjoy it as I can go do stuff solo or join up with people (friends/strangers/whoever) and go have fun and do things at my pace.
I'm pretty much now where I was in both Beta's (except have all 3 wings unlocked now), but the perk/ability/crafting system really do more to make this a RPG then say Borderlands.

I agree, don't think borderlands... borderlands is fun

But seriously, i can see why some people may like it but it just felt really repetitive and boring to me - even the PVP zone felt lifeless which forced grouping and predictable gameplay (plus most red's were done so by accident, and got zerged quick smart). The cover system was /yawn, the AI had too much health, the guns felt off (made worse by their sound fx that made them sound like pea shooters), progression and endgame APPEARED to be a never ending search for better loot so you could try and outscale AI HP's scaling.

/shrug

Graphics were quite nice though! And co-op worked a treat.

Not hating, just not my type of game i guess... as i also found the GOW series to be terribly boring as well.

Seems lots of people are enjoying it though which is good to hear.

Lol! So typically Ubisoft.

Diablo 3 had a horrible launch and it wasn't Ubisoft. Most games locked to online DRM do.

More hate mongering going on as usual. This was something that occurred last night for about 30 to 40 mins. after that the game has been nothing but stable. Same old bullshit of people trying to beat the drums of hate.

Wow, dam, I was just pointing out that MOST online games have open day launch jitters, even the mighty, untouchable fanbois machine called Blizzard (D3).

In regards to the Game itself, The Division, I actually just sent out an email to a group of friends to see if there was any coop interest, so I am interested in it, not hating.

Touchy board as usual...

And by the way, the black screen and crashing is related to Nvidias newest driver. Dont blame the game for something Nvidia fucked up.

I avoided updating drivers because of the problems I heard about yesterday, but I still got the black screen a couple times on older drivers, 342.00 I believe. Updating to the newest ones from today fixed it for me.

How could anyone not see that coming from the beta. How can anyone fail to grasp something this simple? Every Ubisoft game is the same game. It's the exact same formula every time. There's a small main story to be played out and everything else is just needless grind. For $10 or less I don't have a problem with that. For $60 US plus? Heh, suck my balls.

Why did that video trailer just tell me it was a huge hype piece of shit? (that was my impression, i fucking hate shit strung together trailers)

Think Borderlands but in third person with reality based setting and authentic looking weapons.

It's not an MMO, it's very light RPG. You don't have to choose a character class and stick with it the whole game, you can respec your skills at any time.

There's PvP in the game but there's no game winning event, you can team up with three other players or go solo and take on NPC's as well as other players in a sectioned off area on the map called the "Dark Zone". Gear you find in this mode has to be extracted before you can keep it. At the extraction zone a helicopter is called in and you attach a bag onto a drop line, other players can kill you and pick up your loot.
