WW1 Battlefield 5 in October? [Updated]

German Swiss e-tailer World of Games now has a listing for Battlefield 5, which, if accurate, reveals a World War I setting for the next installment in the military shooter series. They call it a "Mehrspieler Taktik Shooter im 1. Weltkrieg," which in English is "Multiplayer tactical shooter in WW1," and list an October 26, 2016 release date. If that post ends up disappearing, NeoGAF has it preserved for posterity. Thanks PCGamesN, who point out that dates leaked in such a manner are often wrong, but the included of game details carry a certain degree of credibility. Update: While we expected this listing to be quickly removed, this remains at the end of the day, but the description has been edited to remove the reference to World War I, as it now just reads: "Mehrspieler Taktik Shooter."

I for one don't mind the changes.
Getting pretty tired of the futuristic shooter theme.

Given this game being BF I am sure we will get the title screen for the $59.99 price and everything else will be DLC

True that. I would only buy the Premium edition for sub $20 years down the line but EA can still shove their $60 + $50 ripoff model where it's dark and brown. Luckily, with this retarded setting, I will never even have to think about it.

Re the setting, I wouldn't have minded a BF2143, a return to WW2, Vietnam or just another modern one (because why not?).

But WW1? Fook that shite properly. What a bore. WW1 were the trench wars. First down and 10 in the morning, then fourth down and 9 in the evening. Yippie! A whole yard in a day!

The weapons were crap and clunky, low rate of fire, breaking all the time, overheating, jamming, long reload times etc.
Air combat sucked with the flying lawnmowers that gained altitude at a max rate of 1ft/h and tanks were about as mobile as a 90 year old granny.

TL;DR WW1 iz azz

Yeah I'm with CJ, WW1 as a setting is too fucking depressing and doesn't really suit the usual Battlefield experience. Trench grinder wars sounds like it would put me to sleep. No way I'm digging into my wallet for $60+$60+60 or whatever nonsense they've dreamed up to monetize.

Not even our resident PR shill could paint this one in a good light. I hope the rumor is false.

World War 1 has never really been done all that well in a video game. It sounds cool until you realize it was mostly trench warfare and aircraft and tanks played vastly different roles. All the same I am ready for a theme change be it alt history, other war theaters (WWI or Korea), or future (sequel for 2142).

Whack-a-mole while drowning in mud? Not a good idea for 'fun'.

Fuck battlefield anyway :p 2143 or bust at this point, right?

In an unrelated semi-related note there was a NOVA recently that showed they are still uncovering tunnels filled with explosives dug from one side under the trenches of the other side. WW1 was a complete atrocity on all levels.

Could be a red herring, unveiling BF2143 in a "HAHAHAHA we GOT you!" reveal. Fans have been requesting a follow up to 2142 for a while now and it seems to me there was a small call back to 2142 in one of the last BF4 expansions.

I would believe this over an actual WW1 Battlefield 5 announcement. WW1 has never been popular with The Kids.

WWI flight sims? The best. No lock-on, fire-and-forget, and unforgiving physics that make wing sheer, or even just crashing into the ground, something you need to constantly take into account.

WWI infantry? The worst. Weapons are dull, regardless of how else you spruce it up.

Doom taught us all that you need weapons that go boom in a good FPS.

All those things were in WW2 as well. People, people, don't pretend that one war was somehow more or less unpleasant. If there was an honest WW1 or WW2 FPS game, depicting both sides, I suspect grown gamers would get virtual PTSD. Hardly any shooty shoot bang bang MP FPS game lets you experience the 'reality' of it - instead replaced with a caricature and "fun."

I can see it now. 'Dig 50 mile of trenches to unlock the dysentery cure skill!' 'Spend long boring weeks in the trenches punctuated by several minutes of sheer horror as one side futilely charges the other only to be slaughtered en mass!'

WW1 was such a shining example of just how stupid mankind can is. Why on earth would anyone find a meat-grinder like this fun?

Me thinks this is premature April first kind of thing.

Trench warfare and sniper / artillery duels sounds like a horrible game experience right there. Heck, it would be a game made for campers, literally. And 99% of the battles would involve trenches.. so yay.

WW1 did have some mobility to its battles. The beginning and ending months of WW1 was pretty much mobile warfare, the battle of Verdun, that started 100 years ago, was also very mobile on its early days.

Not defending DICE, I'm just a avid WW1 grognard. Look to the game Verdun to see WW1 well made and compelling. I don't believe DICE could do WW1 any justice. As it was said, it was perhaps the most depressing and stupid war of modern times, perhaps of the whole history of mankind.

Those who wish to know more about WW1, I recommend the excellent book A World Undone or the excellent channel The Great War, which tells the weekly news of the war as it happened 100 years ago.

In the end, WW1 molded the world to what it is today more than any event in modern time. WW2 wouldn't have happened without WW1, in fact many historians postulate WW2 is the continuation of WW1, with a pause in the 1920s and 30s. And it could have been so easily prevented that it breaks the heart of anyone that reads the history of the events that unfolded during July 1914.
