WW1 Battlefield 5 in October? [Updated]

German Swiss e-tailer World of Games now has a listing for Battlefield 5, which, if accurate, reveals a World War I setting for the next installment in the military shooter series. They call it a "Mehrspieler Taktik Shooter im 1. Weltkrieg," which in English is "Multiplayer tactical shooter in WW1," and list an October 26, 2016 release date. If that post ends up disappearing, NeoGAF has it preserved for posterity. Thanks PCGamesN, who point out that dates leaked in such a manner are often wrong, but the included of game details carry a certain degree of credibility. Update: While we expected this listing to be quickly removed, this remains at the end of the day, but the description has been edited to remove the reference to World War I, as it now just reads: "Mehrspieler Taktik Shooter."

Yeah they only made one futuristic one, and that was ten years ago, so you can't be pretty tired of it at all. Fucking dumbass.

WW1 did have some mobility to its battles. The beginning and ending months of WW1 was pretty much mobile warfare, the battle of Verdun, that started 100 years ago, was also very mobile on its early days.

Not defending DICE, I'm just a avid WW1 grognard. Look to the game Verdun to see WW1 well made and compelling. I don't believe DICE could do WW1 any justice. As it was said, it was perhaps the most depressing and stupid war of modern times, perhaps of the whole history of mankind.

Those who wish to know more about WW1, I recommend the excellent book A World Undone or the excellent channel The Great War, which tells the weekly news of the war as it happened 100 years ago.

In the end, WW1 molded the world to what it is today more than any event in modern time. WW2 wouldn't have happened without WW1, in fact many historians postulate WW2 is the continuation of WW1, with a pause in the 1920s and 30s. And it could have been so easily prevented that it breaks the heart of anyone that reads the history of the events that unfolded during July 1914.

I also recommend Dan Carlin's 6 part series on the Great War: Blueprint for Armageddon. It comes in somewhere over 20 hours of listening, and it's fantastic.

Yeah I'm with CJ, WW1 as a setting is too fucking depressing and doesn't really suit the usual Battlefield experience. Trench grinder wars sounds like it would put me to sleep. No way I'm digging into my wallet for $60+$60+60 or whatever nonsense they've dreamed up to monetize.

Not even our resident PR shill could paint this one in a good light. I hope the rumor is false.

I dunno, it would pretty fun being on the end of a machine gun and mowing down about 50 charging players in 10 seconds LOL. But it would suck for them

Codename Eagle was the game that laid the foundations of the Battlefield series, and what's more it was sort of based on WW1, featuring old-style tanks, biplanes and a zeppelin.

The multiplayer was amazingly fun (and often hilarious), though it was quite buggy.

If this story is accurate, you could say that Battlefield is going back to its roots.

I think it's pretty funny that everyone finds this setting so ludicrous when the past several BF games (at least as played by 90% of the population) already pretty much ARE endless meat-grinders where you get nailed by an explosion, machine gun, or sniper rifle every 30 seconds, and then respawn 5 seconds later to go rush into the next choke-point kill-zone, haha

And don't forget Valiant Hearts as well. More of a re-telling of the history of WWI than a game, it brilliantly illustrates just how insanely stupid and horrifying it was. It'll make you misty at points. So contemplate that on the Tree of Woe.

It is a great game and a great education tool as well about WW1. The only criticism I have of it is that it paints the German as evil. The tragedy of WW1 is that there was no real evil like WW2 fascist governments and whatnot. There really was no bad side on WW1, everyone was fighting for what they believed was freedom.

I suppose if there are two evils in WW1 they would be Gavrilo Princip, the fucker that shot Franz Ferdinand and gave Austria-Hungary an excuse to invade the Balkans and start the fucking war, and god damn Conrad von Hötzendorf, who in mine and many historian's view was the sole perpetrator of the war. He was a war hungry bastard that wanted an excuse to invade Serbia, an excuse that Gavrilo gave when he killed Ferdinand. Once Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia the infernal web of alliances came into place, dragging Russia, Germany, England, France, eventually Turkey, Bulgaria, Portugal, Romania, USA, pretty much everybody into a war nobody really needed or wanted. It destroyed the world and even today it still does.

It's already been corrected, it now just says "multiplayer tactical shooter".

A Battlefield game that spanned across all major time periods would be interesting but not very feasible from a technical standpoint, very few assets could be reused ballooning the install size so something like 100gb.

A strictly WW1 focused Battlefield though wouldn't exactly be a commercial success.

LOL! Bring on the field amputation kit! The animation will first show you slapping a crying soldier across the face, then shoving a liquor bottle in his mouth, then a bit to chop down on, then you see yourself break out the hand saw! Total REEEEEEALISM!!!
With a damaged Panzer still hunting 'The Haunted Tank' and Gus out of ammo, Jeb knew there was only one option, "Slim, RAM!"
