Call of Cthulhu Next Year

Cyanide Studio and Focus Home Interactive offer some details, images, and a 2017 release window for Call of Cthulhu, basically the first news about this Lovecraft-inspired game since it was announced a couple of years ago. They also say that Cyanide Studio is now the developer on the project, which was originally to be created by Frogwares. The images show off the horrors of bad housekeeping, and the accompanying text helps us better understand their plans for the game:
H. P. Lovecraft's famously twisted universe will be coming alive on consoles and PC in 2017, in the official video game adaptation of Chaosium's pen & paper RPG Call of Cthulhu. The Cthulhu Mythos has grown to become one of the largest shared universes ever envisioned, giving birth to countless stories, novels, and even movies ever since the original publication of Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu. Today, discover the game's first screenshots, which showcase the dark, oppressive ambiance of the game's semi-open environments built in Unreal Engine 4.

Developed by seasoned studio Cyanide, Call of Cthulhu is an RPG-Investigation game with psychological horror and stealth mechanics, set in a deeply immersive world. On a mission to find the truth behind the death of an acclaimed artist and her family on a backwater island, the player will soon uncover a more disturbing truth as the Great Dreamer, Cthulhu, prepares its awakening...

"We are happy that Focus entrusted us with the development of a videogame adaptation of the legendary RPG Call of Cthulhu. As long-time fans of the license, working with longtime partner publisher Focus Home Interactive on such an original and exciting project is, once again, a privilege. We hope to offer fans the game they've long been waiting for."
Patrick Pligersdorffer - CEO of Cyanide Studio

"We are deeply honored to be partnering with Cyanide again. They've grown alongside us for the past 10 years, to become today one of the best independent developers in Europe. With titles such as Styx: Master of Shadows and the Blood Bowl series, they've proved their creativity and ability to offer strong gaming experiences in original worlds. Cyanide has been wanting to make a Call of Cthulhu adaptation for years. They now hold all the cards to create a game that will please fans of the Cthulhu mythos, as well as players eager for rich and original gaming experiences."
Cédric Lagarrigue - President of Focus Home Interactive

Call of Cthulhu will release in 2017 on consoles and PC

"Eternal Darkness" on the Gamecube is what I would consider the poster-child for demonstrating "insanity" in a video game.

Eh, the insanity effects were novel at first but quickly grew formulaic and predictable. Basically, if anything weird happened, you knew it wasn't real so the impact was completely lost.

Back on topic, I'm intrigued to see how Cyanide handles this. It doesn't look to be a standard adventure game since they mention RPG and stealth mechanics. Hopefully the stealth gameplay won't be terrible, as is typical of non-stealth games that try to include stealth.

The Eternal Darkness insanity effects were great, starting with the disconcerting tilt the camera would take as your sanity started to drop, all the way up through the big stuff like the fake console reset

how can you actually experience the insanity and all that
In Amnesia it works as you see through the eyes of your character, and you start seeing dark stuff crawling across the view, your heartbeat goes up, breathe heavily, and start crouching in fear in a corner. In Soma they introduce slightly different effects due to the storyline and what the character has become... but the principle remains the same. With their very immersive engine (audio, graphics, 1st person perspective only..) the effect is impressive.

people need to learn how to read... i said, and i quote:

because how freaked out and immersed can you really be sitting around a table with some dice and a bag of chips? - how can you actually experience the insanity and all that

i was advocating for video games as opposed to sitting at a table in a PnP session... i know its challenging for the modern person to retain attention from one sentence to another, but go ahead and try it sometime

Yeah, okay, but like most Lovecraft translations to film and games, how hard will it suck?
Actually Frictional studio made fantastic translations of Lovecraft world and atmosphere into games. Amnesia was great in this regard. Cyanide will have to top that...

And I'm just going to leave this here:

Hastur

(It's a game! say it out loud!)

and yet we murmured to each other of the King and the Pallid Mask, and midnight sounded from the misty spires in the fog-wrapped city . We spoke of Hastur and Cassilda, while outside the fog rolled against the blank window-panes as the cloud waves roll and break on the shores of Hali.

Ditto. I've got the impression Cyanide is an assembly line studio that just churns out lots of mediocre games.

If it was Frogwares still doing this I'd be more excited, since they have had a decent run with the Sherlock games while having played around with the Cthulhu Mythos twice already (The Awakened and Magrunner). I am less confident with Cyanide though. They may pull it off, but I do not think I've ever finished one of their games due to become bored with them halfway through.

Invert your mouse the opposite to what you are comfortable with and flip left and right buttons. Close enough.

Part of me really wants them to remake the ORIGINAL "Alone in the Dark" game with modern graphics.

But then the other part of me thinks "They'll just add stupid mechanics instead of just remaking it, and it will suck."

I loved the p&p game! I hope they do a decent conversion of Chaosium's rules, although I hope they go easy on the sanity hits.

The problem I see is that (at least when me and my friends played it) p&p Cthulhu required a certain amount of meta 'oh, okay, I'll look in here even though I know I'll die because my character doesn't know how stupid it is', which doesn't translate well to enjoyable gameplay on a computer/console.

but you are missing out on the other aspects of the meta game that are benefitted by this... namely - being able to experience the FPS effects of madness, disorientation, hallucinations, etc. - whereas you cant in a p&p game, because you are not your character

i think overall, a videogame is better suited to psychological horror than p&p - because how freaked out and immersed can you really be sitting around a table with some dice and a bag of chips? - how can you actually experience the insanity and all that
