Steam VR Performance Test Teases Us

Valve now offers a new SteamVR Performance Test on Steam to see if your system is up for the rigors of the upcoming virtual reality invasion. Word on the free utility is: "Check whether your system is VR Ready, and if not, whether its capabilities are bound by Graphics Card, CPU, or both." Also, there are apparently strings with references to both Half Life 3 and Half Life 2: Source 2, as noted on DSOGaming (who quite rightly point out this does not mean such games are in development). Here's word on the tool:
The SteamVR Performance Test measures your system's rendering power using a 2-minute sequence from Valves Aperture Robot Repair VR demo. After collecting the data it determines whether your system is capable of running VR content at 90fps and whether VR content can tune the visual fidelity up to the recommended level. For machines that are not VR Ready the tool can help determine whether capabilities are bound by Graphics Card, CPU, or both.

everything passes but steam says my nvidia titan card is not up to snuff...wtf? because it has only 6 gigs of memory? oh well...fuck it...

Try running it again. The first time I ran it it flagged my 780 ti, but I ran it again just now and it was green. Not a very clear benchmarking program lol.

You'll be fine.

I'll try this when I get home. I have 2 SSD's, 16GB, i7 4770 (oc 4.5Ghz), but a 780 GTX. So I'm not sure it'll be enough. I can't get any of these VR kits in 2016 anyway, so I figured I might just wait for one of those new fancy FinFET HBM2 GPUs that AMD and Nvidia are releasing soon and grab both at the same time. Still unsure how I'm going to tell my wife that that $2000 I just spent was on virtual reality. Frankly, I simply don't understand why that should irritate her. Makes perfect sense to me.

Mine did totally fine. For specs I can say I have 16GB Ram as well.

anyone tried and got results for vr ready or not, and have their specs too would be awesome.

Mine was at the top end and hovered around 110 - 120fps. GTX980, 16 gigs of memory, and an i7-4771 Haswell (3.9GHz). Download size was around 1.5ish gigs, not the full 4 gigs. Does seem rather large for what it does.

I got 120 FPS steady on GTX970, 16GB, i7-3770 3.5Ghz, Win10 so something's holding you back. Running anything else that is intensive?

Thanks ViRGE, that makes sense.

No it wouldn't.

Requiring people to sign up online for Half-Life 2, is worlds away from requiring they spend a load of money they probably either don't have or are unwilling to spend on it.

True that. Not to mention the barrier of...

- strapping bulky plastic stuff to one's head
- uncertainties with regard to one's individual ability to adapt (potential motion sickness, wearing glasses, wearing an audio headset in addition to the already massive VR set and many other concerns)
- being required to learn an all new control scheme

There's some huge obstacles beyond just the price of admission in terms of required hardware (a $1,500+ PC) and the cost of the actual VR unit.
VR might eventually carve out its niche but there is not going to be such a thing as a VR revolution (at least not until they find ways where VR glasses become the size and comfort of regular shades at about half or less the current price of admission).

They updated Steam's UI AGAIN! Jesus. I just want a list mode. I'm sorry, I own more than 10 games, scrolling through them all is bullshit. I miss the old version.

Edit: I'm sure it's awesome like win98, but no thanks.

I just updated and restarted. Same view modes for the library are still there. Click View, top three entries should be "Games Detail" "Games List" "Games Grid". Detail shows the most games in one list.

I am also going to start getting hyped with no real reason or proof that half life 3 will be announced as the Vive is released.

The internal rendering resolution is higher. It's just not being displayed at that resolution so that it doesn't fill out your screen.
