Titanfall 2 Solo Campaign & TV Ambitions Revealed

We haven't heard much about Titanfall 2 since the shooter sequel was confirmed last May, but now an interview on Forbes with lead writer Jesse Stern says the game will feature a full dedicated single-player campaign and that they are exploring the possibility of a television spin-off based on the game (thanks PCGamesN). Here's word on the game's storyline:
So we are doing our best to deliver a vision of grand global colonial warfare retelling the story of the American Revolution and the American Civil War in space. We imagined the next generation of immigrants moving out to the new frontier of an inhabitable planet. Rather than taking a traditional sci-fi approach to that we wanted to look at how that would happen practically, what the ships would look like and with machines that were designed for excavation and construction , demolition and working the land, and what happens when they are turned into instruments of war.

“What inspires us is the junction of technological advancement with the inevitability of conflict and war and what the next war might look like. In Titanfall 2 there will be a lot of [scenes] where science meets magic, but keeping it grounded and dirty and human and real.”

Sounds like a little game called BATTLETECH

Make the campaign co-op and you might have a near-perfect game!

There was a show?

*checks Google*

Halo: Nightfall is a live-action Xbox Originals webseries for the Xbox One, Xbox 360, and other Microsoft devices which was released in late 2014.

Oh. Yeah. Can't imagine why THAT would of failed...

Well, I enjoyed it, played a fair deal of Titanfall and still go back from time to time... It's holds the sweet spot for me between QuakeIII and CoD.

But as you said there, it's a pain in the ass having 50gb reserved for a occasional game, specially when I'm running a old 320gb Maxtor for games.

TONS of fun. would be crazy with a team, 2 in mechs, 2 pilots wallrunning alongside them down a corridor, I can see that being a good romp.

the MP was fine, needs better AI, and more of it. A game like this could pull off an FPS-MOBA gamemode with it's AI implementation, wouldn't even be that hard to do. MOBA-lite with titanfall's dynamics, please!

This is EA were talking about, they were testing the waters to see how much less game they could get away with for cheap. Multiplayer only games are cheaper on content then single player games with a campaign. They realized that majority of people play games for singleplayer only a subset of games can go multiplayer only and get big.

The same way world of warcraft got real big but many MMO's didn't realize it was a phenomenon unto itself and they were never going to see millions.

I don't buy for a second that Halo Nightfall had a 100 Million dollar budget.

i don't know, defiance is what had the 100 million dollar budget. they were different examples.

I'll say that I'm interested in a single player campaign for this game. That said, I can't help but feel they are adding it because they (executives) didn't understand why it wasn't the success they were hoping it would be. I have no problem with devs dropping single player (or multiplayer for that matter) so they can focus on one aspect of the game. The problem with Titan Fall (imo) is it still felt like the multiplayer that gets tacked on to a single player game.

i agree with this in theory but look at the practice: you've got a developer with experience saying the campaign is 75% of the budget (granted, probably just to justify shitting out the f2p game he's working on), so sure, cut it out of the picture.. but then we end up with relatively empty online experiences like star wars battlefront (or to an extent the original titanfall), and they're still charging 60 dollars for the title and 40 for the "season pass".

A campaign could be very cool, as long as it's meaty and of a good length, and not the usual five hour Call of Duty "watch the cutscenes and occasionally we'll let you hit a button" shit.

Considering the dev, I'm not holding my breath.

I don't buy for a second that Halo Nightfall had a 100 Million dollar budget. Other than the pilot episode nothing after that really needed any massive budget. It was just them walking episode after episode through a scorched rocky terrain. Did 99 Million go to Ridley and 1 Million for the show itself.

Transmedia is an interesting concept but often the show and the game tends to get out of sync. For instance Defiance had to base the show in the ruins of St. Louis and set the game in ruins of California so they hardly ever interacted. Occassionally you saw a game NPC in the show and vice versa but they tended to be minor events that you if you blink you would miss it entirely.

Also fans of one side transmedia project might not care about the other. I didn't really care for the Defiance game but liked the show.

I think the real test of transmedia is going to be Quantum Break.

On one hand... Titanfall and EA.

On the other... TV show with Mechs.

Yeah. I want to be slightly optimistic here because my TV watching needs a higher percentage of Mechs in it and I did enjoy Titanfall's beta, but not enough to justify an online only game purchase.

Yeah, I thought the MW1 & MW2 campaigns were campy fun, like playing an 80s action movie, both done by IW. Even the QTEs were well-integrated, like using the ice picks.

Exactly this. I think the amount of time spent installing, patching, and waiting for the game to load was roughly equal to the amount of time the game was able to hold my attention.

Yes massive hard drives are cheap and you don't need to have this sitting on your SSD to load fast but it's still feel like so much wasted space, compare to something like GTAV that comes in at 64 gb.

A SP campaign is a good first step. And it sounds like they're putting some thought into the background and motivations for the conflict, again good. Now to make the circle complete, they need to add full bot support so that people can continue to play alone or in small groups when all the multiplayer has moved on to the next new and shiny thing.
