DOOM in May

Bethesda Softworks announces a May 13th release date for DOOM, the latest installment in id Software's first-person shooter franchise that launched back in 1993 with the release of, well, DOOM. The DOOM website celebrates the news with a new campaign trailer, and here's word on the game and the chance to spend extra on a premium collector's edition:
Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax® Media company, today announced that DOOM will be available worldwide on Friday, May 13, 2016 for the Xbox One, PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system, and PC. DOOM, the iconic game that defined a genre and considered one of the most influential games ever made, returns as a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooter experience.

DOOM is under development at id Software®, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre and invented multiplayer Deathmatch. Relentless demons, impossibly destructive guns, and fast, fluid movement provide the foundation for intense, first-person combat – whether you’re obliterating demon hordes through the depths of Hell in the single-player campaign, or competing against your friends in numerous multiplayer modes. Expand your gameplay experience using DOOM SnapMap™ game editor to easily create, play, and share your content with the world. DOOM garnered numerous E3 2015 awards and in a recent preview, Game Informer aptly described the gameplay as “an absolute blast.”

Bethesda also revealed plans to release a premium collector’s edition of DOOM that will be available across the globe through participating retailers. The limited DOOM collector’s edition, created in conjunction with TriForce, includes an exclusive, fully-realized 12” tall collector’s statue of one of the game’s most iconic demons: the Revenant. Modelled from actual in-game 3D files and striking in appearance, the demonic Revenant stands on an LED-lit base with internal, slow-spinning turbine from the UAC facility on Mars. The DOOM collector’s edition also includes a copy of the game packaged in an exclusive, battle-worthy metal case.

The DOOM collector’s edition is available for pre-order through participating retailers and is priced at $119.99 (US), €129.99 (Europe), and £99.99 (UK). Players pre-ordering the DOOM collector’s edition or the standard edition of the game will receive the Demon Multiplayer Pack which contains a unique demon armour set with three skin variations, six metallic paint colours and three id® logo patterns that can be applied to weapons and armour, plus a set of six Hack Modules – one-time consumable items that can give you an edge in a multiplayer match.

The slow pace and absence of movement physics gives it a pretty low mechanical skill-cap feel. I'm under the impression that the Arena Shooter community is not their target audience to begin with. Disappointed, but I understand why -- it's a small and shrinking demographic that ceased to be worth marketing to once games went mainstream.

As far as I can see from the multiplayer beta they NEED to push this back and re-think some stuff.

If they release it as it is now the Arena Shooter community will just poop on it.

Not this time...they just released the second closed BETA (yes I get a turn at it this time) and the announced release date is in next Month. Yes, in the past they have pushed back game releases but only when the announced release was almost a year away...they've never failed to deliver when it's just a few months or in this case next month.

I just Checked http://doom.com/en-us/beta and there is another "Closed" BETA.
Starting: Thursday, March 31, 2016 @ 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time (UTC – 5)
End: Sunday, April 3, 2016 @ 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time (UTC – 5)

Again...this is not the "Open" BETA that we are waiting for. It will again be a selection of PC and XBOX 360/XBOX ONE players who
...will receive an email from Bethesda with a key code prior to the start of the Beta.]
and PS3/PS4 Players
...Search for the Closed Beta in the PlayStation Store to download it

However, this one has one important difference:

The Beta is expected to feature two maps, Heatwave and Infernal, and two modes, Team Deathmatch and Warpath, along with never-before-seen weapons, armor sets, taunts and hack modules.

Yes, you may share your gameplay experiences from the DOOM Closed Beta.

I pre-ordered a long time ago on steam so that I will be able to play the BETA which ID said would be available in the Spring...I hope they will take that literally and release the BETA on March 22nd or whenever the 1st day of Spring is.

It is valid to be concerned about the PC controls because everyone at ID develops the game with console controllers...all of their demos are created using console controllers which is why it seems twitchy and mono-directional.

If the BETA has a good feeling then I'll probably spring for the collector's edition. The Revenant would look cool on my desk.

From the video discussions back at E3 they emphasized that the executions are how you get most of your health and ammo. That was done intentionally to keep the combat and the player moving. They repeated that this isn't a hide behind cover and play peekaboo shooter.

This game does look a bit cartoony to me but I'm fine with it. The original doom looked cartoony to me too when it first released and I was a kid back then.
This game will stand a chance so long as they don't have a problem like Arkam Knight.

Most important thing will be the controls. If it doesnt have proper PC controls and instead console controls with delays or senseless key distribution where for example you have to use different buttons even though you only need one, it will be just another shitty converted shooter.
You'd think with ID's background that it would be the reverse.
As to the chainsaw comments. I can't imagine being able to swing a chainsaw into a hunk of bone and meat and not have it get stuck as it chews through.
Old Doom's chainsaw had strategic use if you knew the mechanics behind the game. For example the saw was great against Pinkies and Cacodemons because they had a high chance to react in pain. Meaning that you could keep them locked down most of the time as you drained their life. A few would get a hit on you but most of the time it was a painless and ammoless kill. I wouldn't be surprised if the current ID team was looking to replicate that.
Hopefully their "Snapmap" (i.e. editor) gives you the ability to alter weapon behavior.

Now as to the video. Is that a Hellknight or a Baron of Hell? He has the color of the Baron but all of them in Doom 3 were Hellknights regardless of their color.

I think this game will do great, mainly because there's a shortage of mindless shooters out there. As long as they got the pacing, atmosphere and gameplay right... this game will be loved.

Pretty sure it's kak not cake. Like the word 'cacophany'.

As others said not enough grit and satanic content. It looks like a kindergarten game for infants. But i guess this is the type of games today's generation only remember by.

Level design is going to make or break this game. If it's an on-rails shooter it's gonna suck. If the maps are anything like D1 & D2 it's gonna be pretty cool.
I have a nifty blue line!

Looks like a sequel to Doom 3. Not the original Dooms. All sci-fi normal mapped rounded corner meshes.

Someone said it previously in this thread, but it's missing the grit of doom 1 and 2.

This looks like chunky anime gore. Resin figurines on a hipsters nerds desk come to life. When it should be a stack of ganky VCR tapes of late 80s/early 90s horror films in a fake wood paneled basement, a nasty wrinkled Slayer Divine Intervention poster the only decoration.

Looks like a doom game so far. But it needs less halo, and more satanic shit.

The original doom had a raw grittiness to it, where this looks a little bit to shiny and it's bordering onto halo with gore, but it does come close to a HD 3D doom reboot from what they've shown.
