Try Star Citizen for Free

The Roberts Space Industries website announces the opportunity for everyone to check out progress on Star Citizen during a free fly event for the next week in the space combat game:
On the fence about Star Citizen? Why not give it a try and see what we’re building! For the next week, we’re enable Free Fly access to all accounts… which means that anyone can jump in to Star Citizen Alpha 2.1.2 today! The Free Fly event gives everyone access to three unique parts of the Star Citizen experience:

  • Star Citizen Alpha 2.1.2 – Also known as Crusader or the “mini-PU,” this is the nucleus of the world we’re building! Featuring multiple space stations and environments, scripted missions, places to explore and more, Alpha 2.1.2 is your first look at a much larger universe!
  • Arena Commander – Arena Commander is a ‘game within a game’ that we’ve used to develop our flight mechanics and ship combat balance. Take on human opponents or an AI swarm in single seat fighter.
  • Social Module – Interact with other players while you explore our first landing zone, ArcCorp! The Social Module is intended as a starting point for our world building,

You can register for an account here to get started. If you already have an account from a previous Free Fly, you’re all set! Just log in via the Star Citizen launcher. This is the first Free Fly that includes Crusader, so there’s more to explore than ever before. Free Fly accounts will have access to the Hornet F7C military fighter, the Aurora LN starter and the Mustang Delta interceptor.

My thoughts exactly. So disappointed in E:D.

To be honest anyone who backed elite dangerous should have known that he didn't get anywhere near enough money to make the thing and he was dragging you along if you had any clue how much it costs to make a modern videogame.

To be honest anyone complaining about Elite Dangerous was expecting a totally different game than promised. They pitched a new version of Elite, they delivered 100% minus the offline component.

Just because they don't like it because they thought it would be something different doesn't mean ED/Frontier are to blame. It's like buying Half Life expecting a Super Mario experience then saying Valve dropped the ball because you were hoping for Mario.

ED is just this decades remake of the original, not the BDSSE.

I agree. Back then, it was fresh because no other game was out that produced the graphics, gameplay, and expansiveness. I knew what I was getting into when I backed the Premium Beta package and I'm ok with that. Wasn't thrilled with the "always online" component but my Steam backlog of games is so backed up right now, coupled with kids to take care of that I'm fine if my Internet connection goes out for some time.

That's for the free version. We backers can download the full 35 GB! Not sure what else is included that you aren't getting. Sound like everything is there...

Right, there was a reason why Elite was all that back in its day.

So I downloaded this to be silly... Admittedly, the graphics are pretty sweet... but just some thoughts. I think on a whole, it was a bad idea to release this free fly thing with the state the game seems to be in.

You just seemingly get thrown into a world with no tutorial or explanation. Found a way to get to a ship, launched, and then flew around in space doing nothing for a while. Is there some sort of "instant action" thing we can use to get to dogfighting? Maybe? But the game doesn't really tell you. Again, I got that this is "alpha", but if your confident enough to release, you should at least have some sort of tutorial mechanics in play to direct where to go.

Then I went to explore the hanger, and proceeded to watch the ship there float off to the side and sink into the ground. No worries though, because when I jumped, the ship itself (which I wasn't in) bounced back up on top of the floor too.

Again, got it. "Alpha". But releasing something like this isn't going to get people into the game when it seems like a clusterfuck.

I imagine the last senior management meeting went something like this:

"Oh my God, our Whales are getting bored and not logging in anymore, what are we going to do?"

"I've got it! Free Weekends, to bring in cannon fodder for the whales to face roll and one shot. Should buy us some time until the next set of ship jpegs are ready for sale."

Can you say "We need new bodies to drain dry?"

I knew you could.

You see, they've lost all the people who got tired of the lies, design changes versus kickstarter promises, and the repeated delays. I know that I am extremely happy I got 85% of my money back (Yes, they charged me a restocking fee on a virtual unfinished product when I asked for my refund early on. Although my main gripe was the decision to move from the promised dogfighting in space type flight model to full on physics.)

They've also drained most of the whales to the dregs, you can only spend so much for virtual ships after all. I am positive that they will still have the rabid defenders on their side, though; even if you consider the moves they've made since last year to bring in more money, like extremely expensive new ships and splitting the games (want to bet now that the FPS portion gets split also?).

Depending on how much new cash flow this move brings in, I suspect that we see the repeat of Freelancer by the end of 2016 or start of 2017. Chris sells RSI to a major player, stays on until the bare minimum of promised content is complete, and then ditches making games again for a few years.

They need the money. They're years out from being complete, and burning $2.5M or so per month. It's unsustainable.
