Out of the Blue

Happy birthday to Duke Nukem 3D, as the 2.5D shooter was first released 20 years ago today. My strongest memory of the game was the impact of the demo version being added to DWANGO. At the time DWANGO was all about DOOM, and was so set in its ways 90% of the matches took place on the same map. Duke was so different and fun it actually shook that community out of its doldrums and sparked a lot of Duke 3D multiplayer, which was insanely fun. Good times. Happy birthday Duke. Here are some singles to enjoy at your party at the strip club (and here's a fake ID that says you're 21).

Ah Duke, those were the days...

The satisfying hollow chucka-thoom of the rocket launcher, the insane destructive bullet stream of the chain gun, the glee of a well placed trip wire bomb.

Great one liners and attitude.

For some reason, I always wanted to see a Duke Nukem movie released where Roddy Piper played Duke. His bubble gum quote would then make me giggle inside a little.

Hey Blue, you have an advertisement that makes browsing your site on an iPhone impossible. About 3 seconds after hitting your front page, it pops up a dialogue and then immediately redirects to some shady looking page:

When I browse this site on my android, I get something similar, too, from time to time. I get some window popping up, too, or get automatically transferred to another ad infested site. It's sad but there is no trustworthy online ad partner. Not a single one. They all pull something like this off from time to time.

I emailed Blue about the iphone one a week or two ago.

Ah, Duke3D! I remember playing the Hell out of that game back in the day. At the time, my family had a business that was being run out of our home so we had about a dozen Pentium Pro machines with really nice graphics cards and Sound Blaster cards in them. We also had a 100mb LAN that connected all these machines to a storage server. My dad, whom is still a gaming fanatic, set the server up to also serve as a D3D server and would play with my friends and I for hours on end.

We would play D3D, Doom (1 and 2), Quake, and Terminal Velocity. Those were some really good times.

We had a new Pentium Pro machine at work, so got Duke (and later, Quake) to exercise it.

Used to play online at T.E.N. Total Entertainment Network, which had written an Internet piggyback for the LAN code. I think that's a porn site now. :-/

Beating the final guy was a cheer worthy moment, which I have never felt in any other game, especially since I started the end out of ammo except for the machine gun and didn't know to shoot the blimp.

I also recall seeming endless hours of working your way up the desert mountain to gain access to the alien ship, all the while this eerie warning siren was going off, and it leaving you feeling very forlorn and hopeless. This is what amplified the joy of the final win. Good job, and Game Over!!!!!

My favorite memory of Duke 3D is flying around a level with a jetpack and maybe turning on noclip, and finding a cave high up on a canyon wall. I went in the cave, and on the wall inside were the words 'You are not supposed to be here'.

I think maybe the Levelord designed that level - not sure. But it (and the rest of the game) were just insanely fun.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was his (thought he even signed it?).

As soon as you said "jetpack" I thought of that exact spot.

edit: Yeah, here we go...

Haha! Yep, he did sign it - you're right.

I found a compilation of all the easter eggs in the game. Here's the link:

Wow. I remember sitting outside, reading a preview about Duke in I think PCG. I remember kind of freaking out about it. The author was mentioning pipe bombs, which had me excited, but the thing that really impressed me was that, if you stepped in a puddle of blood, you left bloody footprints for a while.

That was absolutely mind-blowing to me.

Yeah, I can't see Dave going for Gandalf but Elrond or one of the elves for sure. He would have made a really good Saruman now that I thonk about it. After all he was the Goblin King.
