NCSOFT® West’s highly anticipated MMORPG, Blade & Soul, is now available in Europe and North America to play for free. Set in a world inspired by Asian fantasy, Blade & Soul invites players to jump headfirst into the game’s breathtaking personal storyline of vengeance and betrayal, featuring an innovative combat system and rich gameplay experience.

“The launch of Blade & Soul is a significant moment and represents one of the most important online launches for players in 2016”, said John Burns, Senior Vice President at NCSOFT West. “Fans finally have the chance to experience the amazing gameplay, distinctive action and dynamic combat that sets this game apart from others on the market”.

Blade & Soul delivers an engaging story and vibrant world for players to explore as they seek revenge for the death of their slaughtered Master by the wicked Jinsoyun. Featuring martial arts inspired gameplay and mystical movement abilities, such as gliding through the air, dashing on water, and running upon walls, the game’s fast-paced and fluid action-combat system combines perfect timing, defensive skills and combo moves for players to develop their fighting abilities for the ultimate strike.

Blade & Soul is fully localized into English, German and French, and includes seven classes and an up-to-date feature set from the Korean version of the game. Players will initially enjoy a character level cap of 45, more than 30 dungeons, Acts 1-3 of the story setting, and other exciting content like the popular equalized PvP Arena. Two additional epic-level dungeons were introduced to the game upon launch – Blackram Supply Chain and E. Fleet Supply Chain – providing a significant challenge to players and popular rewards. In the months following launch, NCSOFT will release regular content updates and patches to keep fans enticed and hungry for more.

So.....you had a wife and a roomy (who from your story also appears to be female) at the same time. Please tell us more...

It launches at about the same rate as an arthritic snail trying to do a high jump.

What MMO worth the effort of loading up doesn't have at least some means of displaying the population density on a server?

Thanks guys! I met a lot of cool, interesting people while working for NCSoft from the tech support guys (all 5 of them in the States whom were tier 2 but absolute rockstars in how many issues they handled in a week to successful resolutions) all the way up to Executive Producers. I have loads of stories about Guild Wars, CoH/CoV, Exteel, Tabula Rasa, Dungeon Runners...pretty much the entire NCSoft catalog. Unfortunately, a lot of really good people couldn't save the place from atrocious upper management and "rockstar" egos.

As for you, IceWind, I can assure you that I am pretty far from a puritanical person. Skin is fine when it isn't turned in to a fetish for a development group that is far more sexually repressed than any American could even dream of being. I've known nuns whom were more sexually liberal than those guys.

Long-winded from someone on the line within ncsofts' ranks at the time of the destruction of CoH/CoV needs no 'sorry'.

I appreciate the inside line too, thanks Burrito.

We used to call it "Ass and Thighs" internally because all of the videos we were shown had a disturbing tendency to focus on upskirt shots and linger for an uncomfortably long time on the, at the time, ridiculously thick thighs of the female characters. The tit jiggling, too, was nearly a parody of the DOA style as well. Just a really creepy experience all around. The SK overlords got wind of that internal title and weren't exactly pleased.

Here's my take on the game:

01/18: 9pm Central - Started to download the game client.
01/18: 10:30pm Central - Initial download complete. Let the patching begin.
01/18: 11pm Central - Got lucky and logged into a low population server. Created Force Master and started the tutorial.
01/18: 11:45pm Central - Had enough and logged off.
01/19: 6:50pm Central (After I got home from work) Uninstalled game and exercised this NCSoft crap code off my machine.

Thank GOD I didn't sink any money into this game. Pity the fool who paid for one of those founders packs!

'nuff said!

I always wondered at the behind the scenes decision making. It just seemed like free money for them to me. I don't doubt I'd've kept my 3 accounts going to this day assuming tweaks and expansions. My wife and roomy were so fargin' pissed when they shuttered the game. Tears were shed*, tho whether for the game itself or the 'Dress Up Barbie' simulator that was the costume creator, I couldn't say.

* 'tears were shed' The tears were those of two women that had slain masses of humanity, stalking the lands of Britannia as Dreads for well over 8 years. (Yes fellas, some of you on Great Lakes and Lake Superior were actually killed off by real girls and not G.I.R.L's. (guys in real life). MMORPG did 'not' mean Many Men Online Role-Playing Girls to these two slayers. CoH/CoV had us/them for over 6 before it went kaput and to this day I can't watch Big Bang Theory without hearing the gnashing of teeth and wails of bereavement from these two anytime scenes take place in that comic shop with those damn posters hanging up.

I have not seen one decent review on this game. I think NCSoft wasted them time bothering with this. Not something that will do well in the west.

The game feels like if you were to eat McDonalds on $10,000 chinaware. It feels both high quality and low quality at the same time.

Outside of the combat though, the game is typical eastern mmorpg garbage as far as the rest of the gameplay.

Another anime titty simulator with a shitty localization and the absolutely stellar (lol) support of NCSoft. It's a rough time to be an MMO fan. There's just nothing even remotely good on the horizon. It's all a bunch of tiny studio titles that won't happen and Asian imports that are no good.

Plenty of titles with kinda-MMO-ish online modes, but nothing like a true feature rich persistant world.
Do you have a single fact to back that up?

To be fair, it did come out 4 years ago in Korea.

When I worked at NCSoft, this was revealed at a company meeting in 2002 as being "near completion". The original plan was to release version 1.0 in SK and work out the kinks before releasing it in the western market. The problem arose when we were given it to playtest and the Engrish was barely coherent at best. It was just a really, really awkward "game".

To them, this was their next big thing and all the other titles were secondary to it, Lineage, and Aion.

As for CoH/CoV, the most commonly circulated reason internally was that both the backend and client code was really messy. NC wanted to buyout Cryptic wholly but it ended with Cryptic selling the IP to NCsoft. The people who wanted to stay with NC and CoH/CoV formed under the Paragon name. It lingered on for a bit but as I understand it, that group of people lacked the knowhow and imagination to keep CoH/CoV alive and fix its problems. I know that there was talk for a while of relaunching CoH/CoV on a new engine that used DirectX instead of OpenGL so they could basically redo everything from scratch. The cost of that, the declining revenues of NC in the States (due to the writeoffs of Tabula Rasa, Dungeon Runners, etc), plus their 28 million dollar lawsuit loss pretty much gutted NC stateside. The only "local" product that was generating revenue consistently was Guild Wars but I know the lion's share of that went to ArenaNet. So, with declining resources, NC West had to focus on the income they were getting from the SK side and the money they were getting from the sales of GW2. Lotta layoffs and product killings and cancellations.

Sorry if that was long-winded but the situation was pretty complicated.
