Out of the Blue

Happy birthday Ant. Thanks as always for all the fantastic help with interesting links over the years. On a sad front, R.I.P. David Bowie. I don't even know what to say about the passing of such a beloved artist. This is terribly sad news.

OMFG, can you imagine Elvis singing "Golden Years???"

Don't forget singing "Little Drummer Boy" with Bing Crosby on the 1977 TV special "Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas."

I like to think he wouldn't be involved in something like that. I'm relieved to hear it.

I think I heard that David Bowie was in to Nazi paraphernalia, anyone know if there is any truth to that?

I think he played a key role in getting Stevie Ray Vaughan in to a recording studio too.

According to Wikipedia: Bowie was quoted in Stockholm as saying that "Britain could benefit from a Fascist leader", and was detained by customs on the Russian/Polish border for possessing Nazi paraphernalia.

Blue may want to rethink his respect for the man, seeing as, IIRC, he's Jewish.

Bowie has said repeatedly that all of that was part of the persona he was putting on at the time, and was part of provocation. No one has ever had any reports of Bowie in any way supporting of believing any of that. He even denounced fascism a number of times, i.e. see all of Tin Machine.

As for getting Stevie Ray into a studio, that's absolutely true. In fact, if you look through the number of musicians Bowie helped, assisted, poked, prodded, collaborated with and otherwise cajoled into great work, it's pretty ridiculous. Vaughan played on the "Let's Dance" album, along with Nile Rodgers. Four years later with "Never Let Me Down," he had Peter Frampton on lead guitar. The list of people Bowie worked with or wrote songs for is enough to make any musician jealous: Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Freddie Mercury, Mott The Hoople, John Lennon, Brian Eno, Pete Townshend, Trent Reznor, Lenny Kravitz, Philip Glass, Robert Fripp, Jordan Rudess, Massive Attack, TV On The Radio, Goldie, BT, Placebo... the list goes on and on and on. Shit, he offered his song "Golden Years" to Elvis Presley, WHO DECLINED IT.

This? This was the kind of musical legend we will never see again.

Though I'm not Jewish or Gypsy (as far as I know, there are both Jews and Gypsies in Hungary where my mom's side of the family originated.) I know if Hitler knew my politics, I'd be doomed.

And if you read my edit on my last post, David Bowie said that the UK could use a fascist leader, and was stopped at a border for Nazi paraphernalia.

You sure you're not thinking of Lemmy? He collected a lot of war memorabilia.

Bowie did have one incident (I think it was the 70s) where he did a little bit too much of a straight armed salute/wave, and people noticed. But I also firmly believe a lot of what he said in the 70s was made to generate headlines, and not necessarily true (saying he was bisexual, simulating oral sex with Mick Ronsons guitar, etc). He found it was an easy way to keep his name in the press and on peoples tongues.

As I said yesterday, 69 seems way too young in this age of modern medicine. However, I like Simon Pegg's perspective, so I'll add my own: We had David Bowie for 69 fucking years!!! Woohoo!

I still remember like it was yesterday the exact place and time I was when I heard that Stevie Ray Vaughn had died. I was numb for days.

But then I wouldn't be able to enjoy sweet Bowie tunes, duh.

Also what's DangerDog talking about with the chemotherapy comment? Is he one of those Steve Jobs idiots who thinks he can cure cancer by drinking lots of water and taking homeopathic remedies and chemotherapy is just a scam?

Favorite thing I've read today was from Simon Pegg -

If you're sad today, just remember the world is over 4 billion years old and you somehow managed to exist at the same time as David Bowie.

Oh, and Happy Birthday Ant!
