Rocket League Nears $50M

Wall Street Journal reports a new milestone for Rocket League, the runaway hit motorsports game, saying developer Psyonix is claiming the game has now raked in almost $50 million in revenue since launching for PC and PlayStation 4 (thanks MCV). They quote company founder Dave Hagewood on how they managed this:
“We paid the bills by working on some of the biggest games in the industry,” such as EA’s “Mass Effect 3” and Microsoft Corp.’s “Gears of War,” the 40-year-old said.

The few who played “Battle-Cars” loved it, Mr. Hagewood said, “so we saw that as a problem of awareness.”

His strategy for “Rocket League” was to get it into as many hands as possible. So he made it a free download for a month for Sony Corp.’s PlayStation Plus subscribers. Otherwise, it was $20 for nonsubscribers and PC users.

Psyonix also passed along the game to players who stream on YouTube and Twitch, in a bid to build word of mouth.

You guys all played the "snow day" level right?
The different mechanics on the puck are pretty fun.

Very simple concept with amazing execution. Not hard to release new levels either, as they're all just variations of a soccer field. Just need new art assets and no real design changes

These guys did everything right, and at the right time

Those are some seriously impressive sales numbers. I can't imagine this thing cost very much to make either.

I'm bummed you can't do any personalization on the Delorean, but come on....it looks fantastic as-is.

The wheels rotate down and ignite while you're doing an aerial, that really makes up for it in my book.

Edit: Broke the quote

I don't know how you were unaware of Rocket League until so recently, Bucky, but yeah, I think that's how it goes for everyone. I also believe everyone should own this game...I think you'll find that NO ONE on Blue's has anything bad to say about it, which is a goddamn miracle.

I've bought MOST of the DLC, not only because I feel they've earned my money, but because almost every pack was something I wanted. I'm bummed you can't do any personalization on the Delorean, but come on....it looks fantastic as-is.

I'm glad this developer managed to bring in enough to fund at LEAST one big game, if not two or three. Despite being Indie, the game is gorgeous, runs smoothly, and is properly supported post-launch. I have no doubt that small developers are looking at RL as "the way to do it right".

I'm just hoping to see some crazier maps, like SARBC had. The pirate ship one looks amazing!

I stumbled onto this game a couple of weeks ago. I didn't move for six hours after I started playing.

Then I bought all of the DLC (which I never do) just to support them.

If you don't own this yet it should be the first thing you buy during Steam's Winter Sale.

These guys have supported the game and given out free DLC nearly twice a month. They deserve their success for such a polished game and devotion to their customers.
