Musk doesn't say that he doesn't "trust it" in this article anywhere, he merely wants the guy to work for his company rather than buy out his technology so he owns everything new the guy invents along the way. It doesn't matter at all where something is designed, it only matters that it is tested properly before it's sold to the public. Do you think that they wouldn't test a system like this extensively before they start sticking it into cars?

It sounds like this guy is discovering things about programming AI that will be extremely valuable to companies like Google and he's holding out for that. Limiting himself to designing autonomous cars sounds like selling his abilities short and I'm glad he didn't sell out right away.

I believe that someone could make a homebrewed automated driving system that works pretty well. However, I agree with Musk, you won't validate that it works 99.9% of the time. There is a serious risk of injury to myself and others when it comes to driving. It can't just work 99% of the time, with inexplicable behaviour. Similar to flying, I wouldn't get in a plane with an autopilot that was designed in someone's basement.

Yeah, everything he reads must be instantly and permanently stored in his brain.

Extremely smart guy that should be able to make a huge difference in this world if he is so inclined to.

You can be sure that Mobileye, Tesla and Google are watching this youngster.
They really need to put whoever is in charge of AriZona iced tea in control of inflation...
