WoW Banhammer

A Battle.net forum post reveals that Blizzard has once again "taken action" against a "large number" of World of Warcraft players for botting shenanigans in their MMORPG (thanks PC Gamer). Word is they are ramping up punishments for repeat offenders, suggesting bans for such infractions are temporary:
We’ve recently taken action against a large number of World of Warcraft accounts that were found to be using third-party programs that automate gameplay, known as “bots.” As a part of this action, we have removed various currencies and inventory from these accounts including, but not limited to, gold, PvP currencies, and gear. The penalty for those identified as repeat offenders has also been increased.

We’re committed to providing an equal and fair playing field for everyone in World of Warcraft, and will continue to take action against those found in violation of our Terms of Use. Cheating of any form will not be tolerated.

If you believe that you’ve encountered a player abusing a bot, exploit, or cheat, please let us know! You can do so by using the right-click report functionality in the game, and/or by emailing information to hacks@blizzard.com.

I just find this funny from all sides.

On the one hand, what do you expect when you continually make the game less and less social, but keep increasing the grind? Of course people are going to make bots; almost 90% of the game is anything but fun. And now 99% of it is effectively single-player as well (random douchebags you see once in your lifetime as the result of a random queue don't count).

And then on the other hand, with all the public outrage against bots in any online game, what did you think was going to happen to your account if you botted?? LOL.

In the end though, I can't help thinking Blizzard is probably the biggest loser here, which is the funniest thing of all. So glad I bailed on this mess years ago.

For a while there, bots had ruined battlegrounds. Some matches, more than half your team would be bots. That made the game very difficult to enjoy and was one of my reasons for unsubbing back then.

One of the things I enjoyed to no end back in vanilla was either training bots to get smushed by elites or dragging them into the opposing factions cities where they spent hours being corpse ganked, because on respawn the bot's AI would take the shortest path back to their farming location which was usually through a city/outpost/etc..

Tank/healer/damage doesn't really "originate" with MMO gameplay... those are the most basic and logical tactics you can employ. Force your enemy to focus his damage where you can mitigate it best and do most of your damage from a safe distance.

Scripted quest content, instanced group/raid level encounters... those are the "frontiers" of MMO gameplay that WoW actually pushed. WoW stole it's entire feature set from every other MMO in the 90's and merely spit-shined it to a mirror finish. They built the fisher-price of MMO's and that's why it became so popular... ease of access and extremely addictive (insultingly so) game systems.

Gameplay has not evolved from the tank model in well over 20 years. Which would matter if games weren's solo oriented, making bots even easier.

At the rate of banning they are doing, they won't have anyone left playing the game.
