Minecraft Realms Free Trial

Mojang announces a price reduction for Minecraft Realms, saying they are also now serving up a free trial version for anyone who hasn't previously played this version of the game that allows you to run your own Minecraft server. Here's a rundown on the game, the price drop, and the free trial:
I don’t know what Realms is! I am confused
Realms is a safe, simple way to enjoy an online Minecraft world with friends. Realms worlds are always available and only open to people you invite, so you don’t need to worry about mean people blowing up your creations or stealing your resources. Only the host of the world needs to pay, and up to ten players can hang out on a Realm at any one time.

Realms supports loads of exciting mini-games and custom spawns, and the owner of the Realm can switch between them at will. Though we’re excited to bring Minecraft Realms to other editions of Minecraft, it’s currently only available on the PC Java Edition.

You mentioned a trial? A FREE trial?
Anyone who hasn’t previously owned a Realm can now sign up for a 30 day trial via the Realms menu in your client. We don’t even force you to enter your credit card details because we’re nice like that.

Tell me about the lower prices!
I can do that!
A 30 day subscription to Minecraft Realms used to cost £8/€10/$13. Now it’s a mere £6.99/€8.99/$9.99.
90 days of mini-games, cool spawns, and procedurally generated worlds used to cost £21/€26/$35. Now it’ll set you back £18.99/€23.99/$26.99.
180 days of online fun via our 100%-official-online-world-solution-for-dedicated-fans, Minecraft Realms, used to cost £38/€46/$62. Now it’s just £33.99/€42.99/$47.99

Why didn't they just call it Minecraft Servers.

Because anyone can run a Minecraft server.
Minecraft Realms are the easy mode way. Kids were bugging their parents to make them a Minecraft server and parents didn't know how the fuck to do that and didn't want to spend all day reading wikis so they put in a paid easier option.

When you start Minecraft up there are three options: singleplayer, multiplayer (type an IP in), and Realms.

They are going to quickly learn that without credit card details, people are going to just generate a new trial signup every 30 days.
I don't know about that, no one wants to start all over in Minecraft every 30 days.

As opposed to what exactly?

It's just one of those days I guess where marketing goes full retard.

To be fair, there are plenty of "$1 trial, full price if you don't cancel in 30 days." This is a true trial and doesn't automatically bill you once your 30 days are up.

Ah, right, I see. I guess I felt the same way about "Realm". In a way, that term is also generic and could mean anything, hence the article where it has to be explained to people.

But, this is a common problem with most terms.

It's like naming your website or company. You want to use a name with words that everyone recognizes and can all immediately identify with.

Same goes for spelling. "WebWorx" for example. You don't want to be having to spell it out to people every time, or have people miss your website because they typed "webworks.com" instead of "webworx.com" -- BTW, that is just an example, I don't think that website actually exists.

So MS now hopes that kids will pay $100 bucks a year to have a 10 player server in which everything is made for you. My 9 year old laughed hard at that.

Of course, that being said, I'm sure some 35 year old "adult" will happily pay this. Can't have any mean people intruding upon their delicate and fragile play time.

Because that's too technical a term for the target audience and it's a much better name to boot.

It's less generic as well. Minecraft Server is a generic term that could mean anything and requires you to specify a bunch of details. Is it modded? What version is it using? Oh you meant an "official" server? Well, it's not really official as it's only hosted by Mojang not run by them.

Minecraft Realms means a very specific thing so it's dead simple for young children to get their heads around, even if they aren't particularly tech savvy for their age. It's also generally just fucking stupid to adopt generic names for your products and services as it becomes impossible to advertise them without getting lost in the noise of people looking for the generic result.

Minecraft Realms is simple, but it's also immediately identifiable. A good combination.
